shafer twatter

yes it did. i made a joke about it to one of my cousins down there and she went ballistic.

how big are these districts that kids were stranded over night. 10 miles from home?
you couldn't get down the block. i was joking about it midday yesterday...and then i proceeded to spend 7 hours driving 12 miles, and then having to dump my car in a lot 2 miles from home and stay with a friend (that i was lucky to have 1/2 mile from where i left the car). it was bad. we're real sensitive because it impacted all of us. tweet was funny. in retrospect, in poor taste...but not intentionally.

I don't think they can even imagine what winter in Syracuse is like. Not a day or two - 4-5 months.

There's this assumption that because we have plows and salt everything is cake.
relatively speaking, it's the best molten chocolate cake with gold leaf. with a bit of effort, storms in syracuse are made to be manageable for the population. not so here in atlanta. this is my third ice storm here (by far the worst) and it's a completely unmanageable, no-chance-of-winning situation.

I get it. I was stranded at the Atlanta airport a couple of times due to ice and snow.

The same weather here is mitigated by equipment - but when it's bad here - plows or no, it's a nightmare usually involving a couple feet of snow on top of ice.

equipment and knowledge of what to do with the roads. another inch of snow might have actually given traction. there's also the whole point of 5 million people in the metro area versus the syr metro area. people spend an hour+ to drive 15-20 miles everyday when the weather is perfect and the crowd is dispersed normally. there's nothing comparable to this scenario in cny. there's no value in comparing.

I concede the difference in population point. Sheer numbers creates a ton more havoc. Plus the % of idiots goes up too ;).

Most likely.

Official social media content needs to be provided by a communications professional, not some insensitive kid trying to be cute.
I'm almost positive it's Shafer tweeting. It's not consistent enough for it to be someone else.

wait till those rednecks find out hcss ordered the ottoman empire to use its second hand weather machine just for snits and giggles- this is all part of a sinister master plan

Hey, no harm meant to those affected by the storm #BleedOrange

Apology offered now let's see if those southern twit..erers can be gracious and accept it.

And I have lived in the south for decades through snowstorms and icestorms. The problem with the debacle in Georgia was due to incompetent politicians. They had ample warning a storm was coming and chose not to close the school and government offices and warn folks to stay home. Shame on them. Also you don't have to have plows... that's what they use road graders for in the south in the winter.

Lol. I found it funny. Don't see us up North (including northern us) shut down

I know I'm softer nosed living here in the south for the last 15 years. Snow is ok once a year in my book now.
I love this response. Stuff that's true shouldn't be insulting. The South doesn't handle the cold, snow and ice as well as the North. They're not equipped for it or used to it, so they're softnosed Southerners compared to hardnosed Northerners when it comes to the weather. Big deal.

There are certainly difficult things Southerners are used to and that makes them hardnosed in comparison to Northerners that don't handle those things as well. No need to get upset about it.

I live in Utah now. Traffic is more or less non-existent. Do I still complain about it? Yes. Do my friends from LA make fun of me for it? Yes. Doesn't really matter though. I can't handle traffic anymore. Utah's made me soft. No need to get upset if someone else recognizes it.

For sure. I saw a spider the size of my hand down south. I'm soft-nosed when it comes to giant arachnids.

It's also okay for my southern friends to kill me for it.

Loosen up, south. Life's too cold to not enjoy a joke (too soon?)...

Twitter is such an echo chamber. I guarantee you that the number of people exposed to this controversy today couldn't fill the Dome.

yeah it's a little soon, no offense. most people are strung out emotionally and physically after waiting up all night worrying about their families, friends, co-workers, etc, or up all night helping people out.
everyone is on edge down here, and as a result, everyone is pointing the blame at each other (or at least to schools, the mayor, the governor, DOT, etc).

as i said in a different post, i don't even really care for the comment either. i would say it is the equivalent of the blizzard of 93 happening to syracuse while everyone is at work. plus, we already suck at commuting to/from work in atlanta, with the rain, sun, you name it.

Look, we deal with disruptive and dangerous storms more than once a winter - people die, worry about loved ones, etc. It's reality. And we deal with it. When someone (I mean every announcer to ever call a game) jokes about snow, is it disrespectful of the lives lost, property damaged, etc? Yes. It rolls off - because it's reality living here. If anyone truly understands what you're dealing with it's us. It was a sarcastic joke. The responses to his apology are worse than what he said...

I lived in Syracuse for the majority of my life. I've driven through many snowstorms. I know you think you know what we, down in Atlanta, are dealing with, but I have a tough time comparing it to anything I experienced in Syracuse.

When you guys are reading about the person who was trapped on the highway for 4+ hours, it's not just an example of one person the media found to do a story on, it is what most people experienced yesterday, and i'm not exaggerating.

Spot on

Guess its ok to make fun of us for our massive winters every broadcast

Extreme weather is everywhere. My car was totaled on 81 because I hit an 18 wheeler due to the fact I couldn't see the front of my car. It's tough and bad and inconvenient. But, you don't think it's just a case of folks being a tad too sensitive about a joke?

No, and I'm not here to argue with you, I know there are incidents everywhere. As I said, it's a function of people being strung out from the majority of the population sitting in a car for 4+ hours with no food, water, etc, and a city (everyone in Atlanta) that is embarrassed after what happened that was mostly caused by people underestimating the storm, and thus do not want to listen to people say "we experience this everyday"

I love that people got so offended by it that seemingly intelligent journalists replied with:

"OH YEAH! Georgia Tech beat you in a football game!"

Embarrassing.
