Red's Postgame Presser | Cornell

So from watching that I have a couple of takeaways.

The first 2-3 minutes was a non stop shot at Chris bell without using his name.
I like the reference at the end that they’ve talked to Donnie about playing inside more.

I have no issues with what Red said other than his defense of Carlos. He said Carlos isn’t a scorer and guys aren’t making shots or helping out on defense when JC is in there. Which is making him look less effective. Seems to me he’s reversed the cause and effect in that situation.

yeah, if he was just sticking up for a kid not to throw him under a bus, okay. If he understands that he has to make a change. But if was being honest to what he really thinks, we gots problems.

I thought the same things about his comments about not worrying about scoring…that was solely directed at Bell. I thought he handled that perfectly, as well as keeping Bell on the bench for the last stretch of the game. Red needs to keep that same approach with Bell because he hurts the team when he’s not scoring and instead sulking. I love that Red is the anti JB in that he doesn’t throw his players under the bus during press conferences, but there is nothing wrong with acknowledging that Carlos is struggling instead of placing the blame on other guys. Seems like a stubborn move that I don’t understand.

red just cant admit that he made a mistake bringing carlos in...and it does him no favors to cut bait...because red is on the line too for how carlos plays

carlos does NOTHING for the team...he cant drive...cant beat anyone off the dribble...cant shoot...cant guard anyone taller than 5'11...he literally cant even foul in transition d because hes too small to even do that

its like team is using a walkon as starting PG,,,and red feels responsible...so he wont just admit it...bc he thinks it will reflect poorly on him...it will, but not as orly as sticking wth JC

and the emperors clothes comes to mind...

Besides Brown, the rest are doing nothing and are playing at schools we’ll never hear from them again. If Bell doesn’t want to suck it up and get coached hard, just leave now and spare the coaching staff of being psychologists to keep his head on straight. He did nothing tonight that garnered any playing time. He deserved to sit. He can whine about it or do something to change the way he’s playing.

i agrée. hé keeps saying we didn’t bring him in to score 18,16,14, and with him in it allows jj to be jj. well jj has played best when JC isn’t in, and the team has honestly played best when JC is not in the game. i don’t expect red or any coach to throw someone under the bus so it’s a “cope” type of response. still … JC numbers are horrendously bad. if you are a guard and can’t 1.) shoot & catch 2.) split and/or drive/ shoot a 3 off a P&R you are COMPLETELY ineffective. every team can simply go under on him or step out and push him back to back court. either way it works for their favor. i would go under on every screen with him and let him make a play if i was the other team.

So it might wind up being another one of those kind of seasons...:(

So much for him not being a malcontent with Judah, Benny and Q gone. I’d seriously consider starting Taylor at the 3 going forward. You won’t get the shooting, but he’s an upgrade on everything else.

That's a bit of a harsh take. We're not seeing Chris do anything toxic; he had a bad game (maybe a skid), got benched, and is upset about it. He looked dejected as he went through the handshake line, I legit felt sorry for him.

That's not an abnormal reaction, nor is it a good headspace to play any sport at your best. And that sort of sport psychology absolutely falls under coaching IMHO. Like when Fran was consoling Kyle after all the interceptions at Pitt--lots of people didn't like that, yet, Kyle bounced right back the next game.
