Rickie Collins

I don't think they change the playbook for Rickie. I think they call plays that were meant for Rickie already that Steve was not as good at: rolling out for example, RPOs, etc. Sure, Steve could have run those, but his forte was more drop back passing. Rickie gives us the option to use those plays.

I don’t think there is any chance they change the playbook. Rickie was QB1 before spring game. Had complete knowledge of play book. Angeli won the job in the fall simply because of his experience and leadership. Not a knock on Rickie just the facts. Rockies hasn’t taken a snap at P4 level. Angeline played in more than 10 games. It is my feeling that Rickie will be fine. But this is game one for him. Regarding Carney, just a freshman. Very skilled QB, that’s why he’s here. His High School numbers we video game like. His time will come, however right now Rickie has the ball. Give him a chance to learn and grow. Old, old man out. Peace
After going back and watching his passing attempts vs Clemson I feel much better. Most of the throws were right where they needed to be. There were a couple drops. Maybe one throw slightly behind the receiver (which the receiver caught for the first down anyways). Then there was one where Gill had to become the DB and knock the ball away. All in all not too bad. I think Saturday he'll make most of the throws, with one or two having the chance to be intercepted. If he does have an interception or two hopefully it's on a deep throw.

I don't understand why deferring is always the correct choice. I would want the ball and the lead in certain games if I'm confident in my first drive game script.
Maybe not always correct, but there is a reason why the majority of coaches defer. 93% of NFL teams will defer. "There is statistical evidence to support that deferring to start the second half results, on average, in an extra point on the scoreboard and a 12% chance of stealing a possession." Sharp

Of course there are reasons why some teams take the ball first. I'm not saying that's a good or bad thing. But, there is slight statistical advantage to support why most teams defer.

From what Fran said in recent interview, Rickie and Steve have been joined at the hip in the training and film rooms and have become really good friends... I'm half expecting Steve on the sideline with a headset, tablet with stylus, etc. talking to Rickie in-between drives and feeding info back to Nixon and staff.

Also, confirmed nickname for Rickie with the team is "Slick Rick".

Fran continues to raise the profile of the program in a very positive way, and make it a “must consider” place to be for future recruits regardless of how many stars they have. Change is constant - well done coach.
he's incredible. I hope he never leaves, but my wife and I just had the discussion. we must enjoy the ride while he is here. i love what he is doing for us. I never was happy just to go to bowl and then compete for conference Championship ever 3rd year like Jake said we should do way back when. I want to win national championships or at least give it a run.

Not disagreeing but "Angeli won the job in the fall simply because of his experience and leadership" is not really the case - I think we would all agree that Angeli is far more talented QB than Rickie or just about any QB in college - he was starting to look on par with McCord
Talented or ready?

Sounds like Collins is at least as athletic, just not as polished. Accuracy could be an issue and processing.

Stats are great. But I admit I don’t understand how deferring has a greater chance of getting an extra possession.

He was extremely close to winning the job. Not sure how you feel about him or if you have had a chance to watch him practice but he has loads of talent. Hes just not as polished as Steve at this point. My only concern with him is that he is prone to forcing the ball.
Saturday Gill and JRS will have 4 - 6 inch height advantage across the board. They have a 6-3 safety, everyone else that plays is sub 6 ft.

Is he a running threat? I just read an article about how we will be seeing alot more designed QB runs with Collins, but I thought I had heard and I think even Coach Fran said he's not really a running QB?

Angeli gonna be all Lance Harbor on the sidelines.

When deferring possession to the second half, you have the chance of getting the ball twice in a row. End of first half and then to start the second half. That is not a possibility if you elect to receive to start the game. That is why it is statistical advantage to defer and elect to receive to start second half.

Boooooooooooooooriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing.

You know what's not boring?

Taking the ball and jamming it down your opponent's throat, whilst crossing the goal line of course.

Statistical analysis can be boring you are right about that. Personally I think getting the ball twice in a row is exciting but that's just me.

Thanks SU96, great observation and statistic here, this should give Rickie a significant advantage. All he needs to do is drop back. Try not to overthink, and confidently let it rip. Way easier said then done but gill & jrs will help Slick Rick out.

Yea But how often does it come to fruition? Say its 10% of the time. Is that also across all games, across all games at home, across games of teams of equal ability.

Then add it what happens when the team that gets the ball first scores, because many stats also show first team to score wins?

then remove the crazy weather games as well, games where one team builds a lead.

hard to find an stats on what the value is, Sure the scoring twice thing is some value, but so is the energy off who scores last in the half.

Who is SU96?

This doesn't make logical sense to me. It doesn't matter if you have the ball twice in a row, to end the first half and to start the second. Your reasoning doesn't make sense. Yes if you took the ball in the first half and also got the last drive in the first half you have one an extra possession that half. But that doesn't always happen. The same thing happens in the second half. What matters is the total possessions. One team gets the ball to start one half and the other gets to start the other half. Theoretically that should be the same number of possessions per team.

The question is, in what half do you want it to be more likely you get an extra possession? Or do you want to score first, causing the other team to play catch up and possibly pass more. Or do you want to see how things play out, get the ball first in the second half to answer what happened in the first half? Or maybe you want to be able to make some adjustments after half time and maximize possessions in the second half. Or maybe you feel really good about the game plan going in, and want to maximize possessions in the first half before the other teams adjusts.

I think it depends a little on what you are feeling for that particular game. I like changing it based on the specific game situation.
