Rickie Collins

CDRW did nothing for his career unfortunately despite being a highly touted SEC transfer

If Rickie is the guy let's go and hope he's more on the McCord side than the CDRW one

I’d ‘settle’ for Rickie being more on the Schrader side, sans the injuries.

Shredder did a pretty damn good job for us, all things considered.

Rickie has a better OC and OL, and likely more and better skill players than GS had to work with.

If he’s Shrader without the injuries I’d take that all day long. When healthy, Shrader was a competent college QB and extreme competitor who could win games.

Hmmm… didn’t Shrader lead the program to back to back bowl games for the first time in more than 20 years?

I have nothing but appreciation for Garrett Shrader.
That's totally fair.

He has a weird legacy.

He helped stabilize full season performances resulting in bowl appearances, even though in season due to injuries he was a mixed bag and missed games.

Healthy Shrader could pass just well enough at this level to give us a chance to compete against tough teams. Gimpy Shrader on the other hand... made for some difficult outings.

Agreed. I get the love for Shrader. Tough kid, played his heart out, etc.

But as a QB, he was 80% legs, 20% arm. I would be disappointed if we settle for his level of QB talent. That should be the floor…nowhere near the ceiling.

I think the staff would agree.
I liked Shrader for where we were as a program, and I loved his competitive spirit. However, that guy just loved throwing balls into the dirt on third down.

Shrader was a warrior who did great things considering the situation we were in as a program. He was one of the best sandlot players i have seen. At this point because of Fran we are able to set our sights higher. Who knows how this years QB will pan out but from a rating perspective Rickie has more upside. However lots of kids with good ratings have failed. The difference with Rickie over some of our recent QB transfers is that Rickie was set to start for LSU. Because the kid in front of him came back he decided to come to Cuse. The other kids had been passed over and were not in position to start at their current schools.
So, ratings aside, the fact that Rickie was on pace to start for LSU indicates to me that he has the goods.

And I believe Fran has players who can push him to be better.

Absolutely. Would love a bit more pass than Shrader had, but he was a leader and a warrior. I think this staff is building something that won't require many called runs, however. I'm also very fine with that.

I have revised my view of the most important qualities of a top QB. I always went with the “IT” factor followed by dual threat capabilities as the optimum college QB. I don’t think that view was wrong for 20 or 30 years.

But watching McCord play this past year has made me rethink things a bit.

The IT factor remains. I don’t think ANY kid can be a highly successful college QB if he doesn’t have some special degree of confidence and determination. However, I’m now thinking that being able to process the defense and make quick throws/decisions leaps ahead of dual-threat physical attributes. It even surpasses the old tag he “makes all the throws.” KM gave us a high functioning offense because he was a quick processing QB. Read, snap, read, throw. I don’t think we’ve ever had anything like that. And we may not have that level of efficiency for a long time.

Whoever wins the starting job this year, I hope they can present at least a strong element of that in their game.

IT also needs to have a good OC who gets IT:)
