Red

Kansas plays 1 freshman (off the bench), Kentucky plays 1 freshman (6 minutes a game off the bench), Duke has a generational talent and is getting way different caliber players than us. They also have two top 40 freshman that don’t see the floor. It’s 2025 the college game is dominated by experienced players. Comparing it to Melo’s team is pointless.
Carmelo snd Jerry were both freshman

I'm a Sadiq fan. But he's not changing this program's trajectory by himself or with Kiyan and the Aussie.

We need to really hit in the portal and Red needs to grow as a coach and probably adjust the assistants (assuming he is getting another year).

I've said it before, but once this season is over and they decide if they want to retain Red, I need to see Kline and Red do a presser where they say the strategy for next year, the guys they are going to get on top of the HS kids to map to that strategy and in no uncertain terms be confident in making the tourney.

The PG and C position alone is abhorrent and if it's even somewhat replicated going into next year, it's a fire-able offense (if not already one for this year).

lol have Klein do a presser? Doesn’t everyone complain that we have no NIL and terrible scouting? Why would we trot out the 30 year old that runs those things

Agreed year three has to be tournament time or i think it will be the end.
My gawd. WHY???? Because THEN we will know it's time to move on? I mean, come on. The damn writing is on the wall. The narrative last year was this season was tournament or bust. We're beyond bust, we blow so badly. It is so apparent that as a program right now, we are low ACC caliber and it's a culmination of poor coaching, talent acquisition, talent assessment, roster construction and management.

Lampkin, Davis, and Carlos all transferred here in April. Taylor transferred here in early June.

Alex Kline wasn't hired until June 29. Majstrovic happened on his watch, but that's about it.

I'd like to see who Kline can bring in after a full season of scouting before we declare him a failure at assessment and acquisition.

22 years ago. As the post that you’re replying to says, it’s a completely different environment now in college hoops. Neither of the freshmen next year are program changers. We don’t have a Cooper Flagg coming in. Benny was a bust. Freeman has played well, but hasn’t moved the trajectory of the team in the right direction. If we don’t have a coaching staff that can put these players in a position to succeed and help the program, we end up looking like we have for the last few years.

It's not surprising that a guy who spent the past couple years being recruited by Autry, and then ultimately chose to play ball for him, is going to support him. It's actually quite admirable (and maybe the people who constantly complain about 'kid's today' should take notice).

I suspect this will be the dominant narrative of why Autry is retained. Big incoming HS class, more NIL money, changes to the staff, etc. we'll see how it goes.
Yup. Prepare to be fed a line of BS from the AD why they retain Red. When in actuality it is just a cover for them being cheap and unwilling to be a P4 athletic program.

No doubt. At least he'll be consistent in that regard.

'Autry has been exposed to every aspect of the sport, and that uniquely prepares him for the job.' “Adrian earned this,” Wildhack said Friday. “Adrian’s not here because he’s an alum, because he played here, because he’s an associate coach here. He’s here because I believe he’s the best candidate to lead this program and sustain the success that coach Boeheim has established over 47 years.”

I still laugh at the best candidate who was up for no other P4 head coaching job in the nation EVER.

I won't call it BS. I think the folks in charge genuinely think Autry is a good coach who can turn things around. I suspect they think 2 seasons is not enough time. And I suspect they believe that a strong incoming HS class, coupled with a renewed NIL pool and portal transfers targeted by the analytics guy will put the program on better footing.

Now I have a hunch that they're wrong. But I don't think they're knowingly feeding us BS.

Yeah, not concerned about Kline yet. He has a solid work history for other teams and experience in what he does. But I'm not confident yet that his hiring moves the needle. There's a lot of experience on this team: 2 juniors, 3 seniors and a 5th year. But they look like they've never played D1 basketball before. That's the coaching aspect that gives me the most concern.

Folks can choose what to call it as they see fit, etc. Fact is, Autry, prior to getting this gig as a "head" coach, had never been one. Therefore, his only track record is what he has displayed in his short tenure to date, and it has been anything but "good" in year 2. If folks in charge are truly being "genuine," it's rather apparent that Red's "Seat On The Bus" isn't one of head or leadership material, at least certainly not at the P4 level.

This team comes out of the gates next year with 2-3 cupcakes and then goes to Vegas for that ILN tourney. Can anyone imagine the uproar when a Red coached team is 2-3 before Thanksgiving?

I believe Red at the helm is a 4-5 point handicap vs. the "average" coach. More against quality coaches (I have no stats to back that up.) The administration is swimming upstream trying to salvage this mess.

In the words of immortal Ween... "...up sh:ts creek with a turd for a paddle."

Here's my thing with Kline. If everyone associated with the hoop program got fired today...he would be the first to be hired somewhere else.

You literally gave the reason in your comment. WE HAVE NO NIL (which is a lie) AND TERRIBLE SCOUTING. But we are also in a deathspin.

Maybe we should put a face as to the solution to this.

Or not. I mean, hey, it's going so swimmingly right now. Why change things up.

Good lord.

I get everyone loves next year's class, but there is no Dylan Harper or Flagg type. And who we have gotten aren't going to solve PG (the aussie will not be our solution stand alone) and center.

Or, I mean, keep having Mike Waters put in the PR script in his mailbag and trot out Matt Park to sound like a fool on a call in show. Either/or, really.

I get there will be years we have sub par talent as well as years we have great talent. But we need a coach that is going to get whoever we have ready for battle.
Just because we don’t have the studs this year doesn’t mean we shouldn’t put up a fight.

That is exactly why I want a new coach. You can’t just expect talent to win it for you every year, cough Calipari cough. You need a strategy. You need a philosophy. You need actual plays. You need an edge.

Red has shown he has no coaching
acumen. He isn’t getting the guys we have to play as hard as they can every play. So why should we expect the talented guys to play any different.

Oh Red won 20 games last season. Well our talent won 20 games last season. Judah Mintz was one of the best guards in ACC. Maliq Brown one of the best defenders in ACC. Bell could actually hit shots. But still didn’t make the tournament.
