He seemed to be in the background all the time, either on the radio or on TV. Even as a kid, I appreciated his professionalism. Some are born to entertain. Phil was one of those guys.
RIP to him. Condolences to his friends and family.

Phil's father, Leonard Markert Sr., was one of the founding board members of Le Moyne College who was instrumental in the Jesuits opening a college here.

Growing up, the Markerts were my neighbors. His son Rick was my classmate and one of my best friends. I spent a lot of time at their house. Rick passed away from cancer about 15 years ago. My condolences to Debbie and the rest of the family.

He was a great guy. He donated his time to direct plays at my high school for at least a decade. Our high school Facebook page is filled with tributes to the great plays and the immense time he put in for our benefit and how talented he was.

He used to play on a Thursday night trivia team every once in a while at a bar in Mattydale.

His father in law Les Dye played football for SU and then with Sammy Baugh for the Redskins.

Les was also the AD at Syracuse for a few years in the mid 1970s. He was the AD who hired James Arthur Boeheim.
