Yeah, I think that defense was a good match for our program and the Dome, and it showed itself to be pretty effective and disruptive without having surefire NFL guys all over the place.

Not crazy to think it would have looked even better with more guys that project to be on NFL rosters.

I don't have any juicy info really. I just remember there were accounts of some heated conversations, even involving Missy, and the whole cigar thing and stuff.

Quiter
I don’t know what a quiter is, but if you meant to insult him and call him a quitter then I don’t agree with that either. Was he a good HC? No. Was he a quitter? Nope. Even when we got our a$$ kicked in his time here I never got the feeling he lost the locker room, he just was in way over his head, and couldn’t get the talent but did find hidden gems for dino like a dungey and franklin. Wish him luck. (Would love to take him back on DC).

I agree that he was not long for the HC position (or right for it. He was too thin skinned), but I don't think he would have gotten it if not for DM leaving, and then taking Nate Hackett with him. He was the continuity hire that Coyle immediately corrected. He carried over a few good coaches, like Daoust, and brought in a few more like Clark Lea, Tim Lester, and Pat Perles, but he had bad ones too, (McDonald, and Joe Adam stand out to me). Very mixed bag and he had to carry us into the ACC, which he did with a bowl season.

Correct. As I remember, Missy claimed she took some verbal abuse from SU fans sitting in her area.
See I am not down with that at all. Wife and kids are off limits in my book unless you see the wife on social media and stuff getting into it. Even then you should probably not engage. Kids 100 percent off limits. If fans were indeed going after the wife and kids, that's not cool...at all.

I personally saw George Deleone and his wife get abused by fans during a basketball game. I happened to sit right behind him. It was brutal, disturbing and cruel. I felt so badly for them.

Dude lucked into a HC job with Marrone and Hackett leaving and then got super bitter with the only school that ever offered him a HC job. Was weird…

The whole “getting the band back together” and getting mad a Dabo for kicking a field goal at the end of the first half lol and ISIS and the cigar. No thank you

He was given only three years. He had terrible luck at QB - the number of injuries he had to endure at that position was hard to believe. He was fired by a new AD - who had no connection to Syracuse University. I understand how he felt.

He made decisions at times that I could not understand - on the field. Calling TO during Central Michigan's final drive following a sack, with the clock running and with CMU out of TOs - allowing QB Cooper Rush to throw for a last second tying TD. Ugh!

I do not, however, discount the notion that with time and funding he would have evolved into a solid HC.

I have no doubt that he was very instrumental in Marrone's success and I loved his aggressive style of defense during those years.

I hope he gets back into football.

He was a simpleton and cratered our program. AND he turned out to be a vindictive baby. Good riddance.

Not entirely accurate. GROB cratered our program. Shafer was part of the crew that brought it back and was a hell of a DC. Made some bad decisions / had some bad luck with injuries that lead to a bitter break up. He came back, kicked our ass and people didn't like it but the losers rarely like the results in life.

Great DC, just got Peter Principle’d. It happens.

Not sure why he’d be so bitter. He went 14-23 and 7-17 in the Conference.

Yeah Cherie that is really disturbing and those fans have/had no class at all. While it happens everywhere, there is no place for that. Likely alcohol was a contributing factor in their stupidity.

Respectfully disagree. Marrone brought the program back. Shafer quickly wasted Marrone’s rebuilding. And at the end of his tenure - the team was an embarrassment.

I don’t think Schaf got enough slack for being the HC during a tough time as we transitioned into ACC. He’s was coaching with big east level players. Good Xs and Os coach and players adored him, but couldn’t recruit worth a and was not a media guy.
