Siena Basketball: GMAC / Blackwell / AO

Do people feel more affection for Hakim Warrick than Derrick Coleman or John Wallace?
I think there is an affection for all the key guys on the championship team. Whether there is more for him than Derrick or John, I'm not sure. But I know where you were going with your comment and there's usually something to it, but I don't agree in this case.

But we all know you're a college professor and you're the smartest guy in the room and desperate to show it at every opportunity, so I'm sure you're right.
I’m sincerely hurt by that because I like you.

LOL. We would be lucky if we could get his frosh Doty!

Sigh - GMAC is no dummy and he has feelings.
He was passed over by JW even though JB wanted him as his successor.
Go back to the beginning of this thread to see the discussions on that.
He is doing well at Siena. His players like him, the fans love him, he has built a good culture and he has an easier path to the NCAAs than we currently do.
And he wants to get back to the NCAA tournament, he has made that clear in interviews.

Like us, he has to win the conference tournament to get in.
Unlike us, he has a legitimate shot to do it.
Marist is first in the league, he lost by a point to them on a buzzer beater.
Quin is second in the league, he beat them by 9 points 2 weeks ago.
The only other team above him in the league that he has not beaten, he only lost to by 6.
I am not predicting they will win the tournament, but they have a decent shot to do it.
We have no shot to win the ACC tournament, we might not even make the tournament.

I love GMAC, as I think most of us on this board do.
I have started watching Siena because their games are really entertaining, unlike the sludge SU games have become.
But he will not be our head coach any time in the near future.
He could win MAAC coach of the year, win the tournament and get to the NCAA tournament (this year or a future) and JW wont even give him a sniff.
And I dont think GMAC would have interest right now.
Why should he want to take over this dumpster fire? And face criticism for replacing Red? And face criticism for being another JB family member?
Too much pressure, too much noise for little reward. Our team is really bad right now.

JW wont replace Red with GMAC, as that would admit he screwed up on the Red hiring.
God forbid that JB actually knew who would be the better head coach.

Maybe in 5 years if GMAC does as well as I believe he will, there will be a serious discussion.
Not before then though.

Until then, we suffer thru next year which will probably be more of the same.
And then do a national search in another year.

I will attend SU games out of duty.
I will watch Siena games on ESPN Plus for enjoyment.
Good for G. I wish that he was a better recruiter for SU. He's got more bridesmaids dresses than carter's got pills. I hope be crushes it and lands a great job but if Red fails we need to move on. Move away from JBs tree.

GMac is coaching in a very good conference to become a head coach at a power conference if successful at Siena. Many of the Big East coaches like Pitino, Shaheen Halloway, Ed Cooley, Kevin Willard etc stepped up from the MAAC particularly to head coaching jobs in the Big East lately. There are many other examples like our own Louie Orr , Rob Lanier, Paul Hewitt, Fran McCaffrey and Mike Deane who all went from Siena to P5 coaching jobs.
Mike Deane was a helluva point guard.

Other than recency, I don’t know why people would feel more affection for GMac than Autry.
Are you joking?
National championship, Big East tournament miracle run his senior year, assistant coach for 15 years. Number retired.
Only left the program for 3 years. Frankly next to JB, he is mister Orange.
Red left for 17 years to play professionally and coach elsewhere.
Yes , he was a good player for us but the level of affection isn’t even close.
JMO.

Was he that bad though? He was Maliqs recruiter.
None of us will ever know if he identified potential recruits and was overruled.
Diamond in the rough players perhaps.
Look at Doty. That kid will probably get MAAC rookie of the year and we didn’t want him.
But GMAC scooped him up as soon as he got his head coaching gig.
Instead we let a scholarship go to waste, not to menation misses on portal acquisitions.

We will get to see first hand how good a recruiter he is by who he brings in and how they do.

We should hire Greg Paulus!

It just seems like maybe we're missing something.

Maybe.

But what?

Bad loss for Siena against Canisius today 93-88. Gave up 61 points in the second half to a now 3 win team.
Actually it was Siena who outscored Canisius 61-56 in the 2nd half, but some of their points came after the game was decided.

This was arguably Siena's worst game of the year, after their best game of the year.

Canisius jumped out to a 17 point lead in the 1st half, and Siena got it back down to 10 at halftime. After the half, Canisus went back up to 17 until Siena could chisel away. But then they went back up by 19 after a six point possession, due to a foul, a technical and a basket. With four minutes to go, Siena was still down by 16.

In the 1st half, Siena played this terrible defense where the automatically switched on every defensive possession when one of Canisius players set a pick. They switched back to a conventional pressing defense in the 2nd half, and as good as the defense was Friday against Niagara, Nothing worked against last place Canisius.

Canisius, on defense, played that clutching and grabbing defense that Syracuse always had problems with against Louisville and Ohio State. Siena had a huge height advantage but couldn't take advantage of it.

Here is the T-U article on the game.

Woof. Thanks for being able to provide the post mortem!

Definitely their worst game of the season.
Hopefully this will be a teaching moment for Gerry.
I dont think I have ever seen so many consecutive turnovers in the first half.
So often teams come out from a blow out win and play sloppy and lackadasical.
That was the case here.
And that technical in the second half when the freshman lost his composure and shoved a Canisius player.
The camera showed Gerry screaming at him in the huddle. I don't think I ever have seen him so upset.
They lost 6 points on that possession.

Still with 4 minutes to go they were down 16 and ended up only losing by 5.
So, the fight was there.

Fulton’s Gavin Doty and his sensational rookie season at Siena: ‘What he does is not normal’

Big article on Syracuse.com this morning on Siena's Gavin Doty. As has been said in this thread Gerry had his eye on him for awhile. Interesting that Syracuse.com would have basketball reporter Donna Ditota write another long piece on the Siena basketball program. This is an excellent article for anyone who has access to it. It ends with this paragraph:

“He’s going to have opportunities, but he knows he has a great opportunity here with people who love him,” McNamara said. “He’s obviously going to have a lot of people who are going to try to get to him and he’s going to have decisions to make. Those are decisions, when the time comes, we’ll sit down and talk about. But I know he’s happy here and we love having him here.”

Hard to believe with the crap team SU has that we didn't even give this kid a sniff.
Will probably win MAAC rookie of the year - leads the league with 4 MAAC rookie of the week awards.
It isn't like SU was unaware of him - GMAC had been tracking him for years.
And I believe we had an extra scholarship available.

One more reason why I have no faith in Red.
Guy cant coach and guy cant evaluate talent.

At this point you're making up reasons to disparage Red. It's weird.

I defer to you as I haven't watched as much Siena as you have. Is he really a Power 4 level player or are we looking at someone like Jyare or Carlos when they move up to this level?

BTW, Syr MLAX fans: the article says he plays every possession to win that possession. And he played lacrosse in high school. We could use some of that determination on our MLAX team.

it's to be determined. Anyone who tells you that he would be as impacful as he has been, is blowing smoke. Just look at the schools that offered him. He was on nobody's radar. But he's worked hard and now is a much better player.

If he develops into a P4/P5 player, he'll get looks.
