Every thread devolves into placing some blame elsewhere. The only question that really matters is Autry a good coach or even a mediocre coach? If your answer is yes then please share the things you believe he does well.
For transparency, I think he is not a good coach and is in the bottom tier of coaches we see patrolling the major conference sidelines. His best quality appears to be recruiting at the high school level. However, if we view that as a strength then his coaching and developmental ability would be deemed as a negative as the talent does not translate into results.
Frustrated with another wasted season but Go Cuse!
Is he a good head coach? Maybe in some scenario, but at this time and for this program, he is not.
I know there were extenuating circumstances when he was chosen to be HC and that's just the way the cookie crumbles. I know it was messy, we had been entrenched in mediocrity for a while and excitement around the program had waned.
I also get that being the HC at Syracuse comes with a lot of responsibility and following a guy who has the court named after him, is in the HoF and has a title is never easy.
And he should be commended for the defensive improvement, the quality of players we have and getting that win over Tennessee and the fight we put up against Houston this year. No doubt.
But results matter. Especially in year three. We are dead last in FT% out of 365 teams. We are in the 300s in 3PT%. We are 75th in KenPom and 92nd in Net.
We are 6-4 with a loss to Hofstra at home where we were like 11 point favorites. We had trouble with Monmouth who is 233rd in KP and 225 in Net. We had trouble with St Joes who is not a good team. The latter two I could understand because teams trip up early in the season but still win a game that is tough that shouldn't be on paper. It happens. But it's looking more indicative of where we are as a team.
I'm looking at our schedule and you start looking at the teams that we play and their HCs. How many of those teams would trade their HC for Red?
So right now, I do not think Red is a good coach. At least not for us in this current situation. And it's too bad, because having an alum who was on JB's staff would be a wonderful story to have.
And, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Donnie comes back and we win like 15 ACC games and I'll have to eat crow. But wouldn't bet on it.
