I have a picture with Lord Stanley's Cup. I haven't won it multiple times.

Still a dope picture.
I’m sure. No, I reconcile a difference between a fan with a major championship trophy vs what this is. This looks like he is representing that he was a part of it. With you, it’s an appreciation of it. Small difference semantically, major difference representationally.

To me it looks like a recruit holding a championship trophy from a school that is recruiting him.

I’ll say it again: posing with a trophy you didn’t win is beyond cheesy. Not his fault—it’s a team theme. One that needs to go away.

Whether it's Tyler Betsey posing w/ the NC trophy, or some random recruit on a visit posing w/ Ernie Davis' Heisman, most if not everyone seeing the pic would know the kid didn't win it themselves.
My kids and I posed w/ the Mets 6-9 and '86 championship trophies- and they're some of our favorite family pics. Years from now Betsey can brag about it to his future brood. Really not that serious.

I noted the difference in the subsequent post. Not the same thing.
Didnt say it was “serious,” and I especially noted that it wasn’t the recruit’s fault.

That doesn’t make it any less cheesy or silly.

Big difference between a fan with a trophy vs an actual athlete dressed in the garb and holding a trophy. It’s cosplay. How would that image look if he had been on that team? Pretty much the same. I’m sure you and your kids didn’t look like they had just won those trophies.

Isn’t this common practice at other schools as well? Granted a trophy that’s from within the last few years hits different that one 20 yrs ago…

Personally it doesn’t bother me they do this but I also get your point. With that said if it’s common practice and the kids and parents dig it then it’s just us having our own Seinfeld episode on the matter

I am pretty sure it is. It took me about 30 seconds of Google to find this one for Kentucky.

I am pretty sure I've seen it done at Kansas also. So I think it's pretty common, unless you're Virginia Tech and have an empty trophy case :)

Perfect encapsulation.
Except, i don't do it with that high, whiny voice...

Even that, though, is sufficiently different. The trophy is just one of many components in the image. I don't think it's a small nuance to suggest that holding it/posing with it makes it look like you're taking credit for participation in it, when you're outfitted the same way the actual winning participants might have been.

But, whatever—finding other examples of something cheesy doesn't exactly mitigate the cheese!

Oh, the humanity...
