Scott Shafer

Per his Facebook, Scott Shafer retired from coaching. A lot of his former players commented, including Doug Hogue who said Shafer changed his life switching him from RB to LB.
That is too bad. He was one heck of a D.C. Converted Hogue and Smith (I think) from RB to LB. They both were very very solid. I would have no problem with him unretiring to be on the defensive staff in any capacity. He was not cut out for head coach though.

Odd. He's not even 60 and MTSU site still has him listed as DC\Safeties. Can't imagine he'd retire the first week of the season? Anyone have more details?

Edit: NM. That must be an old link. Roster/Coaches does not have him listed:

That's a pretty interesting idea.

Could mend some fences too.

I don't think you have to mend any fences. The guy that fired him was our AD for 10 minutes, and the head coach who succeeded him is gone too.

We brought Kevin Coyle back to be our senior advisor for the D, not sure how many guys like that we could afford. I really liked Shafer as DC though.

I'm still open to Saban joining as a defensive advisor though.

My understanding is Shafer was pretty bitter, and some things occurred during and after the MTSU game that made the relationship worse.

Looks like his son Wolfgang is following in Dads footsteps. Was a college QB for Ithaca but has been a defensive coach since graduating. Currently the Safeties and Special Teams coach at FCS school, Chattanooga. Lists Fayetteville, NY as his hometown on his bio. I would assume the family has love for the Syracuse area having lived there so long and their kids growing up there.

I'd hire Shafer back in a heartbeat to be a Defensive Analyst/Advisor of some sort if he has any interest in getting back into the business.

Do people not remember how bitter Shafer was when he got fired? There is absolutely no chance he would ever come back.

Erob/Fran recruiting with Shafers attacking style? Sign up for that in a second!
If he had 6-3 or 6-4 DB'S rather then guys 5-9 or 10, his defenses would have ben top 15 in the country.
