Class of 2024 SG Jalil Bethea (PA) Portal to Alabama

I haven't workshopped this take yet but... I think an agency giving a high schooler 7 figures makes me a little uncomfortable compared to boosters giving that high schooler a ton of money. By all means get your money but it just seems like there is a much higher chance it's predatory in nature.

I wonder what a kid like Bethea is signing off on in exchange for a deal like that. When you get money from a collective or however else from a booster(s) it is relatively straightforward. This, not so much.

Interesting times now that all of this is a little more public instead of completely in the shadows.
Alternatively... if the athlete is getting 7 figures, that ain't predatory.

Jalil Bethea is a very good high school player with a lot of potential. He made his decision for whatever reason to play for the University of Miami.

He has a lot of opportunities if he continues to develop.

I‘m moving on from him and this thread. I suggest that we all do instead of questioning why he chose Miami and not us. i assume that Bulldog has insight into the offer and if he wants to share it, great . Otherwise, as stated, I have moved on.
Or people can keep posting if they’d like because it’s a fan board. To each their own.

I wonder how many people cared that Taylor Swift got paid to record music at age 14. Or that Justin Rose got paid for golf at 17.

Dude, it’s just lashing out.

No one here would give a sht if Bethea got paid the same amount of money (or more!) if he took his talents to Syracuse instead of South Beach.
Well said. Bummer about Jalil, but all good. Such is life in recruiting. SU still has two really good 2024 commits, lots in play for 2025, and excited about this coming season.

He chose the money instead of playing a significant role on a team, it is what it is. Wish him nothing but the best though.

I watched some of the Drake game. Drake is legit. Bethea showed some immaturity against some smart vets. No shame in that as a freshman. No guarantee he will live up to the hype but way too soon to be shaming him.

I posted because he may be a prime transfer candidate. He’s their 9th man and they aren’t good. Larranaga is not going to be there forever.

I understand NIL and life changing money and a kid going after it, but as a former ten year resident of Miami it pains me to see Philly kids going from arguably the best grass roots hoops culture in the country to, no argument, the worst.
Not to be confused with "Heat Culture" which I am sure exists. But there is none in the community.

There's no guarantee that he would have done better or flourished here. Some players take a while to make the leap to D1 basketball competition, some just hit a wall after high school and don't live up to expectations, some transfer and excel, and some stay the same or do worse.

I wish Bethea well. He reminds me of Freeman. Talented player with lots of potential but need a lot of fine tuning and growth. Both could be drafted after year one just on potential, but really need at least two years in college doing the work needed to be able to contribute to an NBA team.

They’re 3-3. The veterans aren’t performing. Not a great strategy to play the #5 recruit 12 mpg when you aren’t winning anyway.

If he is "locked in" on a 2 year plan then his minutes in year 1 should not matter. You can learn a lot by sitting and watching. His playing time might gradually increase as the season progresses and with the veterans out of the way next year, he'll have the keys to the car. It's a good plan for guys who are patient and not obsessed with being one and done (and also one good thing about NIL).

His NIL deal was structured over 2 years for a lot of money, but he's not locked in. He can transfer if things go poorly this year. I hope he does.
