So let me get this straight, even though people occasionally get stranded on the thruway in NY (happened last year, 16 hrs I believe), it's okay to make fun of our winters because we have plows and we're prepared for this stuff but we can't laugh about a whole city in a gridlock from 2 inches of snow? It was a fricken joke for crying out loud. Now people are saying "how dare you, people died". We'll guess what, people die here in syracuse in the winter too. The GT fans with the 56-0 response were funny because they were right, they kicked our ass but I can't figure out why this became so serious. Winter in Syracuse sucks, no question. Your absolutely right we have plows, but there are also times when plows won't come out and people still drive through that stuff. you can't honestly tell me that we haven't had conditions that made the road that bad before, cause I wouldn't believe that. It's never perfect conditions, and sometimes it's down right terrible but we get through it. If people can have a laugh about our weather, than I'm going to have a laugh about a city in a gridlock from 2 inches of snow. Sorry if that makes me a bad person.

For you southerners, tips for walking on ice!

I emailed Nick Bromberg at Yahoo Sports and told him he's a dick. Read his blog of Shafers tweets and please feel free to do the same. I grew up in Rome, now live in Richmond, Va. This town was shut down for four days last week, kids out of school, etc, due to 1-3 inches on the ground so, I personally know about hardnosed vs softnosed and Nick didn't need to be a dick.

I can't make this up...the Richmond Times Dispatch actually published a story on how to walk on ice. It's subscriber only but this is the headline:
Tips to avoid slipping on ice
- take small steps and shuffle

Wow this topic is still going? An SU coach hasn't taken this much abuse since JB dissed Greensboro as not being NYC.

Maybe, but there are WAY worse coaches' out there. I kinda like it for now.

I'm sorry, but southern response to cold weather makes it difficult to have much sympathy. I live in MD, and the school was closed one day because the temp dropped to minus 6! Then they realized how ridiculous they were being, and the fact that they would quickly run out of snow days, so when it dropped to minus 3 a few days later, school was miraculously open! Now my son is convinced it's too cold to go to school?!?

I have traveled through every state in these United States, and have had the misfortune of driving through just about every kind of weather. I agree with some posters who say that ice is amongst the most hideous forms, but you are foolish if you think that northerners do not know ice well. News flash, ice storms regularly affect 70+% of the US. It doesn't just happen to you.

The worst ice conditions I have ever driven in, were in Minneapolis, MN.

Atlanta roads

I drive through much worse EVERY morning on my way to work after a snow fall in Auburn -- our city does not believe in plows :)

all day all I heard it was snow and not ice on the roads....the snow combined with traffic made the roads slick is what I had heard.

No offense but everytime there's a blizzard, cold weather up here, many of my southern friends have no issue telling me how wonderfully warm their life is, that they are in 70 degree weather, golfing etc and laughing how stupid people who have to deal with snow, cold are nuts. I bet I'm not alone hearing it from our southern friends. People die here too from winter conditions but most southerners don't think they are being "classless" or "insensitive" when it's directed northward- just funny. We take it as a joke, an old tiring one, but a joke.

We also have ice storms that bring down trees, power lines, even - heck we have roof shovelers so houses don't collapse. So we do know all too well what it's like and we pay taxes through the yazoo to deal with it, but we do. They don't deal with it because their elected officials have decided it's not worth it to them, not because it is unmanageable. So despite yearly storms and timely predictions, they believe that ignoring the road conditions, not purchasing proper equipment, materials etc is worth the safety issues for their residents. Suddenly they don't have a sense of humor about snow, ice. ;) Hope everyone made it home safe and sound but don't suddenly lose your regional humor about winter just because you're now the victim.

I moved to Richmond in July. This is my first "winter" down here and have already pissed off a lot of people with my comparisons and jokes.

Look! Syracuse football finally made headlines! lol

Instead of blaming the guy who's stating the obvious (albeit in a joking manner), why aren't your reporters writing articles about how your region can't handle 2 inches of snow? Your region turned a nothing weather event into a near disaster. Do better next time, South.

IDK. What's the cost of being unprepared?

They had another ice storm of the decade in 2011 that also shut down the city and state officials promised to never be caught unprepared again. Instead again they had no plans, were totally unprepared despite early predictions and didn't close schools/government offices nor even staggered closings to prevent the preventable. If officials have decided it's not worth their while to salt then plow the roads, then they have to accept the accountability that goes with the decision that affected public safety as a result. If Atlanta residents want to turn a blind eye to the fact that their average low temp in december, January is 36 and 34 respectively, then accept the reality that the odds of winning their roulette wheel of chance with mother nature will always run out.

I fear that too. Use it to stay relevant and stay connected. But thicken your skin and don't get into p!ssing matches.

As for Atlanta, from the bits and pieces I've heard, they knew the storm was coming and didn't really shut down the city until noon, after everyone had already shown up at work. If I were a city official in Atlanta, I'd try to deflect attention too.
