Class of 2019 SG August Mahoney (NY) Portal from Yale

The worst possible card for me on the river.
I have never seen quads play against nothing. For some reason that hand always catches a monster full house as opponent. Always pays off

Not seeing the need for this guy. If we want to play a more secondary ball handling/slashing shooting guard we have JJ. If we need a guy to knock down threes we have Moore. If I was looking for one thing in an additional guard it would be lock down defense. Is this guy capable of that in the ACC? Certainly not what is advertised in his highlights. He is not that small, which I guess is something, but he does not look that fast either.

Defense was a much bigger problem for us than offense last season. It is looking like an even bigger issue this year. This guy gets us no closer to solving that problem. If the plan next season is to have a horrible defensive guard in JJ next to a sub 6 foot pg then we need a backup who can actually play some defense. Moore and this guy as backup would basically guarantee more defensive struggles.

The music is almost done playing and we have a few empty seats and he needs a place to sit.

I think there’s a reason we weren’t linked to him initially. He does seem similar to Moore, but I don’t think we can be too picky this late in the game.

But to me it seems like JJ, Moore and Mahoney are all strictly 2s and none are partially good ball handlers/distributors

Moore is a freshman. Reality is this kid would come in confident and proven as a shooter and a very effective player off the ball as a cutter and moving the defense around forcing teams to chase and follow. You take a kid like this and find a way to make it work. There aren’t any defensive specialists out there left. Westry is that guy and the gamble is he will be healthy enough. We won’t have great individual defense so we need better team defense and rebounding. That and if McLeod is healthy a legit shot blocker if we badly need it.

Fair enough. Still feels like we are not filling the gaps that need to be filled, even if he is a good player. JJ is at least a solid ball handler but not a distributor.

I think 3rd year JJ will have no problem playing point at stretches for carlos. We all know Judah is very ball dominant and he didn't get much opportunity to show his skill set. With above average passers in, lampkin, davis, a pure pg in carlos, plus running an offense that doesn't depend on ISO ball it wont be an issue. I love the mahoney fit, you know what hes going to give you (elite shooter thats elijah insurance). Plus surrounding a big body center with elite shooters is a great idea.

This kid would instantly be the best shooter on our roster and produced against power conference teams. There is a decent chance he may out produce JJ at the 2.

Dingle/Ledlum lost the court case so no Mahoney. Ill see you next week Lucas Taylor

Does it have any impact that in their cases they portaled as juniors to their current schools they are petitioning from?

Would be a question of if Red is willing to have a knock down shooter vs a secondary ball handler at the 2. If I was more confident in who we have at PG then I would be all for a more shooting oriented 2 guard, but we may need JJ out there to have another guard who can create his own look.

Also think Bell would still be our best shooter. 42% but against stiffer competition.

If we can get this guy and he can average anywhere from 10-13 ppg while shooting 39% plus from 3, it’s a great get. We will have much better paint play and shooters ready to catch and shoot. This was the type of guy I was hoping for a month ago.

I seem to remember a fluke play where JJ flew over a guy and landed on his head. More depth can’t hurt

This is just dumb to me- with everything else in terms of what they are doing for student athletes this is where the courts decide to draw a line? Just dumb. Unless I’m missing a loophole that this would open they are worried about
