Sid Caesar, called by his collaborator Carl Reiner the greatest sketch comedian of all time, died today at the age of 91. I recently listened to this 1997 interview from the archive of American television. You might enjoy it to, (you can have it playing in the background while you do other things):

You-Tube has many classic clips from Your Show of Shows:

The spoof of “This is Your Life is probably the funniest thing in the history of television.

But before that was the “Admiral Broadway Review”:

And after that was “Caesar’s Hour”:

Reiner said of Caesar’s putting on a show like this once a week, (YSOS was a 90 minute variety show): “Chaplin couldn’t do this.”

Talk about a writing staff. Mel Brooks and Neil Simon joined Reiner and many others in crafting 'Your Show of Shows'. Larry Gelbart, who went on to create MASH, and who wrote the incredibly zany "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", wrote for Caesar's Hour.

And Woody Allen.
