The whole 3 year defense doesn't hold water. HCSS has been with the program for 6 years. He was part of the group that rebuilt the team to respectability. However, that goodwill has now been spent. He was given the coaching job to maintain and continue to build the program. That clearly hasn't happen. The program has regressed.
If this was a business decision (and it clearly is), it's a fairly easy call. You need to show growth and progress. Shafer hasn't done that so the choice to separate is easy.
