Class of 2023 SF Marcus Adams (CA) Offered

I think we’ll end up with 2 commitments for 2023. Adams and Patterson will likely be our 2 person class. Then I think we get a couple guys in the portal.

Will be interesting how they play Adams at Cuse. Is he the 6th man that gets starter minutes? I think Benny ends up transferring.

Or does he replace bell and you have a line up like:

Mintz
Taylor
Adams
Brown
Hima/does Jesse return?

Bench
————
Bell
Copeland
Carey
JBA
Patterson
Grad transfer combo guard

There’s a chance we have a starting lineup up of:
Mintz
Taylor
Adams
Brown
Jesse

That might be our best starting lineup in 10 years
We cannot have Hima as the starting center next year. That’s not a winning team.

I think Hima could be a good starting center next year. He's already good enough defensively. My only problem is I dont think I like both Hima and Brown starting together. Seems limited offensively. I would have no problem with Hima, Adams, Bell (assuming both are ready to contribute). Or Edwards, Brown, Adams (if Edwards came back). Hima, Brown, Adams would worry me.

If Jesse leaves, I can see us playing brown at the 5 a lot.

I’m not sure why Taylor is plugged as a 2 but Bell is never considered for those minutes.

Ugh. That’s the Lydon and Marek move. It will work against certain teams, but not anyone who has a decent big. Happy we will likely get Adams though.

Agree its not ideal, but thats where i see jb going if we dont bring in another big

Because that is where our best inch-for-inch rebounder plays, and Bell doesn't rebound. ;)

He brings zero defensive presence in the middle of the zone. If Jesse leaves, I’d be shocked if they didn’t bring a big in from the portal.
I hope you're right. Devo mentioned surrounding Hima with offensive players, so it's possible the staff is thinking Hima/Carey are the guys next year. Which could mean Maliq ends up in the middle. Brace yourself.

I agree with most of what your saying. I don’t think Hima is as bad as you are thinking. That being said, I can tell you right now if Jesse leaves and we land Patterson, which I fully expect. No way in hell we are carrying more than Hima, Carey and Patterson as centers. So Hima would be the starter. We’ve seen it before all the time, even on some of our best Syracuse teams under Boeheim. Where the center is not an offensive threat but relied heavily on their defense, rebounding and picks on offfense.

Especially with what likely comes back next year in Judah, Taylor, Bell, Brown, possibly Adams coming in. And likely a grad transfer combo guard. We’ll have enough scoring power to rely on a defensive minded center.

Now do I agree would it be nice to go grab a transfer center in the portal that can get us 8-10 points and 7-10 boards a game and a solid defensive presence…yes. But we’ve this story time and time again where Boeheim does not hit the portal that hard and if we have bodies at the position on the team already, Boeheim would rather roll with those guys. And in this case he has 3 centers to choose from. Admittedly all 3 are very green but we know how he rolls

If coach comes back and it’s his last season, all bets are off on how he might want to use the portal. You get as good as you can get.

I think we have to land an impact transfer who’s ready to be a starter at SG or SF. If Jesse leaves, we’ll need a quality center as well.

Hasn’t the staff determined that Carey isn’t really a center? I thought multiple people have said he’s projecting to be more of a power forward like Ajak (hopefully more talented). We need a quality center if Jesse departs. We can’t rely on a freshman like Patterson as Hima’s backup.

I do believe Jesse is gonna come back. But if not, we need a good center, even from a mid major. Look at guys like Burns, Keve Aluma (from Va Tech last year), Paul Atkinson (from ND last year), etc. There are quality centers out there who can provide both defense and offense.

Quinton Post or Joel Soriano would be good starting center from the portal as grad transfers

Good examples. They have to find a productive college player. Too many projects between Hima, Carey and this Patterson kid. It just doesn't make sense, after lessons learned from this year.

One way or another, we will need a point guard. So many unknowns - does Mintz declare or stay and so who will be his backup even if he stays? If Jesse leaves will Hima start and again, he’ll need a backup, so then who? Will Carey even be physically ready? Again, there will be a real learning curve during the season regarding the zone. Getting one and done portal players results in continuous annual replacement issues. Regarding SG and forward - we will definitely lose some of our freshman if we go the portal route thus even more uncertainty. Who will be our backup power forward if Maliq is seen as the answer next year? Benny, would he stay in that role, definitely leave? Portal players aren’t coming to sit but how do you guarantee anything with so many parts in flux and so many unknowns with fit? I‘m sure glad I‘m not the coaches having to figure this all out.

Let's hope the NIL deals for Judah get it done. We have to get the combo of talent and continuity for a change.

Hima is a center to give someone a breather. If he's a starter, one of two things happened:
  1. The program couldn't land a transfer despite a starting job being a huge selling point.
  2. His game took a huge leap over the Summer.
If it's the first one, they are in for a long year. The playing time for an upperclassman is there if that's what they want.

Won’t win 10 fjdifjf games. Not 10. If that’s the 2026 starting lineup - awesome. 2024? We’re screwed.
