My step-sis-in-law/cousin - I don't know how the hell she's related to me - texted me very fretfully about death penalties. I tried to reassure her about that as well.

Interesting. But be careful what precedent you set. IMHO, LV was a sketchy conference choice to begin with given their academics. At this point, however, they're members of the league and will undoubtedly suffer serious NCAA penalties. Maybe the conference should just leave this to NCAA enforcement, unless they want people looking to ax UNC when the NCAA shoe drops on them. It's a slippery slope.

will never happen because there's always the chance something gets linked back to Duke or Carolina. don't establish a precedent you can't live up to.

maybe a better punishment would be to make them play all conference games on the road for 3 years. i imagine that would have a severe financial impact while also benefiting other member schools.

Yeah, no way. The legal fees alone could bankrupt the conference (a bit of hyperbole there, but they would be astronomical). And as Franco says, it would set a dangerous precedent. Sanction them all you want - that works and they would be hard-pressed to argue. But you can't just kick them out of the conference. This ain't Temple.

Rick Pitino could be in some serious trouble.

After the FBI announced its investigation into an NCAA corruption scheme earlier this week, the Louisville head coach was identified as "Coach 2" in federal court documents that claim he played a role in sending illegal payments to the family of a highly-touted recruit, CBS News' Dana Jacobson reports.

Prosecutors allege Adidas executives funneled $100,000 to the family of a top recruit - believed to be five-star freshman Brian Bowen - to ensure he'd play basketball at Louisville, an Adidas-sponsored school. Louisville reportedly suspended Bowen this week.

Pitino was placed on unpaid administrative leave Wednesday along with athletic director Tom Jurich, but has denied any wrongdoing.

The Hall of Fame coach was already due to serve a five-game suspension this season stemming from his role in the program's escort scandal.

Surprised by this. I would think the best thing for them to do would be to clean house. I heard someone say it would be good for the team to maintain continuity. At this point, why would you want any ties to a largely corrupt past? The sooner that all of the coaches and players that were there in 2017 are gone, the better. Obviously you don't kick the kids to the curb but the coaches that drove the ship- see ya.

Zero commitment to a change in culture. I hope this doesn't exemplify the rest of the landscape post FBI.
