Roberson...

If we make a deep run, as in the NC, then I'll willingly accept Grant / Ennis going pro after this year. They'd deserve it.

The entire team plus JB can go pro if we win a NC and I'd be happy. Unfortunately, it won't take a NC to improve their stock to the point where it makes sense.

Either way, they deserve it. And it's the nature of the beast. Enjoy both while we can. (Though I am still in denial about Ennis).

I don't quite agree with some of the posters in this thread talking about Roberson being able to contribute next year or the year after. I think he can help significantly right now. He has a nose for the ball on the glass & he looked pretty smooth with some of his O moves. Not to mention that he plays unselfishly and looks for his teammates. Truthfully, I did not focus on his general D, but I think the mere fact that he is starting to get some run must mean that Jimmy thinks he is coming along in that regard.

Frankly, I also think he can provide more immediate help than can DC2.

I agree he can help more than dc2 as well. His problem is Grant, Fair, and Rak in his way at the 3/4. I also don't think Roberson is ready on the offensive side. He's been great 2-3 feet from the rim but his shot selection has been awful.

Will be interesting to see how long Coleman is out for. If he's out for a few weeks and Tyler impresses in his minutes, could make for a tough call for JB. I've never really been that impressed with Coleman, and I like Rak more at the 5 anyway.

Roberson has much more refined offensive skills than you give him credit for.

Coleman being out [for however long] gives TR a chance to crack the lineup and garner more PT than he'd otherwise get--kind of like the opportunity Grant got last year when Southerland got shelved. TR is a bit behind the curve, so he needs to make the most of this opportunity.

And so is Ennis. Dont know why people keep making excuses of why he cant play in the NBA when theres tons of reasons he can.
I don't think anyone is saying Ennis can't play in the NBA. But he's just the type of kid that isn't oozing the premium athletic ability that NBA teams look for in the top 12 picks or so. I think Ennis will be good in the NBA; but whether he leaves this year or after his junior year, I can't see him improving his stock to a top 12 pick. He could improve his jump shot and his consistency in which he finishes at the rim, but he's not in the same class as say Grant or MCW who were supreme athletes that just needed to shore up some things to be a lottery pick. Ennis is what he is, he's fabulous and I hope he stays for 4 years, but he won't wow in the measurements, and (like it or not) that will hurt him in the draft.

I'm sure he is much better on offense than he's shown, but away from the basket shooting during games so far he's been far from impressive, and that's being kind.

While I appreciate and agree with you about his shot execution, this is not terribly relevant for his progress. I believe JB would have him do one or all of the following:
  1. Play defense on the wing and rebound.
  2. Take a big man off the dribble. He has been going baseline on these plays, converted one nicely today.
  3. Post up a smaller wing.
He has been ok at #1 and #2 and #3 will come with more minutes, and to your point, he won't take many outside shots until he gets more comfortable converting in the paint. He has an outside shot, but he is far removed from that now until he gets more acclimated to performing his "base" job of being a wing.

Roberson's defense has been spotty at times. Today, he looked better on defense.

Offensively, he looks very anxious. Anxious to shoot when he gets the ball, anxious to score right away. Today there was a great example of that anxiety. The very first time he got the ball, right in front of the foul line, he spun around, didn't even take a dribble and then took a shot. The game was moving too fast for him.

As the game progressed and he became a little more comfortable (and a little less anxious), he was able to show his skills. He made a couple very nice passes, ones usually executed by guys who play guard, not power forward. He showed he has a nice looking stroke from the foul line. He showed some hustle and the ability to get some tough, in-traffic rebounds.

Roberson's talents are enormous. I think we're starting to see trickles of that talent, and as you and others have said, a little confidence will go a long way.

We know The Beast will be unleashed. The light bulb is going on. He's like one of those light switches with dimmers; right now, his switch is not on full blast but when it is, we'll have to wear shades.

Speaking of anxious, cusetown1 mentioned that he tried to get rid of the ball like a hot potato. Wasn't it only a matter of time until we had another potato?

But he finally got into the flow of the game. He will be alright, and if DC2 has to recover a game or two, he might just be needed.

No doubt, tee. I hope he gets some time and plays a little more relaxed. I think it's great that JB is giving him minutes with our normal rotation players (as someone pointed out in the chat room today). Those minutes are much more valuable than putting him in during garbage time.

One other thing is he has an impressive frame but an off-season of strength training will be huge for Roberson. I think he has the kind of frame that will allow him to put on some muscle too.

That list is concerned only about the number of readers and the amount of comments it generates. It has nothing to do with accuracy. There are a whole bunch of foreign players who are going to fill in a good part of the first round. Listing them wouldn't create any buzz or threads like this one.

IIRC, Roberson also tweaked his hamstring in early practices and missed some time, which has probably set him back a little bit in addition to the NCAA issues.

In his limited play this seems to be one of the most impressive aspects of his game. He seems very adept at getting in and grabbing rebounds. Even if he doesn't give us much on offense, he seems able to give an extra possession or two and certainly hold his own in that department.

Fixed, because I believe he will bring plenty of offense down the road.
