Scrimmage thoughts (long)

Great report Rocco!

Excited about the DBs, the DLs and the LBs.

Very pleased to hear about Lewis.

Bigger, stronger, faster.

That usually means more wins.

Lets hope so.

Word up--we're trending in the right direction at every position. It might take another year or two for the roster to finally pop, but I think we're close. At some point, things are going to just click. Very pleased with the talent / depth we're starting to compile via recruiting.

This last year's haul as well as some of the 2011 class (Esk, Reddish, Desir, Davis, Lynch) will prove that the staff is good at evaluating talent, getting in on them early and securing them.

Broyld is too good to be taking some snaps? How does that make sense.

He'd be better off right now lined up outside. The QB position is way harder to learn than WR or RB. Why would they keep him off the field while he's learning the QB position when he is good enough to make a big impact on the field at other positions? This offense needs playmakers now and the staff knows that. He will get some snaps at QB in the wildcat.

And frankly, there's nothing wrong with that. I don't view that as stifling his development--quite the opposite actually. If Broyld figures in as part of the weekly gameplan, he's going to have to understand his assignments / scripted plays every week. He's going to have to learn how to prepare and be ready to play every week. He's also going to get a steady dose of PT, which could accelerate his developmental curve in some important respects, which in turn would make him even more prepared [on paper] to step into a bigger role next season.

Whether that's at QB or continuing at some hybrid RB / WR position is anyone's guess at this point. But I wouldn't count him out at QB.

How did Macky hold up against walls and jones? Personally think he got too much blame last year with chibby making a lot of mistakes. From your post Rocco line seems the weak spot. Agree w you on the freshman o line though. Really like what I've heard.

That was one hell of a post Rocco. Really appreciate you sharing with all of us. Thanks a million.

Honestly the best observation post I have ever read about a team. Very detailed and thorough That includes Rahmes, Webbs and any other posters who have posted observations on this team. Nice work. Hopefully the injuries you speak of aren't severe or to key players.

Ben Lewis = Eric Decker. I have said that since he committed. He is just a football player that does what it takes to be successful at any level.

About as good as a tackling sled.

He did fine. Macky is now a strength of the OLine. He might be undersized, but the kid is strong as hell and has a good football IQ.

Here is the complimentary: I wasn't there, I don't even watch the real games but I can tell you what's wrong with the team and who sucks.

Rocco, thanks for post. It's good to hear report from someone who was there. After marrone's comments and then observations from some others yesterday I was ready to jump off ledge.

13 days, can't wait!

This is the best thing I've read in a while. Thanks Rocco. Hoping I can make it up for Northwestern.

I'm really excited for SU football this season. Maybe the most I've ever been.

A side note about watching games this year here in North Carolina...

The college I am an administrator at has a large auditorium on campus with an 80'' project screen/high def projector that I'm responsible for. I convinced the chair of one of our academic departments to host a leadership conference this past spring, and it required them to purchase Direct TV for the auditorium (Tim Tebow spoke via a satellite feed). Needless to say, I'm excited to be watching all of my Syracuse Games/NFL games on an 80'' projection screen

Rocco, do you think desir or eskridge will start over Wilkes? Also, who do you believe will be the okie?

August is for optimism, (like March in baseball and October in basketball). Thanks for a good dose of it.

If we're better it's likely to be an "all boats rise with the tide" thing rather than a hero on a white horse suddenly showing up. It's about being better across the board.

I think Esk will start over Wilkes. He is really good, and has great size.

Desir is behind Shamarko right now, but he will play in the Okie. Whig and Wilkes will too.

I think all of the DB's will get run this yr except for Ford & DVM. Hopefully the staff can redshirt them as they are the 3-deep at FS & SS right now. Whigham looked awesome yesterday. By the looks of it, he could push Lyn for PT this year, but I'm sure the staff won't want to throw him right in there (hence Reddish last yr).

Initially you thought the offense looked sloppy...did it improve over the course of the scrimmage or did you chalk it up to the defense being ahead of the offense at this stage in training?

When you and I were on the field last year for Rutgers I noticed that the linemen of Rutgers was noticeable bigger...it will be nice to see Cuse start to measure up.

You will be happy to know that the first song the team had blaring during stretches was Thunderstruck. It was loud...

Ok, which one of you goons is Coach Marrone?

I get that feeling too. I don't know that it's this year. Regardless, depth is so important. Not so much b/c you can accrue enough depth that injuries don't hurt -- very few college teams can truly not be hurt by key injuries -- but just because it makes for more competition for snaps and so many more options for using guys situationally (i.e. Lynch as a blitzer, primarily; or using Gulley for specific sets and types of plays and downs/distances instead having to use him 80% of the time).

It's great to hear really positive things, but Decker is 6'3", 218. Not sure I really see that comparison.

As a true frosh, Lewis is listed at 6'2" and 200 lbs. It's not inconceivable that he grows an inch taller and gains 20 lbs during his time here...is it? The largest concern I have with the Decker comparison is if Ben has similar speed. Bottom line is the kid is a player...he possesses intangibles that can't be coached.
