Siena Basketball: GMAC / Blackwell / AO

First off watch their games and his coaching, 2nd Siena is 157 in Def efficiency in 2024-25, last year they were 303rd.. Guess who is 303 this year?

Siena Off Efficiency - last year 359 - this year 199.. Is that not coaching
It sure as hell is.
Again, watch one of their games if you get a chance.
The effort and, yes defensive effort, is light years ahead of us.
And it should not be.

With the exception of Doty, our team talent overall is much better than Siena.

Agree with the improvement GMAC has brought to Siena. That’s a big one year jump. I have only watched a few games but the effort is night and day different from Cuse

This is all fantastic. GMac is better than Red is your point?

My point is 175th in defensive rating is not "tight D".

I am on the record that Gmac's team looks much better coached than ours.

I am also a big fan of Doty - but he would not be the most talented player on our team, and isn't the most talented player on Siena's team. He is a very good Frosh in the MAAC without a doubt.

The numbers are all relative to the talent you have. If the talent you have should be 350th in the country in defense and your team is 175, you have done a good job. If on the other hand, your talent should be top ten and you are 175, not a good job.
We were preseason top 70 on most metric sites. We’re around the 120 mark right now

Dear lord if I was in charge I would ban all talk of gmac for the next 5 years. If in 5 years he has continued to make Sienna better, started coaching at a higher level school, and made that school better too, then maybe we can act like he is a possibility as head coach of Cuse. Until then... these talks just make my blood pressure skyrocket.

Sienna?

It seems like you could be satisfied seeing that an alum is doing a pretty respectable job in his first year. Not sure why any mention of him should be banned, or why it makes you so upset.

I guess that I am so used to how bad our defense is, Siena's just seems so much better in comparison.
Which apparently the numbers prove.

Sorry, the numbers I posted were incorrect.

If you look at KenPom,
Syracuse's AdjDefensive Rating = 173
Siena's AdjDefensive Rating = 231

Syracuse's defense is better than Siena's per the numbers. I can't comment on "tighteness" or eye tests. Those are opinions.

Doty, at worst, would have the Kyle Cuffe role.
One thing that happened in a recent game against Mount St Marys.
On the opening play, a Mount St Marys player knocked Doty to the ground. Players and the head coach cheered. Player was given a flagrant foul.
The head coach later admitted that he told his team to show Doty immediately that he wouldnt be able to rebound against them and thought it was great he knocked him down.
It didnt work - Doty went on to have a big game.
MAAC league is now looking into possibly sanctioning Mount St Marys.

Now, obviously, this is not what anyone would want to see.
Talk about poor sportsmanship. And it is a catholic school.

Because people are talking like he is actually in the conversation to replace Autry in the near future. If they were just complimenting his season that would be completely 100% fine. But people are here arguing that he could actually replace Autry and getting a bunch of likes suggesting it. If he was John Smith the 1st year coach at Eastern Southwestern Carolina taking some efficiency numbers from 300 to the high 100s, then nobody would have him on their radar, and they would be insulted if someone suggested he has done enough to be trusted with the cuse job in the near future.

We can show love and support for gmac starting his head coaching career, but if we are actually talking about replacing Autry in the near future, he should be treated like the complete nobody that he is, compared to other candidates. Nobody whose only head coaching experience is 1-2 years at Siena*** should anywhere close to the conversation.

I agree with you on this.

If they go on a run in their tournament this year and do well next year, brace yourself. That said, I doubt JW keeps it in the family again with the new HC search next year unless something totally crazy happens.

I don't this it's JW that you have to worry about in that regard.

To be clear, I freaking love Gmac and he was my hero growing up, but we gotta aim much higher with our next coach.

I don't think that anyone is talking about him for the "near" future. Maybe some time in the future if he does well. I think posters are more commenting, while it really wasn't "feasible", they think he should be the Syracuse coach now and the last 2 seasons. I think there's a segment of SU fans who would be more likely to open their wallet for NIL and donation money if he were the coach. And I say that solely based on how beloved a player he was at Syracuse.

I hope you can lower your blood pressure. This is just comments on a fan board, not life.

I love this thread -something positive to read while suffering through SU's problems this season.
IDK if GMac will ever coach at SU -just happy for his success so far. See no reason to ban that discussion.

I'm being dramatic. Complimenting his season is fine. Suggesting he could be a candidate for our next coach as soon as next year is completely ridiculous IMO. We have to aim higher than another guy from JB's bench who is yet to fully prove himself.

Well, ironically, this nobody has more head coaching experience now than when Red was hired.

At any rate, nobody thinks, including myself, that Gerry will be hired to replace Red in the near term.
If the Red experiment fails, I would hope they pull out the checkbook and do a national search.
Now, I hope frankly that Gerry would be in the conversation say 5 years from now if we still need a head coach and if Gerry continues to improve as a head coach.

But I wont apologize for wishing at the time that Gerry was hired instead of Red.
I fervently believe that our program would be in a much better place now.
But that ship has sailed and the SS McNamara wont be docking in Syracuse again for at least 5, maybe 10 years. Assuming there is still mutual interest then.

But I enjoy watching Siena play, the effort, the never say die attitude. They are fun to watch.
It is in sharp contrast to watching SU most of this year which has been as entertaining as watching paint dry, or thinking they are finally going to turn the corner only to have the ball pulled away like Lucy in the old Peanuts cartoons.
