Rudy Hackett & Jim Lee Day

Long overdue.

They were two years behind me and in those days, frosh basketball players lived in Marion or Kimmel. Can't remember which, but both dorms are now gone.

I knew a couple of guys who had been in my dorm and then moved to Marion/Kimmel. All around them were players' rooms. I used to hang there on occasion, and spent a little time with Rudy, the late Bobby Dooms, and Dennis Duval. All were great guys, and I especially liked Bob. Just a big, happy kid. Sweet D was great and very cool.

I recall Rudy as being very nice and on the quiet side. He was also the tallest person I ever stood next to at that point in my life.
Dooms and Stundis those are names from the past I haven't thought about in a long time. Steve would have probably had a special story about them.

Final Four team.

Yeah, both dorms were torn down earlier this year if I recall. I was on campus in October and walked by there and...nothing left.

Fond memories of Jabberwocky, in the basement of Kimmel. Man, did I see some great artists there on their way to stardom.

My dining hall was in my dorm; Watson. Then, they got rid of the cafeteria and I ate in Kimmel for a semester before moving off campus.
The Jab, with those popcorn buckets of beer for $.35. I'm talking mid 1970's.

Those guys each deserve their own individual day to be honored. But I won't make perfect the enemy of the good here. Long overdue. It makes zero sense that all these guys from the 80s and 90s and 00s were honored before Hackett and Lee.

Hackett averaged 22/13/3 his senior year (almost identical to Billy Owens 1991 season) and was the best player on our first ever Final Four team. It's incomprehensible that this has taken 50 years.

Several guys on my floor and I actually performed at Jabberwocky in 1977. It was a gong show. We were an Air Band. Made the semis. We were gonged out by Rosevelt Bouie. 😀

Can't even begin to remember all the acts I saw there during my undergrad and grad years. Keep in mind, the place only sat 70 or so people.

Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Roger McGuinn, Tom Waits, Tom Rush, and many more. One night, Peter, Paul, and Mary were playing the War Memorial and after their show, Paul Stookey walked into Jab and sat in with a folk trio that was playing that night. There were so many other really good acts that I never heard of before or after, but while they were playing, I just assumed they would become famous...but didn't.

I saw lots of great artists at Manley as well, but there was something very cool about having sat a few feet away in a small club like Jab and seeing people who were in the infancy of the huge stardom that would eventually find them.

We must been there at the same time. I was in Dellplain 72-73 then in an apartment on Standart St. Jabberwocky had some great bands/artist... Aztec Two Step, Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks and many more. Manley Field House Zoo section Member here.

Omigod, I saw Aztec Two-Step and Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks at Jabberwocky as well. Also Livingston Taylor.

Can't believe it's taken this long to honor Jimmy Lee and Rudy Hackett. They were great.

Ed-we messaged some years back. I remember you, although you didn't recall me. I recall you living in Watson...I think...and then in Dellplain. I lived off campus by then, but was up at Dellplain all the time as I was dating someone there and had several friends there as well.

You lived across the hall from Bob Costas and two doors from two of my close friends. One (Dave) was in LA (you may have been too?) and the other one (Bob) was an Architecture/Newhouse major. Bob and I are still in touch weekly via email. I'm sure there would be others that we would remember in common.

Yeah, Aztec Twostep. Forgot about them. My friend Bob (mentioned above) sent me a CD from them last year for Christmas.

I too was in the zoo. Lots of great memories there. My favorite was a Rutgers game, when a scarlet blight fan sat down in front of me. He had no way of knowing that the Zoo was the epitome of hostile territory. During warmups, he was standing and yelling insults at our players. Naturally, this offended my delicate sensibilities and I placed a party-open packet of mustard on his seat. Needless to say, he was not happy when he sat down, and I acted totally innocent.

Yes, you're correct. I was across the hall from Bob Costas in Dellplain. And yes, I was in LA... had our 50th reunion up there at ESF in October. I think the Dave in LA may have been Dave Rhea. Those were some good times. LOL, I remember that Rutgers game.

Dave’s last name began with B and ended with s. I had two other friends who were LA majors plus a number of others in Forestry.

They were great.

Jimmy Lee was the best overall shooter I have ever seen at SU - from mid-range to long-range to free throws.

He was at his best when it really mattered. Nothing ruffled him.

It was a pleasure to watch him play.

I remember watching Rudy Hackett while he was a frosh on the Tangerines. He was really, really thin.

He grew up and became a force.

By his senior year he was not only a great scorer but a terrific rebounder.

The 1974-75 team getting to the Final Four - and competing at that level - remains one of the great SU Basketball stories - if not the best story.

I did not know that Bob Dooms had passed away.

The "Sugar Bear" played tough - great game against St. Johns - and seemed like a good guy.

Any idea what he did after graduating from SU?

Tom was called "The Braintree Butcher" after he punched out a player from Manhattan at Manley. Great moment!
I knew Tom Stundis. I was dating an SU cheerleader, and her roommate was Tom's girlfriend (a very short gal). Since Tom did not have a car, we double-dated a couple times.
