Recruiting 2021-2023

I would think that the Deere kid from Salisbury would be a major recruit for SU. I believe he is Haudenosaunee and hails from up in Canada. Also the Wambach kid from Rochester, via Salisbury. He's a face off specialist I believe.

Is anyone else surprised athe lack of transfers coming to Cuse for next season? I truly expected to see some high level D
Poles and SSDMs after the gaping holes last season.

Apparently Avilles was hurt most of last season hiding an injury ...he’s not Desrth, but will be an impact player , Beyond that we are far from elite there and I don’t see any big improvement at Close either, and no known quantity in the cage -
How could there be zero activity here after the Gait / Petro announcements ?

I checked in with some of my sources close in and they claim there are no hidden gems on the sidelines or RS in waiting ...

Barring a magical turnaround.. not seeing how things are going to improve here next season ..and the hopeful 2022 class are freshman in 2023 ..so what gives ?

The main problem is that there really weren't much in the way of high end poles and even less SSDM in the portal. There were maybe 2 higher end guys the kid from Nova who went to Maryland and the dude ND got and he isn't considered elite by any stretch. From an SSDM there really wasn't anyone out there period. Zinn from Hop is an option but Aviles Dami and Woody are all probably ahead of him plus the high end frosh SSDM who will be hear in the fall. Getting Clary and the Yale transfer on the field should help things but we could use another pole if one suddenly becomes available

Thanks Jeremy - I wasn’t aware that there so little in the portal..

As far as close, it will be very interesting to see what we do here. Dipp is out , Murphy ? And Horan.

All solid in moments but far from high end.

The only combination I can see is Kennedy. Cocammo (so?) and ? Murphy/Horan?

and then we are back to losing Kennedy in the middle of the field ..which will be serviced by Clary who think is really good but not Kennedy when he is on

SU could still bring in an LSM type as Will Rock is still in the portal and they have a guy like Drago who the previous staff was high on but was hurt by the lack of a true fall and pre-season. Assuming no additional transfers I would expect the close defense to consist of Kennedy, Murphy (if he returns) and then some combo of Caccamo/Hapney/Horan/or a Frosh. One of Hapney Jr, Kole, or Witherspoon could break out.

Clary assuming he is back to full health will likely start at LSM with Page and Drago in the wings and then potentially a frosh as I have heard good things on Rottura but gonna be tough for a true frosh to jump that many guys for PT. Petro may go with some guys that are a surprise to the fan base.

Likely to drop Kennedy down because of need but waste of his open field abilities especially as Gait seeks to get back to transitioning. One thing to drop a good lsm such as Firman but another to drop one with top speed who will be a PLL lsm, opposing coaches know impact so should Cuse , should have went after a Prybinski or similar quality in portal especially if DP return/or timetable is uncertain.Watching goalies such as Kirst, Rode, McElroy and many other goalies outlet to initiate transition then watching us swing ball back and forth between sidelines while Dearth, Kennedy and Aviles were open upfield was disheartening. Longed for Madonna's passing as well as Bomberry passing ball upfield off gb's which DP does fairly well. Offenses cant sink in as deep agaisnt teams that transition and good things tend to happen when defenses are unsettled . Dearth 0 impact was held off by limited outlets , avoid the same mistake . Both Katchurian and Thompson have the ability and willingness to outlet upfield off saves . Screw Rock , if they have to drop Kennedy then go with Clary who will be fine but prefer staff employing the strengths of their personnel . In any case, avoid jockeying any player back and forth . Put them in a position and leave them there . Disliked how Helmer value was diluted by doing so.

There were only real three transfers out there, I think, that are difference makers and they are all gone (Lulley, Khan and Pryblski). I doubt SU had any real chance at them. The guy that makes me wonder "what if" is Owen Murphy from Hopkins, would have four years of eligibility and SU needs more attackmen. Find it interesting that he went to Maryland and former OC Benson. Oh well. There are some SSDMs in the portal, including Harrison Bardwell from Cornell and Parker Alexander from UNC. On the LSM side, there is still Mo Sillah from Towson and Peter Rizzoti from Dartmouth. No idea if any of these guys would consider SU, but there are still names to watch.

