Ryan Cabiles Canned / Robert Harris new Director of S&C

The Mavs purged their athletic performance director and strength & conditioning coach in the whole Luka mess. The Knicks picked up the head guy and had the best season this year in terms of games missed, while the Mavs were the worst. The strength and conditioning guy from the Mavs(and previously NY Red Bull Soccer) is still available.

This feels related to Alex Kline and his view of what a Strength and Conditioning program should look like based on his time in the NBA. I doubt Red, who was used to the way Cabiles did things, just says let’s switch it up in Year 3
Maybe Kline feels that way, but he alone doesn’t have the authority to make a change. He works for Autry. He’s essentially the Director of scouting and NIL management.

I’d wager this came from above Autry.

Okay. I will say from multiple reports (most all players) the nutritionist is horrible. they still eat dino bbq panera jamaica cuse , chik fil a, chinese , everyday after practice. there is 0 weight gain / loss plan , 0 nutrition plans, simply puts in orders for poor chain foods. the budget was cut this year in that area so i think they leaned more on school provided food , which is healthier. Still 0 nutrition plans which was most shocking to me when she came in. I could google “how many calories should judah mintz eat a day to gain 15 lbs over 3 months?”. I’m suprised she’s still there.
That is brutal.

Does Corey Parker still work for the Athletic Department? I thought he did an amazing job in the early 2000s. Take a look at Billy Edelin and Hak’s physical development

They need some new blood, no denying that.

He needs to get some quick wins and improvements, replacement has months not years to get them better.

It's a piece of the puzzle but a small one. I'm willing to die on the hill that more competitive practices do so much more.

I still can't understand how a backcourt practicing with JJ/Carlos/Cuffe/Moore/Bell/Taylor was able to replicate anything like a P5 backcourt they would see in games.

Agreed he doesn’t make that change alone but it’s more the influence and new perspective he brings to the Program.

This is really inexcusable. Nutrition and S&C is table stakes.

We have new assistant coaches who also make some recommendations. Coaches don’t work in isolation. You get feedback from many sources.

Seems like it would have been cheaper to hire an assistant than a nutritionist if all the nutritionists are doing is placing the orders for the players…

How come when Fran came in we had less people out with injuries then the previous years?
A new S @ C program seemed to help there.
Basketball needs to get better in that respect.

Hope this is not true but it would certainly explain some things if so.

Just phoning it in collecting a nice check for minimal work with no oversight and accountability

At least we can spend $6-7 mill on players even if we can't get them in optimal shape.

Hopefully we're getting the table somewhat set for 2027.

It’s hard to judge the nutritionist without insight into the objectives and resources she was given.

Nutritionists are there to make recommendations; they usually don’t have license to say, “this is what you’re eating, deal with it.”

Without a goal set by S&C to bulk players up, the nutritionist is really just there to make sure guys don’t get fat, which hasn’t seemed to be an issue since the new one joined. Athletes burning the calories these guys burn can eat a lot of takeout and not get fat. They’ll be consuming enough calories that the micros will take care of themselves. It’s all macros and there’s a good chance they’re automatically getting enough protein and carbs to fuel their bodies. If they don’t have a strength goal set by the coaches or S&C, there’s nothing for the nutritionist to target. We don’t have guys who need to cut weight, so what is there for her to do? Just maintaining player weight might be the objective she was given.

There’s also the possibility that on a bad team with players who weren’t expected to be around the following season, the staff gave up on caring how the players ate or worked out. If there’s no light at the end of the tunnel and you’re not bringing these guys back, why care? It’ll be more interesting to see if things change in this area with the new guys.

The new staff S&C coach should be the nutritionist’s direct supervisor.

Ever meal should be supplied, with great emphasis on the value of proper nutrition instructed to the players and reminded again and again.
