Rocky Long

Amazing how much faith has been lost in Dino in a short amount of time. I guess a 5-7 season will do that to you, but... ya’ll trippin.

Some of you should back away from this site for a bit. Everything will work out fine. Check back in after the hire is made so you can hammer the actual hire. You know, the hire that hasn’t been made fast enough for you.

No, I don't think you understand this scheme at all.

A major tenant of the defense is that it is easier to recruit speed than size. The defense is built on speed. You don't need 300 pound freaks who run 4.8 40s and bench press 600 pounds to run it.

It is far easier to find athletic, undersized but relatively fast DL than traditional ones. If we can find a Chris Slayton, we would definitely take him. But you don't need those types of players to be successful running this scheme.
agree but you think the LB's we have been putting on the field could handle the system? LB's need to tackle which frankly has not been a strength of the program.

It seems most here are beginning to appreciate the notion of Rocky Long as SU's DC.

For the non-converted, consider:
  • He has taken SDSU to 9 bowl games in nine years (4-5 record). The Aztecs went to four other bowl games from 1969-2010 (41 years) when competing as what is essentially a Division 1 school.
  • Long took his alma mater, Univ. of New Mexico, to five bowl games in six years as HC from 2002-07. The Lobos have been to a total of 13 bowl games in program history dating to the late 1930s.
  • Since 2011, SDSU has defeated Stanford, Arizona State (twice), UCLA, Washington State, Cal, BYU, Cincinnati and Houston. There were a number of close defeats in there too: UNC and Missouri caught my eye.

For those that doubt Long's intentions here (and to be fair, that includes me to a degree)
  • After helping UNM achieve bowl eligibility for seven straight seasons, Long resigned after 2008 to become a DC at SDSU (a conference foe). He was SDSU's DC for 2 years before being elevated to HC when Brady Hoke departed for Michigan.

Editorial: My wife is a SDSU alum (as is my father-in-law). I lived in San Diego for five years and to this day, spend time in America's Finest City every year. So, I have been paying relatively-close attention to Aztec football for the last 20+ years.

All that said, I love Dino, thrilled he's here is with us. As others have stated, Dino has never led a program for more than 3 years (and year 4 was less than ideal). Long would certainly help Dino on the defensive side of the ball, but also provide some terrific tutelage/perspective to Dino as he plots course on the next 4-5 seasons of Syracuse football.

Long shoulda/woulda been a serious candidate for the USC job, with his age being the lone demerit. He is arguably the best football coach on the West Coast (I would say that he is). For the last decade, he's neck and neck with USC and Stanford for the best Division I program in the state of California, and that is saying something. With relevant context -- aka pound-for-pound, resource-for-resource -- there is no doubt San Diego State is just that.

I don't think people here realize what an absolute dump the Aztecs' home stadium is (formerly Jack Murphy-turned-Qualcomm Stadium). Long has very little to recruit toward, other than the San Diego weather and somewhat lax academic standards (compared to Cal, USC, UCLA, Stanford, etc.). This last point also helps underscore the fact that Long is adept at finding and recruiting "non-traditional" football talent, which is a skill that Dino needs more of in the SU Football Office. Long has also had 18 Aztecs drafted since 2011. In that same span, our SU program has had 12 players selected.

To call this a home run hire would not do it justice. Grand slam.

No kidding. Probably in about the same amount of time as well

I lived in Seal Beach for 10 years and my job was 8 miles north in Long Beach on the 405 freeway and it never took me less than 45 mins to get there. Often went to dinnner in Manhattan beach which was 22 miles away and would take 2.5 hours sometimes to get there...

At 70 years old he could be sick of it and also could make 500-600k here and it would be more money than 800+ he’s making there. Lot of reasons to leave at his age

Yes I think so. When our defenses have failed in recent years, I think it has been mostly due to poor play by the DL or inexperience by the LBs. We seem to give seniors their first chance to start at LB just about every year. Hard to be great when there isn't much continuity. I think that was a Ward thing...hope it will change.

I just think most of us are still shell-shocked at what transpired this past year. It appeared after the bowl win last year that Dino could do no wrong. He had a plan for SU football and it was succeeding. We would continue on an upward trajectory.

As has been discussed on here several times, there were signs we would take a step back this year but most of us had a belly full of Kool-Aid. A bad season after the bowl win is like ripping off a band-aid on an un-healed wound - it exposes all of the underlying issues we have been ignoring.

That said, I am glad he is our head coach and I still believe he will lead us to sustainable success. DIno is an intelligent man, I have full confidence that he knows what needs to be fixed and has a plan to do so.

this bodes well, I think

hope

Yeah, there hasn't been any chatter about him talking to other programs so if something does happen today, it seems like a good thing for SU.

Still seems strange to me that he'd end up in Syracuse, since he's been coaching west of the Mississippi for the last 48 years but stranger things have happened.

There would be posts stating that exact thing. Let the guy do his job and hire a DC is my point. People wanted him hired the day after the season.
I think it's pretty understandable that fans are getting antsy when our DC position has been open for over 2 months and tons of quality coaches, including full staffs, have been gobbled up since then. If we can get a Rocky Long or a Bob Shoop, would be well worth the wait.
Agree w/ those who say we need a good recruiter w/ the other spot, as our NE peers have stepped up in that regard.

Is the irony not lost on anyone that this is basically Shafer's Okie package...all the time?

If this happened (please football gods...let this happen) and we can get back to playing fast on the offensive side of the ball, I know the excitement factor is going up a notch. At least one notch.

After reading everything and thinking it over
Maybe he was in town to talk to our new DC about the style of defense he runs?
But it to much vague talk from him about why he was out here and maybe that was by design from Dino?
Lots of unknowns, enjoying the ride and hopefully some good comes out of it.

Because of our inability to recruit college ready DT’s I have been interested in us trying out a 3-3-5 for some time now. Add in a DC with the experience and credentials of Rocky Long and I think this hire would be a slam dunk .
hopefully we can find the extra coin to pay this man,

Agreed -- he'd be an absolute home run hire.
