What Gerry said in that press conference is why I thought he would be a better coach than Red. Talking about what he wants and expects in a player. And actually following thru,
As for Doty, I believe he would perform better than either of our current guards.
And most importantly, he is a leader and leads the team
Please tell me who is the leader on our team?

Oh please. You've been like a teenage girl at a Taylor Swift concert when it comes to Gerry and it has everything to do with where he went to school. Don't act like we're stupid by pretending you're an objective observer after reading years of your posts.

But as far as Gerry, he's done a really nice job at Siena. I echo a lot of Jake's thoughts. Definite upgrade as far as a strategic coach over Red but be interesting to see if he can get the players at this level.

I'm starting to come around on Doty being better for a team that wants to win over any guard we have. Might not score as easily but would certainly make up for it in effort plays. I'd be interested how his pacing would work against quicker talent.

He works a mismatch in the post better than any player we have had in a while.
 
It will be especially interesting if he takes Siena back to the NCAAT after only 2 years there after taking over a 4 win program.
I just think GMAC has the intangibles that really good coaches need.
As for recruiting, he brought in Doty and Folefac and has a verbal commitment from a top 10 point guard who would be the highest rated recruit in Sienas history..

I always thought GMACs personality and his ability to point to his accomplishments as a player would go a long way in recruiting as a head coach when he basically could call the shots.
Seriously, he won a national championship with Carmelo and had a pretty storied career right up to the final Big East Tournament.

He literally isn't asking his team to do anymore than he did as a player.
He can walk the walk so to speak. I think that still resonates with young players.
He isn't just talking a bunch of hot air.

And he did it with hard work and a never surrender attitude.

Interesting in that he could be a good coach somewhere down the line. Not interesting in that he should be taking Red's job next year...right??
 
Yes Gerry would be my choice as coach, but not for his legendary status as Cuse Player and need to keep in family. I do watch a lot hoops, prob too much.. Are there possibly better up and coming coahes.. maybe?

1. I am sure I don't want an older coach or a retread hire.. sorry Hop, Mack, Matta, Pitino, Groce. Yu get my drift
2. The Cuse thing. We have a Unicorn of a program with a Coach that lasted 40+ years and won with his High IQ and lets be honest a system gimic in the zone that he mastered.. Yeah we had players, but its like the Military academies and their option FB. We won a lot of games cause there are alot of bad coaches who couldnt figure out the zone. Syracuse is a small private University in wintery Central NY .. With all that said, we could use a coach that knows how Cuse ticks and what can make it successful
3. I have said this before Gerry is not JB and def not Red.. He is his own ID... He cannot be compared to other Cuse players coaching cause he has done what no other has .. Won a title at Syracuse and was a huge part of that. Yes he knows about winning and his competitive drive is off the charts

Finally I am going tp make a comparison that isnt fully parallel but take a look at Todd Goldens journey, yeah the current National title coach at Florida.. He didnt have a major resume before he got to FL.. He spent 2 years assistant at Auburn when they were bad.. He had a bad 2nd year at San Fran in WCC and then got to tourney in 3rd year... Not alot there but they just saw what he was gonna be and now is

It was definitely the suit last night that helped, but GMAC just had big time coach aura. Seriously my biggest concern about GMAC is going through what we are experiencing with Red, which I don’t think it will happen. But does GMAC has shown enough evidence to prove that it can’t happen.

I watched a good portion of the game and I tend to agree. But, why are they playing harder? Is it because they are motivated by GMAC/coaching staff? Is it because they are competitive in their conference and realize they have something to play for in a potential NCAA tourney berth, and finishing near the top of conference makes that road easier? Is it because they are a lower level D1 school and want to get paid bigger bucks at a P4 school? Are they just more motivated in general? There are a lot of factors at play.

All that said, if you can't get motivated to play a sport at a high level, then what the heck are you doing out there?!
 
Hopefully more people on this board will take a look at Siena's future games.
Sadly, those might be the only local meaningful games till the NCAAT unless we see an upward tick from SU.
For those who can stream ESPN plus, all their games are there.
Next one is at St Peters this Saturday, right after the SU game.

To echo another poster, amazing what a job Arinze has done with their big men.
I have never understood why SU has had only guards as coaches for years.
Seems to me that a really successful big man coach would be a big man himself, but that is just me.

I think a lot of it is the leadership on the team.
You have a coach who never lets up on what he expects and makes sure they know it.
He would never put up with lack of effort, he would sit those players on the bench.

Secondly, he has a true leader on the team in Doty. That kid leads by example with his effort and never give up attitude. He doesn't have the shooting talent of Gerry but he ticks a lot of the other boxes.
Gerry said before he coached a game last year that what drew him to Doty was his leadership and that he could see him developing into the team leader. He said his team would need that especially.

I think for Gerry, the intangibles are as important as the raw talent.

SU literally has no leader on this team. It should be JJ but it isn't - just isn't his style and temperament.
It is often the senior point guard - but Nate is having a hard enough time doing his job let alone lead.
He is not Sherman Douglas - that is for sure.
Donnie, for whatever reason, doesn't seem willing to do it either.

They had the exact same problem last year and it has not improved.

And Red certainly does not run his team with DART in mind.
His comment in a press conference that only Sadiq White was trying is as much of an indictment of the coach as the player.
