Thinking out loud

Since QB is such a critical position and it’s hard to judge which ones have it and which ones don’t (Burrow had 1 offer!).....

Doesn’t it make sense to bring in a few extra every year and take a chances on guys that appear to be too smalll or too slow and are headed to a lower team or lower division?

The kid gets a chance to compete at the highest level when no one else will give him a shot. If it doesn’t work out he can transfer down anyway. When he transfers, both parties are whole again.

Just makes sense to take more shots at a game changing player.

What am I missing?

Two things. One, we could just successfully recruit good QBs for a start instead of hoping to make chicken salad out of chicken sh^t. Two, Burrow was a 4-star guy who started at OSU. I don't know where you're getting the one offer stuff from.

you are missing that there are scholarship limits. Every extra QB you take beyond what you think you need that’s one less DT, OT, or whatever.
Yeah thought of that.

My opinion is that coaches value 3rd string o line guys more than they value qb #3. They are wrong. They used to be right in the days when you ran 50 times and passed 15, but not any more. The game has evolved.

I’ll take two less lineman, 2 extra QBs, and make up for it by having my 3rd string online guy be my 4 th string d-line guy. He’ll never play any way,

You’re assuming the coaches can tell chicken salad when they see it. They can’t, it’s too much about mental processing. Of course you recruit the best you can find, but take a few flyers on some you wouldn’t normally.

And the broadcaster today said Burrows only offer was OSU and his fathers team Ohio U. Maybe he was wrong, but the data Frozen posted backs it up.

They don't want to come. It's not like a draft.

Maybe, maybe not. There are good qbs in lower level schools, maybe they want to try and play at the highest level. In a lot of cases, they just want a chance.

No matter where you go, you have to compete for a spot, why not bet on yourself?
Some would.

We did essentially that with the Qb from south Florida. He ended up transferring to Vanderbilt and I would say he’s better than Welch and Culpepper.

Do that with 2 guys per year.

Mo Hasan?

He was a walk-on here for a year.

Spent a year at a JUCO.

He played two games for Vandy this season.

you end up after 4 years with up tp 8 extra QBs that dont play and you have screwed up the roster so bad you can never recover.. its not like you can unsign the kids and if they dont help you they have no place to go.
Make them TE’s, WR’s, etc.

Of course you would have to encourage them to move on so that wouldn’t happen. Teams do it all the time. It’s better for the player too. At least they had a chance.

if you are recruiting lesser guys like the thread says then those guys are not becoming WRs/Tes/ most of them cant get to 250 and probably dont have the speed either.

much harder to make people move on with the new scholie rules and why would they move on if its been shown they dont have much talent where are they going to go and play for free?

Kevin Johnson did pretty well at WR

he was an elite athlete.. are we recruiting that kind of run/pass QB now? if you told me we were gonna bring in 2 of those every yr then i am all for it.. or we we bringing in 2 Culpepper/Welch types?

Such a board thing to say. "What about one guy 20 years ago?" It was a different era. Recruiting has changed. We've changed. Etc.

It all comes down to recruiting better talent than we have for the last 20 years.

the goal is to recruit 2 Devitos every year. if we do that they arnt playing any place else.

Huh? Look at Frozen's post again. The guy had dozens of offers. He was the Gatorade Ohio player of the year. He broke all the state yardage records as a HS QB. It's a nice story that the broadcaster told but not a true one. Most good to great QBs are known commodities. We have to do a better job of recruiting them rather than trying to find the needle in the haystack.
