Sean Ryan: New QB Coach

With that resume, how great would it have been to have him on the staff both for, and going into, last season? I suspect things might’ve looked a little different, but we will never know. So instead, let us dream about what could be!
And maybe someone who can help with play calling so if Steve misses a game or 2 we don't end up with no offense.

I’d like to think no matter how good you are, coaches are still coaching and developing.

But if you’re looking for a stinker he turned into a good QB: Sam Darnold started reviving his career in Carolina after flaming out with the Jets.
All these guys have private QB coaches that they lean on. Nothing against the hire, but i’d say most of the top NFL QB’s spend more time working with their private coaches. Josh Allen for example had his whole delivery broken down and completely rebuilt.

OC is waiting…..?

On the one hand he has knowledge of many positions which helps understand all aspects of the game. That is great to have. He also called a game in the NFL.

On the other hand he has bounced around on O and even gone to the D side several times, so it seems like he doesn't have an expertise. Otherwise he wouldn't move around so much. You don't put a QB guru on D.

Also Rhule didn't bring him over.

He seems like a great addition to the staff. That is all that matters right now.

It’s about time…

We had a coach who actually is experienced in coaching QB’s, at a high level

and not one just given the title; no offense to those who went before him.

Seems like a home run hire. I know people are going to kill me for having questions. Why hasn't he climbed the ladder? Why is he out of the NFL?
I’m happy someone asked it. Doesn’t make sense that given all the QBs he has worked with, he couldn’t climb and wasn’t snapped up by a blue blood. I hope this is the place it clicks for him and he turns our QBs into world beaters.

Whelp I've seen it all
NO hire will ever be good enough for this message board...
Really? Is that how you interpret some of the comments?

I trust Fran. He's made great hires and quickly corrects the ones he doesn't get right. I have been ecstatic over Kehres and really liked the other defensive hires and oline hire. I'm not definitively saying this is a bad one, but there are some red flags for me, similar to the previous oline hire. Is it wrong to wonder why a guy that has coached so may NFL QBs isn't still in the NFL or working as an OC? My expectation would be more similar to a Jason Beck. I don't know the guy. Maybe QB coach is his niche and likes it, but that's not the norm in the profession.

I think I've posted on here enough that most people know I'm mostly objective and moderate in my takes. I think it's ok to have some questions here.

FWIW, I agree with your take on your posting history - objective and moderate in your takes. The questions you raised about Ryan's career path are not unreasonable.

I'm looking at this hire from a different perspective. If someone had told me that Fran would hire a coach with 18 years experience in the NFL - mostly working with QBs and was the QB coach of 2 Super Bowl winners - I'd be thrilled regardless of the rest of his resume. Ryan is not being hired as the OC. In that context, I'm not sure how much the points you raised matter. He is bringing all that experience and success to the SU QB room.

BTW, Ryan would likely still be on the Dolphins staff if Mike McDaniel wasn't fired.

Also some guys don’t want to be coordinators. Many are happy to excel at one thing. The notion that everyone wants to advance is admirable but not always the case. Some folks like digging ditches and some like being the ceo.

Regardless he has worked in good offensive systems, and with great QB's. So if our offense gets shaky like it did last year, he should be able to help Nixon fix it. Better then tanking 8 games in a row, because you don't have a backup plan.

It's not that complicated when you look at who the head coaches/OCs he's worked with are and where they went. Part of rising the ranks is following a HC or Coordinator who gets a HC job.

Coughlin retired, He's worked with Darrell Bevell as an OC twice (Detroit/Miami) but Bevell was under McDaniel at Miami and they just got fired. Nixon in Carolina (who took over as OC after Joe Brady got fired, so that reminds me good coaches get fired all the time), Rhule is at Nebraska, BOB is at BC and George Godsey is the OC at GT and Ben McAdoo is on the Patriots defensive staff now.

Of those various branches of the tree, why not reunite with Nixon relatively close to your home.
