Well we need that I will tell ya. I’m a wrestler and can make 6 outta ten on average or I did when I was younger. We have to improve that. Lost us Houston game plus I’m sure of a few others.

John Wallace made the jump as a shooter 0 as a frosh to 42 pct as a senior.

Kris Joseph went from a 20 pct 3 pt shooter to 35pct

Wes Johnson went from 29 pct as a frosh at Iowa state to 41 pct the year he played here

Rautins went up every year from 32 pct to 40 pct

Scoop went from 27 pct to 37 pct
Not possible. It never happens. :D

I would add to this Otis Hill’s mid range game that developed out of thin air.

Gavin is a junkyard dog type of player. Will grab rebounds through the trees that you think he has no business in grabbing. Syracuse has lacked that type of player for a long time. He also really improved his 3 pt shooting percentage from freshman year to sophomore year and credited G-Mac with keeping him honest with his form. Would not be shocked to see him continue to add to his skill set and get better as he is that type of player who seems to love basketball and love winning.

And if I remember correctly during one postgame he credited GMac with telling him to stand tall through his jump shot which led to more consistency in his shooting. Think there is more to unlock there.

I think what’s annoying is that you’re letting your preference turn into relentless negativity and beating the crap out of near every move

Let it play out. Wouldn’t you love to be wrong?
Would love to be wrong. But the relentless positivity on a kid coming from Siena turning into this lights out shooter is just as annoying.

This board does this with every player, and then wonders "why we aren't making the tournament, the guys we have are so good!"

that is the nature of this board, as the comments pile up, they take on a momentum of their own, until almost everyone is on the same page, creating an alternate reality. Always fun for me to watch the over the top optimism in the beginning, with the dog pile negativity at the end

Neutrality has become too positive in recent years though too. The fact neutrality is annoying.. is annoying.

Yeah.. but we all know this is pass/fail now.

There are plenty of examples of player growth , including shooting as I posted a number of them here at cuse, so it is not unreasonable even if it’s not predictable.

End of the day - this is an all in money play now. Hire the most marketable guy you could have that isn’t costing millions in a buyout, pay up for a loaded staff of rising star assistants and go big on NIL funding.

Modest optimism is widespread… if it works out we won’t be looking back for a long time and if it doesn’t then hoops will reside in the basement with the BC’s of the country.

You’re lumping everyone together with “board”. There’s a wide variety of opinions here. I will speak for myself that I was heavily skeptical of JJ the minute he committed here. And I myself even said it’s ok to be skeptical of Doty’s competition, but when you start posting items that are objectively false you deserve to get called out.

Elijah Hughes went from 27% at ECU to 37% here

FT went from 68% to 81%

Btw, mid 80’s FT percent is a very good sign his 3pt will grind higher

I know you are making fun of the comment but I have watched every game as I am a Siena alum. I don't think he will ever be a lights out shooter, but he is a super hard worker, and I wouldnt put anything past him.

Im
I’m trying to remember that last really good two way player for SU. It’s always seem to be either or.
I really like Edwards on both sides. But it's hard to remember if he was really that good or if he was just better than we'd had in that position for a while 😅

I like how he keeps the ball high and his form is simple. A lot less to go wrong. I wouldn't be shocked to see another incremental improvement to his percentage. So much of it comes down to the quality of shots any shooter gets. Hopefully we have an offense that opens up good shots for our shooters.

With the staff looking like a home run so far, if the roster is built right he shouldn’t be taking more 3s than he did last year. Maybe 3 a game on average vs 4.

I can respect that. I’m a relentlessly half full guy and l’m keenly aware of how that plays sometimes. Reality is good.

Obviously if no one had takes and waited to see this place would be a ghost town…
