Class of 2019 SG August Mahoney (NY) Portal from Yale

This is just dumb to me- with everything else in terms of what they are doing for student athletes this is where the courts decide to draw a line? Just dumb. Unless I’m missing a loophole that this would open they are worried about
I am not as up to speed as others but I believe that if the courts didn't draw the line here, then the unlimited eligibility floodgates would have basically been opened. The Ivy Leaguers who didn't play during the covid season didn't have a real argument.

So Mahoney was a senior last season and was looking for a fifth year as an Ivy leaguer?

He was a 5th year senior academically and played his 4th year eligibility wise since the Ivy League canceled the 20-21 season. So he would be, like the others in the lawsuit a 6th year senior due to losing that year due to cancellation. Everyone else played that year but the ivy didn’t.

I guess it would depend on how the suit was structured. If it’s explicit to cancellation of a season I would think it’s narrow enough but if it’s open ended then yeah who is to stop someone from coming back for their 5th year or even 4th year 10
Yrs later etc

Once again, trying to thread the needle and failing. We are far too dependent on these scenarios magically working out, when more often than not they don’t.

I imagine the logic is that since they didn’t play during the Covid year they didn’t lose anything. The extra year was predicated on restoring a year of eligibility to players that participated in empty arenas and the one site NCAA tournament after no tournament the previous year.

I suppose so, but the players who opted out even though their schools did play still received an extra year, correct?

I don't believe so. That defeats the argument that 2020-21 did not count against anyone's eligibility clock, They still essentially got six years including a redshirt to play four but were not rewarded with an extra year if they decided to opt out. Trying to find an example.

I would say that scenario is a bit more clear cut than the schools that gave the athletes no choice but I get the overall premise. It’s ideologically at odds with everything else around college athletics today to be fair too.

I think the argument was "If you do decide to play, it won;t cost you a year of eligibility."

You can never have enough guys 6'7 to 6" 9 who can Bang
6'7 power forwards?? eh...idk about that being good enough height vs top 10 squads...or just teams with size...

Yup, you definitely fold without that third queen. :(
That’s the kind of hand I get when I’m playing with my pals and all in at the end of the night.

And now, the rest of the story...

Under the agreement, the NCAA would be required to grant an additional year of eligibility to Division I athletes previously deemed ineligible under the transfer eligibility rule since the 2019-20 academic year.

If you transferred multiple times and had to sit out a year under the old rule, you get that year of eligibility back.

I don't think this applies to Mahoney. He already spent 5 years at Yale, and played 4 seasons.

But Chris Bleich could probably come back for a 9th year. ;)

I still don't understand if this applies to Mahoney since it was not him that was deemed ineligible, it was Yale and the Ivy league that opted out of the Covid-following season. Does anyone have any clarity if this whole thing would help grant him an extra year? The guys from St Johns were denied before so not sure if this would also apply to them. Does anyone have an idea?

I think the answer to all of your questions is: "Wheelhouse."

Operative word I suspect is “previously”. Thus 24-25 would be “current” and not apply.

6-4, when you go 3 guards with Bell off the floor he doesn't hurt you. A great add if they can get him for one year.

This is the key. There's room for him if he can sometimes guard a SF.

Happy seeing Westry play the other day, even if he didn't look very sharp in that clip, with the stumble in the lane. Autry is willing to play big guards on small forwards.

That can work, until you get a swingman like Royal Ivy trying to guard a small forward like Melo. LOL

I still want another , just so we have 4. Get SOMEBODY.
