Rutgers matchup questions/thoughts/guesses

Hmmmm, very interesting. Wondering if that is due to them having very good 3 point defense overall or were they maybe concentrating on Griffin.
3 point D is the weakest point of Rutgers D. They let teams shoot 3s more than anyone else in the conference but somehow are in the top half of the conference in 3pt% defense. I mark it down to elite closing out speed.

Griffin wasn’t a focal point for the 1/9 shooting game, Just had a bad shooting night IIRC but the 3/11 game was when Ayo was out and Griffin started. They def tried to shut him down that game. He played 33 mins

If Marek can somehow stay out of foul trouble for 30+ minutes there is no chance they match up with us on offense.

I’m excited to see if Kadary is ready for P5 competition. If he is, and JG3/AG/Woody? can hit some threes, we can beat them even being down 2 starters.

If Marek plays smart, and he usually does, he can get their bigs in foul trouble quickly. It may be a question of who gets into foul trouble first.
This will actually be a big test for Marek. If he can shine, offensively, vs these two 'elite' centers, it could mean he'll garner all-conference attention.

But I just can't see how he'll be be able to pull that off if he's playing center on the defensive end. I'd expect him to pick up 2 fouls in the first 10 minutes.

As always, In Boeheim We Trust...

They play exclusively man defense, right?
So here's a game where Marek at the 5 will benefit us against their 5s, at least offensively. Play Marek primarily out/away from the basket in his distributor/drive capacity - hope to see alot of that

Dolezaj shot 4.6 free throws per game last year... I'd like to see that be 8 fta in the first half against Rutgers. Because he'll be fouled out by then :(

First question I have is: can they shoot? Looking at their stats, only 3 guys have made a 3 on the season.

Ron Harper Jr: 6-16. Last year was 38-109.
Jacob Young: 3-7. Last year was 18-65.
Montez Mathis: 2-10. Last year was 19-64.
Edit: missed one - they have a freshman who is 1-3.

Nobody else on the team has made a 3. They’ve made 12 in 3 games. We made 12 in the first half yesterday.

They don’t seem to even attempt that many 3s. Are they one of these disciplined teams that will be able to hold the ball for 30 seconds and slow the pace to crawl, while working the zone and using the short corner and ending each possesion with a layup? If that’s their style, seems that it may be tougher to execute that this early in the season in their first real test. Also, usually those teams who hurt us in that way are conference teams that see us twice a year. The zone historically has often completely flummoxed out of conference teams, especially early in the season - when we play it well.

I believe their coach has a rep as a strong defensive coach and they only gave up 62 ppg last year. It will be interesting to see how our man to man offense flows against a good defensive team. We know we can light up any zones, but we haven’t really been challenged by a team that can play a solid man to man yet. Kadary will be big here IMO. We will need his ability to go by people and stress a defense. And Guerrier is a tough matchup for a lot of teams, so I’m interested to see how they handle him.

So glad we have a game against a decent team to anticipate these kinds of things again. It’s been a long 9 months. Cannot wait for Tuesday.

Based on your writeup of them. How are they ranked 24th in the Country ? I'm not impressed by them.

Agree completely. Rutgers physical style seems to go both ways as they get to the line an average of over 23 times per game. Of course that is offset by the fact that they are only shooting 55% from the line as a team!

This is a game that has a short JB rotation written all over it. I think we play 7, but really 6.5. Newton will be the first guy off the bench.

Well, with two starters out and 3 of the five bench players backup centers it kind of forces a short roataion, doesn't it?

I haven’t watched them, but from what I’ve read, they are really good defensively. That is their calling card. We will need to move the ball well. It won’t be as easy as the last couple of opponents. Rutgers is longer and more athletic. It should be a great early test.

I didn’t know about their free throw shooting. Luckily we have 15 fouls on the bench to throw in the middle. Tell them to rebound and play tough defense and foul if you have to.

We have enough depth defensively from the cupcake games that I think we can afford the fouls and physicality. Keep two shooters out there and don't give up anything easy. The old school BE style isn't always a bad thing. Marek should be ready to collect some charges if possible. It will be physical anyway you look at it so hopefully if called upon the big youngsters can come in and hold their own.

Whether or not Rutgers puts in a typical UNC offense with a big man at the foul line drawing MD up to contest and then passing to a cutting big will be the biggest question for me. That could mean early foul trouble for Marek, Quincy, or Allen. I'm sufficiently impressed with Woody that I don't think our rebounding goes down much if either of the wings goes out early with foul trouble, but if Marek has to sit extended periods of time, we are going to have a rough go of it I think.

Really feels like this one is a stretch this early in the season. They are ranked much higher than we are right now.

Thats just not true haha

They’re seven spots higher than us on Kenpom and we’re 5 spots higher on Torvik. AP poll rankings are meaningless, just something to feel good about.

With Marek on the floor we’re a matchup nightmare for most teams in college basketball

Harper Jr would likely be that guy. Problem is that if they go that route, they somewhat neutralize their best 3 pt shooter. The other guy they might put there is Mulcahy who is a good kid range shooter.

Agreed. We will be about 3.5 to 4 point dogs mainly because it’s a road game.

if we only have to count of marek containing the defensive paint we could be in big trouble. quincy has to sit his ass right under the basket imo. then we have to have ag crash the boards and newton spelling him with even better defense.

i don't care if quincy has to sacrifice his offense to play crazy defense.

Good stuff.
Should be an interesting game. Will they be affected by a 9 day layoff?

I am most worried about Marek and Kadary getting in foul trouble. With Bourama and Buddy out, if either of those guys get in foul trouble, we are in a pickle.

Their coach is the only reasonably successful protege of Calhoun and I expect he will play the same physical, extended in your face man defense JC was known for. A lot of bumping, holding and shoving. Perfect fit for the B1G.

This will be a great test for JGIII and Kadary. Can they pressure the pressure, bumping, pushing and holding? I suspect the reason Joe spent so much time in the weight room in the off season was to prepare himself for the pounding the Rutgers kids will put on him. Even though Kadary is from NYC and played for the best prep school in the country, I suspect it will be a shock for him too. Quincy and Alan are going to have to step up and battle down low for position. If we can rebound and defend in the paint decently, we will win because we have a massive advantage in terms of shooting, passing and overall skill.

So much will depend on the refs and how closely they call the game. If they let the Rutgers kids bang and pound and do not call fouls, we are in a world of trouble.
bang and pound ----yes that was big east basketball at its best. i agree that marek and kadray are at risk. who refs this game acc or big ten ???? rutgers will play total pressure and live off transition. we will need to execute and take advantage of the inside as they will come out. penetration will be important. marek has an opportunity for a big offensive game. they will most likely out rebound us and more second chance stuff.

And arguably their best (or at least most important) player, Geo Baker, remains out w an injury - I believe he's not expected back this week
Neither ere two of our vips

Yea, Pikiell is known as a good defensive coach. He’s a former UConn guy (gross). Last season, they were a top 10 team in Defensive efficiency, per KenPom.

Great for the west coast contingent :)
Those 9am games out here are dreadful.
I lived in Mountain Time for awhile and was not a weekend warrior yet...

NFL Sunday’s were amazing... 11 am kick offs, get to the bar an hour or so before game time for some bloodies with a side omelette and hash browns.

Sunday night football was done by 9:30.

It really hurts not to have Buddy and Sidibe in this game. I think we could win if we had them available. We need Buddy’s 3 point shooting, scoring ability and experience. And we need Sidibe’s size, rim and paint protection, and rebounding against their physical bigs. Their starting PG is injured so hopefully that will help us. We’ll see if our young guns can compete against P5 competition.
