Class of 2024 SG Gavin Doty (NY) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (4/7/26)

When you start writing what Doty will do as though it's an SNL sketch, I know there isn't enough evidence to back it up.

Doty beat Bill Brasky in a drinking contest! Doty has an unofficial 9.47 in the 100 meter dash! Doty once saved a mother stuck under a burning Ford F150 by lifting it up with one hand, while pulling her out with the other.

Upon Chuck Norris' death, his soul rose from his body and entered into Doty's claiming "this is the only human being that is worthy of this much manliness".

Doty went 14-0 with 14 knockouts in Mike Tyson's Punch Out!

Godspeed to all. I like Doty. But good lord the expectations are outlandish for this kid.
I think it’s his mom or sister

I haven't read this whole thread so if this has already been mentioned my apologies. From the little I've seen of him I keep thinking of Marty Byrnes. Different positions but both upstate kids that were under recruited and used a high energy style to outplay more talented opponents. Winners that get the most out of their abilities.

I suspect due to where some have set expectations for him it's far more likely he doesn't meet the lofty expectations some have for him. Does he have the beef needed to outplay his position at the ACC level?

The Doty mythology is already pretty thick.

And for that reason, he shall forever be known by the nickname... Thickburger.
If this kid outplayed some people's expectations he will be a 1st round draft pick next year. Realistically if he can play well enough to be an average shooting guard that's all you can expect.

Never met the kid but I respect Gerry’s opinion and believe this kid will be a difference maker.
And I support anyone who works his ass off to improve, naysayers be damned.
There have been damn few of those players on SU for the last 10 years.

No matter what I think, or other posters think, we will all see how he performs next year when the games start.

Though I do think you can come up with a better nickname than thick burger, sounds like an offensive lineman or a fat cook!

This is an insane statement. You don't think any of the kids in the last 10 years have been working hard to improve? Or you just think Buddy and JGIII worked hard to improve and no one else?

It is an objective statement that JGIII's demonstrated fitness improvements indicate he worked harder as a Clemson player than he did as a Syracuse player.

I never followed Sienna even though GMAC was my favorite SU player of all time. So I don’t know about Doty. For people that do know how does his game translate to the ACC? And do you think he can average around 15 to 18 points a game at SU this year? Is he a shooter or a driver or a bit of both? Thanks in advance for answering my questions.

And who was his position coach when at SU?

I think I agree with your comment. Doty isn't Davis or Lucas Taylor. But they were just recent examples of guys who were very good at lower levels that were out of place in the ACC. Both of them missed certain physical attributes that made the game harder at this level.

Doty, similarly, lacks the athleticism that dominates wings in the ACC. Maybe his skill level will make up for it, I don't know.

One thing to consider is that both guys referenced came from leagues significantly higher rated (in the last year they competed there) than the MAAC was in Doty's sophomore year. Not only does he have some of the same concerns (below average size for P4 at his position, lacking P4 athleticism), but he is coming from an even weaker league. Huge hurdles for Doty to jump.

Conversely, Red also was selecting Davis and Lucas Taylor in a time when he had insufficient budget. He got the best players he could without any money after everybody he really wanted went somewhere else.

Doty clearly wasn't an also ran, at least not to GMAC. I genuinely think GMAC is really excited to have Doty on his team next season. I hope it doesn't become a legacy defining decision in a bad way.

Even very smart people can have critical blind spots.

EDIT: Just so we have numbers:

Jyare Davis, Delaware State: 182nd by SRS, playing in the CAA, 19th ranked conference by SRS -5.01
Lucas Taylor, Georgia State: 215 by SRS, playing in the Sun Belt 17th conference, -3.41 SRS
Doty: Siena: MAAC 25th by SRS -9.98
For reference, I just looked up the BPR for all three of these players:
Davis: 3.07 at Delaware '23-'24; 2.21 at Cuse '24-'25
Taylor: -0.59 at GA State '23-'24; 1.08 at Cuse '24-'25
Doty: 3.35 at Siena '25-'26; TBD at Cuse '26-'27
