Red's gotta learn when Kiyan is cooking

Just put this in the postgame thread too:

JJ has a TS of 47%. Kiyan is 51.8%.

JJ has a PER of 10.8. Kiyan is 14.3.

JJ has a TO% of 12.1%. Kiyan’s is 12.5%.

JJ’s WS/40 is .091. Kiyan’s is .107.

JJ has started 95 career games. Kiyan has started 2.

By all metrics, JJ isn’t even an average player.

Put JJ on the bench.

I agree and am a bit shocked Kiyan is sitting as much as he is. Wonder how that is sitting with the family.

Red should ride who is playing better. Last night it was Kiyan, though he has had games where I have said "get him out" too.

Kiyan has a long way to go, so i dont know that his family would be mad about 21 mpg. He’s still a freshman. Next year is when I would think they start thinking about more minutes.

Both our SGs are streaky and their minutes need to be managed based on what they’re doing at the time. That would go a long way. And if neither has it going, Kingz at the 2.
Outside of Tennessee JJ hasn’t produced against power conference teams in forever. Kiyan needed more minutes the last two games. It probably cost us against Clemson. We haven’t seen efficiency numbers like this from the starting 2 guard since Louie McCroskey was on the team.

THIS.

And - IF Kingz is at the 2, we can have Betsey at the 3,
which then gives us much better total team defense, AND more 3pt shooting.

And yet - have we ever even seen that lineup out on the court?

NO.

Because Red Man Walking is mentally locked in to having JJ get 30+ minutes a game.

It's hard to have Nait and Kiyan in together - they both are good but they both are weak - and get blown by - and can have the ball taken from them too easily - Kiyan just needs to get some size and he is going to be excellent

I think there are times when Kyle, Freeman, Betsey, Kingz and George is our best lineup. Especially when the extra mass of Betsey will be useful. We don't have to play 3 guards just because that is how our lineup seemed to come together in the offseason.

The question isn't binary; Starling or Anthony? The question is who should be out there from the entire team to give us the best chance to win. Betsey is a much better rebounder than either Starling or Anthony, shoots about as well, turns it over half as often, and has much lower usage (a plus for a guy who should be the 4th option) on offense.

George has been a solid defender. The best of those 3. The other two are basically a wash at this point.

Unfortunately Red has shown literally 0 ability to watch what is happening in the game and make real time adjustments.

I think you mean JJ and Kiyan, right? Nait is a much better defender than JJ. And despite some evidence to the contrary, he is a better ball handler than JJ also.

What is our record if Dan Hurely was coaching this team... fun thought experiment
Could be as good as only 1 loss (Iowa State). Possibly 2 (Kansas but they were very beatable in that game). We’d be ranked for sure.

I’ve seen enough of JJ to agree he needs to be closer to 15-20mpg, not 30. It’s pretty clear he’s a streaky scorer/shooter at his best and a detriment to the team at his worst. He’s not a good enough scorer to do just that and he doesn’t do enough other things well.

All of that said, it is difficult for any coach to pull the rug out from under an upperclassmen. It needs to be done, but even the legends of the sport had trouble doing that to older guys who needed to get out of the way. It’s not a video game; managing personalities and emotions is a very real part of the sport.

This might lead people to say stuff like “well, JJ needs to be mentally tough and do what’s right for the team and yada yada yada.” All I’ll say to that is that’s pie in the sky fantasy stuff and rare. It has little to do with mental toughness or being a good teammate.

Nailed it.

Honestly, there are games where Starling shouldn’t get 15 minutes, let alone 30. Last night being a perfect example.

JAB once stapled junior Allen Griffin to the bench after he had been a 27+ minute/game guy as a sophomore. Then he returned him to those minutes as a senior.

Good coaches do what’s necessary. Hell, at the high school level my kid’s lacrosse coach did that.

Red’s obligation is to the team, not Starling.
