Siena Basketball: GMAC / Blackwell / AO

My apologies. I thought he was working with Folefac. I gathered from Gerrys press conference that the plan is to ramp up Mulveys minutes. Tasman was fantastic earlier this year - not sure what his injury is.

I agree, Gerry takes what he has and finds a way to make it work.
No problem both are probably working with Folefac since he has to play inside and as one of their bigs. Hoping for Siena’s sake that Mulvey can be effective and play more minutes as a 7 footer. Goodrick supposedly has shoulder issues.

I am happy to see Gerry doing well and finding some success. I still don't want him as our next coach and would rather see new "blood " into the program. This isn't personal, it's business and he just doesn't have enough head coaching experience and more importantly a sustained winning resume in my opinion. Syracuse doesn't have the luxury to miss on this next hire.

I love Arinze but the 2 big men on Siena have been hit with injuries, really limiting their court time and effectiveness. Peter Carey left before this year, his career riddled with injuries. So Siena recruited two transfer portal big men, Riley Mulvey and Tasman Goodrick. Unfortunately like Carey both have been hit during the season with injuries that have really limited their playing time and impact for the team. Against Iona last night only the 7 foot grad student Mulvey played for 17 minutes, scoring 2 points, 0 rebounds and 3 assists. He was out of the lineup totally for 9 games with a very serious concussion and plays limited minutes with no starts. Tasman Goodrick 6’10” junior, has been out of the lineup for most of the season. He didn’t play at all against Iona and has played in only 9 games. It’s very unfortunate for Siena because he appears to be a very good player who hasn’t been in a game since 12/17th. I heard he has shoulder issues. Their next tallest player Tajae Jones has also been riddled with injuries playing only 3 games this season all in November.

Unfortunately all their big men have been hit with serious injuries. It impresses me even more, the job that GMac and staff has done with the number of serious injuries on this team and how he’s adjusted his lineups to continue to compete and win. Sophomore Gavin Doty, freshman Francis Folefac and senior guard Brendan Coyle all 6’7” are left as their big men. Another 6’7” player Reid Ducharme, a guard, has been out all season too. Looking forward to seeing the impact Arinze has on the development of their big men when healthy. He’s probably helping with the forwards with Ryan Blackwell and has done a good job assisting their development.
Folefac was more than good enough last night. The other Frosh they have who hit some 3s is also good

Mulvey was a Big 10 player?

We just had a board insider (I forgot who) pretty much claim GMac is a jerk and all about Gerry about a week ago. Is this well known?

That was a great game last night. I also found myself focused in on the game due to seeing GMac coaching. Really highlights the contrast to how invested and connected I felt as a fan to past ‘Cuse team/players versus the last few years.

I’ve been in the camp that hopes we hire a more proven, experienced coach, but I think I felt a case of FOMO watching GMac. If he is the real deal, I really hope the stars align someday and he comes back to coach at ‘Cuse.

Oh I 100% agree. I also look at it this way.

Let’s say Gmac finished 2nd in his conference this year and 23 wins. If you just put Autry where Gmac is, same players, Siena, same conference, schedule…same everything. What do you think the results would be?

Honestly I think he finishes towards the bottom of the conference and wins maybe 15 games. Autry coaching wise could barely beat the Sienas last year….we have way more talent than those teams this year and still had a couple close calls. Now imagine giving Autry Siena talent where coaching, X’s and O’s is even more that important. Dude would not win more than 12-15 games a year. I genuinely believe that

I don't recall reading that post.
But I am sure there are some people out there who thinks he is a jerk.
I don't think so and I don't know of anyone else who thinks so.
That being said, As Boeheim said in an earlier interview, everybody isn't going to like you.

The MAAC is a one bid league, and unless Siena wins the Tourney, it won't be them.

of course they're a 1 bid league. don't win the tournament you're praying for the nit. these games have been important for positioning in the tournament. first 2 seeds get byes and of course the higher you finish the easier the road (theoretically).

not my experiences with him. I'd say he's a confident young man.

I completely agree.
On paper, Red should have been much better than he is.
And as I said earlier, I think he will always be a very good assistant and recruiter.
He just cant run the whole thing and design his own offense and defense.
There is no shame in that, there are a lot of really good assistants out there who also cant do it.

Whatever truly differentiates a good head coach from a good assistant, Red seems to lack that secret ingredient.
Gerry would appear at this time to have it.

I will preface by saying I didn’t pay close attn to the game until the end. But, contrary to what a poster said about Welsh praising Gerry’s end of game coaching, I thought it was lazy. It was iso ball, the last few possessions for sure. And we know damn well what that looks like. They got lucky that it worked out. That being said, I did see them run a few things earlier.

And would be about the 3 millionth college coach to be confident / have an ego a bit.

I have two friends that coached college sports. Love them to death. Great people. They will never be missing confidence and I mean that in the most loving way possible.

You need it.

It's when it becomes toxic is it bad, but otherwise I think a good coach should have it.

Not to single you out because it's a big club, but the sweeping generalization that "iso ball" is lazy, ineffective, waste of time is... misguided. When it is used to create mismatches, isolate poor defenders, get to the foul line, or to create high efficiency shots for players based on analytics it can be very effective, especially during end of game/end of clock situations. Most good coaches have it in the arsenal.

Do a national search. If GMac is a candidate and can beat out the other candidates, great.

At least he'll have won it on merit.

In the other thread there is worry about the credibility of the search. if we have to worry about that with this search, we may as well give up basketball.

I would like to think of myself as someone that isn't cynical. I have faith that the school knows just how important this next hire is and it should be an exhaustive search with a fierce competition for getting the right person in.

No, I understand and that’s fair to say. But, I saw at least 3 possessions of this in a row at the end. You’d like to see a little something different. It also didn’t appear to be overly orchestrated. As Gerry just seemed to be waving guys away after a bunch of standing around.

Look at Nate Oats. Never misses an opportunity to say what’s on his mind. I think we’d take him in a second.

We can take it to the bank that the school is acutely aware of how important this hire will be.
