Whether you’re 100% Team Fran, or support Fran with a bunch of concerns…

Last night was a travesty.

Did we have major obstacles once Angeli went down? Of course, but it shouldn’t have meant that the staff was suddenly fresh out of ideas.

Before the game, I thought “starting a walk-on freshman lacrosse player under center sounds like the craziest idea in the world but the staff must know something we don’t”

No. No, they didn’t. Boston FreakinCollege must be licking their chops in anticipation of their game against us

I normally try not to get too sarcastic with the coaches, and I still have confidence….fading fast, but still a little…for next year IF Steve comes back in good shape and the rest of the talent doesn’t jump overboard.

Still, I feel like the staff meetings last week were like this old Far Side cartoon.

I don’t think it is even a case of recruiting per se. I posted last week that our QB room was a house of cards. When Angeli went out the whole house of cards collapsed.

Rather than recruiting, I think it was poor QB room design by Fran, the GM, and the staff. Also, poor talent evaluation.

One star player, one player whom the powers that be wildly evaluated incorrectly, and a bunch of young guys who aren’t ready.

Fran has done a lot of positives but his handling of the qb situation is absolute travesty. It seems he’s more interested in saying he’s right with Ricky than doing the right thing for the S. He says nothing is more important than the S but those appear to be just words to him. If he really believed those words he would not have played a walkon, continue to protect his coordinators and coaches when they have failed in real game planning or accountability. He preaches DART to his players but he clearly does not demand the same for the staff or himself. I don’t expect him to criticize his staff publicly but he clearly does not feel: “nothing is more important than the S”, when he continues to provide the fans the product we saw last night.

As Lloyd Christmas would say "I got robbed by a sweet old lady on a motorized cart. I didn't even see it coming"

Seriously people. Fran was a 40 year old Defensive Backs Coach 2 years ago. Did we all think we had hired a QB coach and an Offensive Coordinator or a dude with 20 years Head Coach experience on his resume? Don't think so, so why are people so shocked.

And for all the people crying about just the QB and how these poor kids were set up to fail with Filardi. Explain to me how 5 OL cannot block 4 bad DL from UNC for more than 1 second or why our Defense cannot make basic open field tackles against a garbage UNC offense. That ain't on the QB, its on the staff yes but not all on the QB. Whole team gave up.

It's all on Fran he either fixes it or doesn't this offseason.

In my opinion, we need to focus on recruiting 4-star quarterbacks out of high school. Fran has a great track record of bringing in top talent, but we need elite QB prospects and should stop settling for lower-ranked players. To build a strong quarterback room for the next cycle, I expect us to secure a 4-star QB in 2027. Moving forward, we should aim to bring in elite QBs every one to two years to maintain a high-level pipeline.

You act like every coach in the last 5 decades hasn’t tried to bring elite qb recruits here. It’s just not that easy.

It doesn’t matter how easy it is. It just needs to happen if you don’t want another season like this with quarterback play.

And how exactly do you propose we just make it happen?
Recruit them. Pony up the money. Give the kids a clear plan for their path to the NFL. Being in a pass-heavy scheme is very attractive, especially with the elite WRs we always bring in. So tell me — how can we not make it happen?

How much of this is on the staff once Angeli went down is up for debate. Certainly they get the blame for the QB room entering this year. I just think many programs facing the hurdle of having no functional QB/no offense would inevitably unravel. See FSU last year. Clemson/PSU this year. Every unit looks worse because they are giving up.

Because other schools pony up more money, have better lines to protect them, more expose at larger factory type schools, fan bases that show up on a Friday night even when the team struggles a bit. Those sort of things. I’m not saying we shouldn’t try, but we have tried. The only coach who didn’t recruit those types was Shafer I believe because he was making his team of team captains or whatever. And for that matter I’d find it hard to believe he didn’t try, just not sure it was a priority for him.

We need to wisely use the portal for a QB that fits our system!

The problem with the portal is that it takes a concentrated effort to get a new player acclimated to the playbook and to new teammates and leaves little time to develop backups. If the backups are also transfers or worse, freshmen, that puts us in our current situation. It’s also a hard situation to fix.

Need to start getting elite prospects out of high school as well
We don’t even need an elite guy to be the #2.

We merely need a carbon-based life form capable of being sufficient. We don’t have that this year.

We have a number of guys on both sides of the ball who are not stars but who are “good enough”

But not at QB

and always keep in mind . the more games you lose. the tougher the recruiting becomes . fact.
try sitting down with any 4 stars parents (or uncles) and explaining to them "we ain't gonna win much , or get on TV , but your boy's gonna become a better person" . try selling that and a bar of soap.

I think a lot of it is coaching as well. Even I have a few plays that I could have used to get my mother, in her mid-60s, at least a few completions and develop a rhythm if she was under center. Instead, it was a run up the middle or a pass for 10+ yards down the field. No rhythm, no flow, no nothin.

GRob-esque, and I struggle to think of even one of those games that was worse.

Our football team is a mess, every major artery in and around Syracuse is under construction, and I am in month three of Lowe's butchering the tile install at my house. I'm ornery.

I think in the last 25+ years of the program I can think of 3 seasons where we had a legit backup capable of consistently winning games. Nassib behind Paulus in 2009. DeVito behind Dungey in 2018. And you could make an argument for Nunes. That was about it.

I gave Dino a ton of criticism for QB depth during his tenure (warranted). Can’t give Fran a pass here - you can’t go into seasons at the P4 level with 1 guy on the roster at the most important position on the roster capable of winning games. You just can’t. It’s been a recipe for disaster for us during every tenure we’ve had.

Now that being said, had Nassib gone down during 2010-2012 we’d have been having the same conversation about Marrone. He built a very strong OL and had the luck of not having a significant injury hit his #1. But there wasn’t really anything behind Nassib for most of his time, I guess Hunt was a freshman when he was a senior so maybe he could have kept the wheels on as a true frosh but who knows.

I don’t care about a backup quarterback we need an elite guy to be the quarterback in general you missed the point.

I believe that HCFB is attempting to to develop a team through recruiting High School talent, that takes time…
