And the officiating was the biggest thing that screwed up UVa. I think you can split the game into three distinct sections:

The first half, we were getting to the basket but we were getting hacked almost at-will. Perrantes had a few shots out of his mind, but overall, the UVa offense only scored 35 points. The difference was the officiating and finishing/calls at the rim.

The first 10 minutes of the second half were called starkly different. Three fouls were called on UVa within the first 2 minutes coming out of the locker room. These were non-shooting fouls so the game was played at a stalemate score wise during this time.

Syracuse hit the bonus with just under 9 minutes left, when we started our run. As UVa started getting into foul trouble, and we were now in the bonus, and you can see them backing away on our drives and not contesting/hacking as they were in the first half. Outside of the threes hit by Mal and Tyler, I believe every other point came from a layup or foul shot.

Obviously the press creating turnovers gave us more possessions, and UVa's ineptness on offense helped, but as far as the offense we put up to outscore them 29-8 down the stretch, but I'm of the opinion that the lack of calls is what enabled them to create the lead, and they were caught off guard and unprepared to correct when those plays started getting called.

Very interesting! My goal is to watch the entire second half again, but so far I've only done the last couple minutes. I keep getting distracted! I will pay attention to your observation.

There were a couple no calls in our favor too during that run. I didn't do any kind of scientific study, but Coleman could have been called for one or two. Roberson's 5th was probably the cheapest foul out of anybody in a critical tourney game since John Wallace, MCW, Triche, and Dion Waiters though.

I thought the same thing. In the first half the Virginia defenders had impunity on using the Louisville 'secretariat' trick of riding/bodying our players when they drove to the basket. We started getting calls in the second half and that changed how aggressive they were in defending our perimeter players. Couple that with JB moving away from a pick-and-roll oriented offense (that bottling everything up) to a spread offense and our offensive production opened up.

So UVA saw what Pitt sees in the Tourney? That they can't just push, grab and inhibit ball handlers non-stop without getting called for fouls?

The refs were so awful in the 1st half, that just being bad in the 2nd was all it took to make a difference. The fouls they finally started calling really did help us in the 2nd, as the clock stopped and we shot FT's in the bonus pretty early on.

This is something that has long been a theory of mine and many others since Howland first started the clutch and grab @ Pitt. There shouldn't really be any such thing as a "PHYSICAL" style of defense. Think about that for a little bit . . . . . . . . right that's pretty much fouling by constantly impeding the offensive player using physical pressure. In regular season and especially conference play most of these fouls have not been called for many years. They are trying to clean it up however. I think Bennett's system is no where near what Howland's, Dixon's, Buzz and RickyP's were in the hay day but it is still predicated on using physical pressure to impede once the offensive player gains an advantage. Buttler was perhaps the worst because being a midmajor they still weren't called for this in the NCAAT and found great success because of that advantage.

I thought there were many no-calls, for both sides, throughout the game. If they called more, we probably lose. Officiating is probably the biggest problem in the game - just think of the Wisc-Duke NC game last year.

How are you watching replays of the games? I still haven't watched the 2 opening games in this tournament. I was working for the Dayton game and the MTSU game I was eating dinner at the buffett in the casino for my birthday.

What types of food did you eat?

DVR'd the CBS Sports Network replay at 2am the night of the game.

Getting to the bonus early was a large factor. However, much credit needs to go to our players. Even after getting few whistles in the first half, they continued to take the ball to the rim. And they converted the resulting foul shots at an 80% rate.

I'm up to three times watching the Virginia game and noting the number of times and at what point saying to myself. "Its Over"and not about the oppositionEven watching the replay and knowing the outcome its amazing to me that we came out on top. It really was a game for the ages and no not the "aged"Even card carrying geezers can appreciate great thrillers in the big tournament.

When we get beat, the refs screwed us. When we win, they screwed the other team ...

It's on this NCAA website. You just have to advance the arrow until you come to the Cuse vs Virginia game. It's 2 hrs and 45 minutes.

Richardson totally traveled on his 3 to cut it to 58-52. He's gotten called on that a lot this year, glad they missed that one!

Refs get all the action.

ok once . twice. three times maybe. 4 times is getting a bit zapruder.

It's not that they screwed Virginia, it's that Virginia hacks and pushes and when it was finally getting called, they didn't know what to do.

I watched that first half. Virginia wasn't doing a lot of hacking and pushing. We were driving wrecklessly too the basket and tossing up prayers. That is what our offense consisted of of we weren't turning it over off of lazy passes. Virginia pack defense was doing well what it always did well against us. The only really bad call I saw in the first half was the charge on Gbinijie that got called a block.

I think they impede and body bump more than hack but the point is solid. Their fans are obviously used to this being called tough defense and them getting away with it when in actuality they are constantly fouling when the offensive player gains an advantage.

I thought the officiating was pretty good in that game, although it's not easy to tell by watching on TV. You can't win on playing good defense if the refs call touch fouls. Just IMHO.