I would prefer that SU only bring in guys that can add instant impact, there's not really a need to add more depth as the roster is plenty big. So I'd be more upset if they brought in transfers just for the sake of it. It felt like they did this last year with some of the additions. Plus as new coaches you probably want to show a little faith in the guys you inherit and make them feel wanted, over bringing in new guys just to add new faces.

Not sure what the defense will look like next year. Personally I think the more new faces the better. Pretty frustrating that we are still debating where Kennedy should play. I wish they would have found a number one close defender by now. Easier said than done. It looks like help will arrive in '23, but this year might be rough going. I have a little more faith in the SSDMs than some, I liked the way Olexo looked last year and some guys who probably weren't expecting to play got to see a lot time (Rosa, Woody, Olexo). Hopefully some of these guys improve, and it's been said but have to think Aviles has a bounce back year. There is some cause for optimism here.

Wambach... Rochester... related to Abby I assume

Mo Sillah always impressed me. Played with Epstein at Landon.

Is Max Rosa really a defensive middie or did he just play there out of necessity?

Out of necessity but the move maybe permanent.

I'm guessing the current guys might just be coached up a bit

National Lacrosse Federation Rankings: Jake Spallina

NLF March 2021 Super 60 2023 Rankings

Ranked No. 28 overall, No. 1 FO/SSDM/midfield

⭐⭐⭐⭐️ Rating: 94

Spallina has his older brother Joey’s mean streak, aggressiveness and tenacity, although he’s a completely different player. He’s very good as a faceoff guy who can scrap and turn anything into a ground ball, but it’s his versatility that will appeal to so many college coaches. He gets up and down the field, plays tough, hard-nosed defense and his offensive game continues to improve. He’ll be in high demand because he can make an impact everywhere, a perfect fit as a shot-clock era midfielder.

Other than the two obvious choices for the class of 2023 (McCabe Millon and Owen Murphy) I would love to see Davis Provost, Nate Kabiri, and Jackson Greene all in Orange! I mean, these highlights though...

Millon understands that being the No. 1 player in the class adds an even bigger target than ever on his back, but it’s something that he welcomes. He got to play with NLF No. 1 ’22 Joey Spallina (Mount Sinai, N.Y. / Team 91 LI Smash / Syracuse) at his father’s well-known Project 9 camp, and he took away a ton from his fellow No. 1 player’s mentality toward pressure.

“You deal with shots,” Millon said. “I learned a lot from Joey at Project 9. I got to listen to him speak in front of the camp about that question, and I’m going to steal Joey’s answer. He said, ‘I love having that target and that big bull’s eye. I know I’m getting the best from everyone.'”

I think you mean Owen Duffy. Owen Murphy will be suiting up with the Terps this year.
Yes, that is right. Owen Duffy from St. Anthony’s/Team 91. The names are so close that I get them mixed up lol. Thank you for the correction!

Jackson Greene 2020 Fall Highlights

Thanks for this, it's great to get insight into the '23 class. It seems like there has been very little coverage of this class - maybe the '22 class got an inflated amount given the pandemic, but I thought there would be more stories out there. I guess Xanders has his top board completed but not sure when he plans to release it. Players can start giving verbal commitments September 1st, correct?

A few thoughts on the players illestcuse featured -

Davis Provost, Culver - Looks like a standard lefty attackman, though looks like he can play above the goal in a midfield role. Kind of reminds me of the kid who Woody pointed out a week or so ago. Big shot. Since they would have Hiltz and Ferris his freshman year, and Michael Leo a year above him I wonder how much they'll invest in that position. Getting more kids from Culver would be most welcome though.

Nate Kabiri, Georgetown Prep - Very impressive highlight reel. He looks to be a quarterback style attackman, really nice vision and dodging ability. One of the his goals around the 2:38 mark is really crazy. Syracuse hasn't had many kids from GT Prep. Lipka of course and another LSM whose name I can't remember but transferred to Maryland. That's about it. Wonder how he would fit in with Spallina, but obviously very talented.

Jackson Greene, St. Anthony's - Wow. Kid really looks like he can do it all - dodge, play defense, rides, some footage on the face-off wings, great groundball play, and he can pass. What's exciting is of course he plays for Team 91 Bandits and his coach is Joe Spallina. He also wears #22 for the Bandits. Not the biggest kid but man, I hope this one happens. Syracuse has a real need for offensive midfielders in this class, I hope they are all on in on this one.
