Siena Basketball: GMAC / Blackwell / AO

Peter Carey is a defensive presence out there tonight. Plus he's got a beard now...so watch out, Grizzly Adams.
Carey with 3 blocks already.
The beard is kind of shocking, and he seems to have a bit more beef on him.
Definitely not playing tentatively like he did at SU.
Good job Arinze!

Doty 5 rebounds, a steal and 6 points on perfect shooting.
Just won MAAC rookie of the week for the third time.
Again, why didn’t we take this kid?
He was on GMACs radar as soon as he was hired.
So GMAC must have been recruiting him at some point?
Watch this kid - would definitely be starting for us now.

He never stops. Limitless energy and he runs the top of the 1×2x2 full court press. He's fun to watch.

This is Paulus’s 6th year at Niagara with only one year over .500 (16-15). Wonder if he’s on the hot seat at all? Imagine they are having big issues with NIL but he’s been there 6 seasons. Siena lost to Niagara by 1 early this season.

As I was watching tonight's game, I was thinking about the different paths that Greg and Gerry have taken to get to where they are. Both are relatively young, Gerry is 41 and Greg is 38, although I would have guessed the age gap was more.

Yes, Paulus has struggled, but they have beat Siena and won at 1st place Quinnipiac. I'm not sure if Niagara would ever force Greg out, but down the road sometime, he could be possibly a nice addition to the Syracuse staff. Just not as head coach.

Paulus was an assistant to Patrick Beilein at Niagara and was a continuity hire when Beilein had his issues at Niagara resigning right before the season started never even coaching a game. Very unusual path for Paulus.

In retrospect, was forcing Carey out , a center with 3 years remaining and an intriguing prospect and instead keeping McLeod, with 1 year remaining, another evaluation error by Autry?
He had 2 points and three block shots last night with ZERO rebounds. After reading these posts, I thought he must have had a double-double last night.

Like it or not, GMAC has netted Siena a 10-win improvement this year. BUT, I think our next coach should be someone who can bring a few players from their last job. We might want to hire someone who is one level below us conference-wise, rather than several. Like what Indiana did with football... their coach brought a bunch of players from James Madison. And it worked pretty well.

LOL. We would be lucky if we could get his frosh Doty!

Sigh - GMAC is no dummy and he has feelings.
He was passed over by JW even though JB wanted him as his successor.
Go back to the beginning of this thread to see the discussions on that.
He is doing well at Siena. His players like him, the fans love him, he has built a good culture and he has an easier path to the NCAAs than we currently do.
And he wants to get back to the NCAA tournament, he has made that clear in interviews.

Like us, he has to win the conference tournament to get in.
Unlike us, he has a legitimate shot to do it.
Marist is first in the league, he lost by a point to them on a buzzer beater.
Quin is second in the league, he beat them by 9 points 2 weeks ago.
The only other team above him in the league that he has not beaten, he only lost to by 6.
I am not predicting they will win the tournament, but they have a decent shot to do it.
We have no shot to win the ACC tournament, we might not even make the tournament.

I love GMAC, as I think most of us on this board do.
I have started watching Siena because their games are really entertaining, unlike the sludge SU games have become.
But he will not be our head coach any time in the near future.
He could win MAAC coach of the year, win the tournament and get to the NCAA tournament (this year or a future) and JW wont even give him a sniff.
And I dont think GMAC would have interest right now.
Why should he want to take over this dumpster fire? And face criticism for replacing Red? And face criticism for being another JB family member?
Too much pressure, too much noise for little reward. Our team is really bad right now.

JW wont replace Red with GMAC, as that would admit he screwed up on the Red hiring.
God forbid that JB actually knew who would be the better head coach.

Maybe in 5 years if GMAC does as well as I believe he will, there will be a serious discussion.
Not before then though.

Until then, we suffer thru next year which will probably be more of the same.
And then do a national search in another year.

I will attend SU games out of duty.
I will watch Siena games on ESPN Plus for enjoyment.

GMac is coaching in a very good conference to become a head coach at a power conference if successful at Siena. Many of the Big East coaches like Pitino, Shaheen Halloway, Ed Cooley, Kevin Willard etc stepped up from the MAAC particularly to head coaching jobs in the Big East lately. There are many other examples like our own Louie Orr , Rob Lanier, Paul Hewitt, Fran McCaffrey and Mike Deane who all went from Siena to P5 coaching jobs.

Rob Lanier was fired from Siena after four years. It took him 10 years as an assistant (mostly following Rick Barnes) before he got another head coaching gig. He got a head coaching job despite his bad performance at Siena.

Bottom line is I will always hope the best for GMAC and will support his team.
i do believe that one day he will be our head coach, it just won’t be for awhile until he proves himself elsewhere.

I also think if he proves himself a good, or maybe a very good coach elsewhere,
there won’t be a dry eye in the house when he finally takes the reins here.
