Scrimmage Recap

THIS.

The Zone Read is utterly useless when the D knows that the QB isn’t any threat to run, and will likely hand it off 99% of the time.
They can then sell out going after the RB, which is exactly what happened to us all. season. long. last year.

Tommy does NOT need to be Dungey2.0, and throat kick LB’s and truck safeties.

He just needs to take what the D gives in those reads, and he’s got more than enough speed to pick up decent chunks of yardage when that happens.

He’s also got an extra 10+ lbs of beef on him this year, so hopefully that will help him absorb and survive any hits he does take, or allow him to do quick keepers on 3rd or 4th and short, before the D gets set.

Tommy is VERY quick for a pass-first QB, and he’s a LOT stronger than you’d think.
To your point, Trevor Lawrence does this. He keeps it once or twice a game (sometimes more) - but that’s all you need to do to keep the zone read effective. Trevor is athletic enough, but he’s more TD athletic.. not ED athletic.

I think we should call Trill - "The Baker" because he is the "Turnover Man"
Not for nothing, but I think that logic/title should go to Cisco first, after all he is the country's returning leader in take aways.

I think Lawrence, at 6-6 220, might be more athletic than you think. He has to be accounted for on zone reads and he has designed run calls.

Oh, he’s definitely not “not athletic”... when he ran away from the defender in the CFP last year, I think everyone was like wait..what!?

I just don’t see him as being an Eric Dungey, who can flourish behind a poor-mediocre OL due to his athletic and improvisational ability. We all know Tommy isn’t doing that either... but TD absolutely had to be a threat to run.

Ok, so wait a second. It's not good that our D got 10 sacks and 4 interceptions AND it's not good that TD got a 25-yard TD run. So, in your world would a stalemate be best expectations? Something has to give in your argument.
I think you are twisting my point to fit your narrative to criticize.

I’m here to help ... The D has the advantage every year . They know our offense , or calls etc . Our RBs weren’t live , whistle blows when a defender is within 5 ft of TD
The 2 offense took the brunt as it should be the 1s . Remember after game 1 vs liberty
People praising the D , ward getting accolades. Then we got embarrassed. To sum it up it’s not real until it’s a real opponent
And that’s not a cliche it’s the truth with every team. You hear that from every coach. I’m not saying the offense shouldn’t be better but there are certain defensive advantages that you can get away with in practice that you won’t have with opponents especially when you have 1 week to prepare for them.

Good post.

Lawrence is super athletic. His QB keepers were the reason Clemson turned the semi game against Ohio St around. That 70 yard TD run he had was A+ speed and vision.

Tommy’s size is fine and the added bulk should help, but I don’t see his height or weight being bigger than Eric’s by reported measurements or by the eye test.

From the official Cuse.com roster pages.

Eric
2017 6’4” 222 lbs
2018 6’4” 226 lbs

Tommy
2019 6’2” 212 lbs
2020 6’2” 221 lbs

you also have to remember its a scrimmage.. sometimes you run plays to run plays not the ones you would use in a game.

Good point, the D often dominates these intrasquad scrimmages as they jump routes, gaps, and snap counts after learning tendencies by working against that system every day.

No TD isnt bigger than Eric. Not by a long shot unless he has really grown. Take a look at some pics of them together.

Yeah my bad you guys are right.

TD’s impressively durable imo too though.

I think the point is that Tommy is "big enough". 6-2, 220 is not anywhere close to "Nunes Territory".

Is it wrong that I REALLY want to see Tommy D throat kick a Linebacker? :)

TD doesn't even sniff Ed's size and physicality. Come on now. Its apples and oranges. TD is apparently the size of garoppolo. That said, he doesn't seem to have the same length as JG. size measurements are funny sometimes. But, ED towers over TD. at least 2 inches and 20#..mindset was not even comparable.

He doesn't have to be the size of a linebacker, like Eric was.

He just has to be strong enough to take a hit during the game and just bounce back up, whether or not it really, really hurt.

Sometimes in football you just have to fake it. That's leadership.

That's what used to drive me nuts about Troy Nunes. He would make some really good plays, and then he would fold up like cheap tissue paper when he got hit a couple times. That game against Georgia Tech, I think it was, at Giants Stadium being a great example.

Geez, dude, take a hit. Be a man. It's a man's game.

Back when I was a punt returner in HS, holy hell did I get creamed a few times.

D sounds promising but hard not be scared S less about the offense right now. Also interesting to see some names that were mentioned (Pierre) and some that were not (the wrs, our R frosh qb etc).

Dline could be a real strength this year but that oline, yikes.

Is my right hand stronger than my lft hand or is my left hand weaker than my right hand?

It's hard to tell what a scrimmage means.

That game was brutal to watch.

People need to get TD running from last year out of their heads. He was hurt...remember back to his running the year prior against Clemson and some of the others. He can tuck and run when not hurt. If he is healthy that will help with certain qb run plays calls and also it will help the oline.
I'm less interested in his down field running and more interested in his ability to feel the rush and buy time to throw the ball. Will he still consistently run to his right while retreating or can he make a rusher miss in the pocket or run to his left?

Yeah, I took my nephew to that game and saw CTO at halftime. I was so upset with Nunes going out after a hit, coming back in for one play, getting tackled again and going out of the game.
I was bitching about it to CTO at halftime in front of my nephew (who was about 10 at the time), and she looked at me and said, "Well, it's a beautiful day. Why be so upset? It's part of football. Let's go Orange." (paraphrasing)

Good advice from a very smart (kind and patient) woman.

Yes, if he can (1) feel the rush better, (2) step up in the pocket to let the rush go past him, (3) be able to throw running to his left, not just his right - then we'll be in much better shape. But geez, that line has to not just be a step above awful, they should be (and NEED to be) fairly good this year.

Good metaphor. I'm enjoying your season preview. Have several installments left to read. Thank you for your efforts and contributions every year, SWC. You are an anchor of the board.
