Love this:

That he succeeded on the basketball court — he turned into a four-year starter, the fifth all-time leader in assists and a three-time NCAA Tournament participant — surprised no one. “He listened,” Boeheim says. “He was a very good player who also knew the price to pay to be a very good player. He understood what it meant to work hard.” That he grew up so much off the court surprises him even to this day. “Coach pushed me. He never gave up on me and, this place, it shaped me,’’ he says. “I used to say I wanted to represent my name and my neighborhood. When I got here, it was my name, my neighborhood and Syracuse University. I still feel that way.”

Red is cool as hell as yes he is saying/doing all the right things in terms of style of play and roster construction

Yep. He won the offseason. Roster reconstruction has been impressive.

If he can coach [and in fairness, there's no way to know at this point], he'll be a great hire.

Everyone knows how I feel and felt even leading up to it and think people are seeing now what I have been able to see this whole time. He has a tough schedule this year and there will be some lows here and there, but I think the preparation and how much the kids really like him will show up big time. I can’t wait

Yep, you were right, certainly about things related to recruiting. Very pleased to see how active Red and the staff is out there.

Bulldog, you know where I stood when it came to replacing Boeheim. While I was at saturation point in terms of the program's decline, I felt like we should go outside for an infusion of fresh ideas / new energy.

Thus far, Red has passed all of the early off-season tests. I hope the man can coach, because what he did on the recruiting trail this off-season has been, in a word, impressive. The roster has been completely retooled in a short amount of time.

Really look forward to seeing what he can do. I hope that he can coach -- because that would be a huge success story, for a legendary alum head coach to cede to another alum head coach who can [hopefully] bring us back to the program's former glory. Not suggesting that it will happen overnight, but with the players he's brought in I don't think it is unreasonable to think that we could be top 25 if the talent gels. And of course, if Red can coach. And as a former point guard, there's no reason to think that he doesn't understand the game at a different level, leveraging his experience quarterbacking teams.

This may sound weird but there needs to be lows to learn from. Fully expect some ups and downs in year 1 and in general.

Former Point guard with two other PGs sitting next to him on the bench ( or 3 if Straughn played the position).

I realize it doesn't always work like this - but Hop was a floor burn guy. High intensity and extremely likable. Not an inventive/creative player or a facilitator. In many ways that's who he has been as a coach too and his teams echo that.

I like the chances with having that PG and creative/ leadership mentality on the bench and the odds it lends towards it making a successful and capable staff.

I'll also add that he is much more in touch with today's players than his predecessor, given that he has children of this age -- not to mention, a kid who was a D1 basketball recruit in the class of 2023.

No doubt, there will be a learning curve. Red is a first time HC and will be gaining experience on the fly in the deep end of the pool given the strength of the ACC and the Maui trip. This is not to suggest that he won’t be successful or a quick study. He very well could be. I think he will be. But it’s reasonable to expect that there will be growing pains, especially early in the season.

uhhh...didnt JB just have 2 kids on the team?

I am mostly kidding and I totally understand where you are coming from.

I knew somebody was going to post that. But JB at 80 is a lot different than a guy at 50 who still has a teenager, and can relate to the age group.

But yeah, we're probably on the same page.

Those great teams Rony, Sherm, DC, Billy, Stevie, Ellis Johnson were on.
The reason for all the highlight reels and dunks was athletes, and defense which led to dunks.

“Benny Williams seems to have his swagger back. “Time to prove that I belong,” the one-time top-50 player says. “Benny Williams is here.””

Third person Benny let’s gooooooooooo

Yeah tack that onto the comments from BA after they scrimmage. If we get 5 star Benny and it really clicks for him... that would throw a whole new variable into things. Not counting on it being more than just end of year last year Benny at best but certainly is intriguing.

Just as McLeod impressing was intriguing. Dude is a monster and if working with Griff and being in his third year things come together... very very interesting.

I think that McLeod is going to really surprise some fans. I'm sure that many just look at his stats, and compare that to what we lost in Jesse, and assume that he is a stop-gap, but I don't think that's true. Early reports out of practice indicate that the coaches were pleasantly surprised with how good he is offensively. And let's be real -- he just needs to get putbacks and dunks, catch lobs, run the floor in transition, etc. He's also got good mobility for such a huge kid.

And there will be some games / teams we face where he's not an optimized play. Tough for a behemoth to chase around stretch 5's, or guard guys on the perimeter. In those types of games, we probably see more Maliq Brown, for match up purposes.

But McLeod is no stiff. And he's imposing as hell on defense. And he's not going to get pushed around in the paint. I think he's going to make life really difficult for bulls like Bacot that usually own us in the paint.

Completely agree. Also I think some folks miss realizing why Jesse was such a weapon. While he had some footwork and a good foundation to start with- Griff helped him find how to be effective on both ends and develop into what he became

I think you will see the same with McLeod, especially as he is an upperclassman now. Not that he will be like Jesse but that he will be a much better version of what his skillset and build/athleticism is tailored for.

Good points RF, per usual.

I think one of the options for maximizing what McLeod brings to the defense is to play zone. I look forward to watching these guys play the ball-pressure man defense Red is talking about as our primary D. But IMO, we will still see some zone precisely because McLeod will present as an enforcer and rim protector. What we won't see is the 5 rotating to the corner.

If Red is inclined to play more 2-3 because of McLeod, here's hoping we see him front that with a 2-2-1 3/4 court press. We will have the athletes and quickness to be effective in that scheme.
