Regardless how you feel about Fran

How were we not able to recruit a quality QB after the season McCord had?

I was told Fran the elite recruiter tried to secure the services of 4 or 5 other portal QBs before he settled on Collins. Why wasn’t he able to land one his first 4 or 5 choices for QB? Do we not have enough money to spend? Was Fran not willing to spend the money needed to land his top choices?

We have what we have.

People owe Pena an apology. He knew.
I got the impression that the flirting with McCord coming back may have hurt the timing of bringing on a top flight portal QB during the early portal recruiting phase but I could be wrong.

Thanks.

So do we not have the money needed to pay the going rate for a top QB or do we have the money, but have decided to use it on other positions?
We don’t have the same budget. Duke spent 4m for its portal QB. it’s the most in demand position besides the linemen. If you’re going to heavily rely on the portal, you have to ensure you have a top budget. i think we did very well on a guy like Angeli but injuries happen. We will have to pay more to keep him now. That’s a battle I’d rather have because we’re paying for a known quantity who has already done well for us.

But for every Angeli there is also a Collins and many others. Not every top guy works out in every system. I’d also argue Nixon’s offense requires a higher level qb to be really successful.

It’s so easy. Why didn’t anyone else think of this brilliant plan.

I mean, all these coaches at Florida and LSU and Penn State and Virginia Tech who got canned this season totally should have followed this fool proof plan.

What dummies.

What plan? They all got elite quarterbacks on their team except virginia tech so everything your just said was stupid.

But but but if they have elite QBs then why weren’t they good?! That’s all it takes. Just money and an elite QB.

Who said the quarterbacks weren’t good? They’re all better than Rickie Collins and the rest of the QB room, so try again. And I never said having a good QB fixes everything — but for a team trying to take the next step, it definitely matters. Also, I never brought up those other teams — that was you. The point you’re trying to make doesn’t even apply here. Nobody said having an elite quarterback automatically makes your team good.

you purposely misread what I wrote and turned it into “just get elite quarterbacks and everything’s fixed.” I never said that. Don’t put words in my mouth, if you want to have a conversation be a adult and have one.

Thanks.

We certainly don’t have the money for the top portal QB’s. Guys like Mensah Beck, Dante Moore, and Mendoza have NIL deals around $3m - $4m per year. Nussmeier was around the same to stay at LSU. That’s not counting top HS recruits like Underwood, Lagaway and Arch who reportedly were around $10M. Guys like Raiola, Sayin, Miller Moss, and i’m sure a ton more are around $1.3 - $2.5M.

I would assume we have been in that range if we kept McCord, but we can’t compete with the upper echelon.

Unfortunately, it’s the most secure way to get guaranteed, or as close as it gets, success. Since 2010 Syracuse has recruited 2 HS QB’s that have been above average, Nassib and Dungey. Even then, only there senior seasons were really outstanding. 2 for how many ever Qb recruits is almost like playing a scratch off ticket. Unless they’re able to recruit high level QB’s, which we’ve shown we have not been able to. I would call both Fran’s current QB’s reaches. Very rarely do highly successful college QB’s come out of no where and those are those lotto tickets. The prototypical Qb’s with size, arm talent, or dual threat, are easy to identify, I would say more than any other position.

Going the HS route with the guys we’ve got so far and have signed is the continuation of what we’ve been doing extremely poorly.

Recruit them. Pony up the money. Give the kids a clear plan for their path to the NFL. Being in a pass-heavy scheme is very attractive, especially with the elite WRs we always bring in. So tell me — how can we not make it happen?
Yes but how many elite WRs are going to keep coming here if we keep putting up 39 passing yards a game? No one is home saying let me get some of that action lol

Do players really have a path to the NFL with this staff? Who’s excelling at coaching? Which players are better now than when they stepped on campus?

An exceptional QB can make mediocre players serviceable (or better). It’s really hard for exceptional WR’s to make what we saw out of Filardi on Friday better. If it’s me, I err on the side of over investing at QB and OL. Yeah, you’ll have holes elsewhere, but if you have a hole at QB you’re doomed.

There are 7 guys from last year's team in the League. If that's not SU's most ever, it's gotta be close. One of our skill position guys has made an instant impact. DART!

Next year... Jack has a great shot to make the league. Dan could stick too. Other guys will get looks.

If they’re really that good, so will the other schools
do you pay attention to overall recruiting in college football ? Because I do and I have seen top 4 star and even five star quarterbacks wait their turn to start.

The ace recruiter didn’t have another qb. This is starting Casey Powell in 1996. Why we giving this guy a pass? Fraudulent allowing a non competitive product to occur vs belichicks atrocious team
Its more like getting Joel White, but I get your point.

Actually would be interesting to see what either could have done with the weapons McNabb had.

We don’t even need an elite guy to be the #2.

We merely need a carbon-based life form capable of being sufficient. We don’t have that this year.

We have a number of guys on both sides of the ball who are not stars but who are “good enough”

But not at QB

I think more people should think about the ecosystem around the QBs. Who is coaching them? What are they being taught? Who is blocking for them? Who is teaching them? What kinds of dudes are they recruiting? Who is calling the plays? Do those plays work for the individuals executing them?

I personally feel like more energy should be expended on that.

That’s why I said we need to bring in elite quarterbacks to Syracuse — so we can build a pipeline of guys ready to compete right away, not just rely on undersized 3-star prospects. Also, you’re going off-topic — I never mentioned anything about coaching development or players getting better on campus. The point is, this staff has already sent 11 players to the NFL, so the talent development is clearly there.

Well then, be prepared to pony up. 5-stars ain't coming to Syracuse to sit. Alabama, maybe. But not Syracuse.

I hate to say it, but that's what it is.

We had an elite guy. He got hurt. Not caring about the backup gets you right where we are now.

And the backup situation is a carry over from Dino but it’s Fran’s baby now.
Disagree. They thought they had their guy (Collins), as did we all. They had developmental guys. They skipped over the incumbent, (Jakari) as he obviously doesn’t have what it takes. When they realized he wasn’t it, they got Angelli. He got hurt. There isn’t a waiver wire or trade option where they can go get a seasoned vet. It bad luck, but not for lack of effort or recognition of issues.

A great QB hides a lot of shortfalls. That’s why i’m serious about recruiting 2-3 HS Qb’s per class, 2 if one happens to be an elite prospect, and then another 1-2 in portal and let it shake itself out. Carry 7-8 Qb’s and hope you hit on 1 and another if he goes down. All these kids are confident and think they’ll win the job. These are 1 year deals.

Your plan is so brilliant, detailed, well thought out, and executable - Syracuse should hire you to help with recruiting. I have absolutely no doubt that things would immediately improve.

I’m 19 they would not hire me😂
