Class of 2024 SG Aiden Tobiason (DEL) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (4/13/26)

I highly recommend listening to the Mike Waters pod with Tobiason. He explained his freshman year he was a 3 and D player who only took the easy open three. Last season he had the ball in his hands at the end of the shot clock and was expected to create. I think in a system where there is less usage his percentage will go back up. Shot looks like some who can really shoot it when his feet are set.
I listened to some of the interview. Cool stuff! Aiden mentions that he will get an opportunity to see some time at the one. Great interview. He has developed his game while at Temple.

He sounds like a great kid! Excited to see him play!

Tobiason has an 11.9 Assist%, a 9.8 TO% and 21.1 Usage% with .604 TS%

Excellent numbers for a SF or SG. And his low 3pt % is actually dragging him down.

This is not a guy you want playing point guard. He is a shooter that can pass, not a point guard that can shoot.

I normally don’t put a lot into highlight tapes, but his really impresses me. The thing I like the most is that he looks to be a true three level score that moves without the ball. He had several threes where he was coming off curls, not just standing in a spot, waiting for somebody to find him. I bet he finished more back door cuts in this highlight clip in the whole Syracuse team did last year. He is a strong finisher around the rim and also shows the ability to finesse his way to a basket. He made a huge jump between his freshman and sophomore year, and I believe he will make another big jump and can be our star this year.

He could get a lot of and one. He kicks out his right foot when he shoots jumpers.

Which side dish would you like to order to have with your words?

I'm not exactly sure your metaphor... Are you saying I'll have to eat my words?

I'm certainly not down on Tobiason, I think he's highly likely to be our best player next year, out of the guys we have so far.

His offensive versatility is going to be fun to watch. It will be very nice having a guy who can shoot the three, drive to the basket, and finish the alley oop. He also is a fine passer for a small forward.

I don't think Tobiason is any kind of point guard. But, guys evolve over time.

Silent G.

Yup, another exception that proves the rule. Maybe we should talk about Anthony Mason too!

To be fair, I've been wrong before. I thought Red was going to turn it around this past season. It would be nice to be pleasantly surprised by Tobiason being a really good point guard.

Some highlights in game vs USF

Thank you.
He had 22 points in 39 minutes, on 9-16, 2-7 (3). 3 assists, 0 turnovers.

What i noticed: he seems to have been 'scored on' quite a bit, even though he was doing (mostly) the right things on defense. He's always active. But, he has zero rebounding instinct. I saw that pretty immediately—he just accepts where he is on the court and versus opposing players and doesn't seem to negotiate around or through them to pursue boards. I then found the box score and saw he had a dead man's rebounding stat. Which is crazy for his athleticism and size and activity.

Beautiful shot stroke. Great energy.

In the game action I saw, Tobiason does a decent job on the box out, but he doesn't go get the ball. Hence, he's helping the team rebound, but not getting the boards himself.

Looking at our team as currently built (of course the caveat that we still are recruiting), we will similarly have the ball in Tobiason's hands frequently at the end of the shot clock. He looks like our one guy who can be a triple threat in isolation with little time to create.

Who else would you choose? Doty? Sometimes. Dual? Maybe. Anthony? Only with significant growth. Moesch, Mahmutovič? Largely unknowns.

Yes, he's a good option as a late game closer.

I think Tobiason was playing SF and maybe some SG there at Temple though and he was in a scorers role mostly. So not sure the fact that he had a specific assist% means quite as much while playing that role. If Dual is the starting PG and plays 27 MPG and you play Tobiason there the resulting 13 MPG. That now gives us that other scoring threat on the floor in those line-ups. You could play Doty at the 2 and MMM at the 3. MMM doesn't seem to be very physical but he's 6'-7" and sounds like he may be heavy enough. Think he's going to have to play a lot of SF with our lineup. I think Tobiason playing some PG might work. I'm sure the TO% may be a little high but its not like it wasn't last year with Nate running it at 3.1 TO's per game. It keeps us very long up top on defense as well. Tobiason will be a solid threat to score when he drives so they should collapse and I think it will help that you have MMM who can stretch the floor and then Doty who can hit 3's often enough. It seems the rest of the guys are not stand around and watch guys. They are team first, set screens for team mates and move the ball types of players. If Gerry and his staff can run a better designed O it could result in a reasonable efficiency offense. Tobiason adds more scoring to the floor which seems to be the main concern most have.

The one thing Tobiason really has going for him at point is that he doesn't turn it over. You might be right, having Tobiason slide over to point guard when Dual is resting might be better than Moesch.

Wilson, White, Mahmutovič, Doty and Tobiason could be our best offensive lineup and still hold its own defensively. Dual provides more defense and possibly steadier point guard play, with less overall offense.

If I were guessing a JB style 7.5 rotation, it would be Wilson, White, Mahmutovič, Tobiason, Doty, Dual, Goodrick/Sibi, with Anthony getting regular playing time and whoever loses the PT battle at backup center and Moesch being an emergency player.

At this point, Moesch is the fifth guard in a four guard rotation. Possibly he beats somebody out as the season progresses, or he can fill in if somebody gets injured.

I think the Siena kid, if he's healthy, looks like our best offensive center.
