Siena Basketball: GMAC / Blackwell / AO

What I love about Doty is not only how he produces on the court, but what a leader he is for his teammates.
I dont know 100% that Doty could be a starter for SU.
But I know he could have been a desperately needed leader.

Not for nothing, whoever comes in, they need to bring in someone who can not only produce but lead his teammates. SU has not had that in years.

Chandler’s eligibility issue might have something to do with this being his 7th year playing college basketball.Just saying!
Chandler’s paperwork to the NCAA was sent in, but never finalized. The person on his case took a new job and didn’t complete it. As a result, his name won’t show up when NCAA rosters come out. It’s a problem.

Was that new job at SU? Sounds like something this school screw up.

Is that right?

Thinking those resumes are similar is what's truly mind-boggling.

Big fan of GMac. Looks like he could be a great coach.

He's not ready for P4 ball.
The difference between sienna and usf is quite large. I went to the game Siena played against Fairfield. Sat by the bench. Paid a lot of attention to Gerry’s coaching. Love his fire and leadership. It would be a welcome change. Did not love the offensive design. It was better than Red though. And I think he’s going to get better. But not sure he’s ready to take on the SU job. I think he could one day though.

it’s what Red should have done. It’s hard to learn on the job in the ACC.

I will agree that for various reasons GMAC would not be the fit right now at SU.
But TPTB really screwed up picking Red over GMAC three years ago.
Listen to the interview posted on a previous page.
GMAC gets it as far as what he expects from his players and what culture he wanted to build.
Sadly, Red had absolutely no clue how to build a culture and how to get his players to improve.
Thus, the team regresses as the year goes on and the attitude of the players literally goes down the toilet.

And yes, I adore GMAC and think he will be a great SU coach one day.
But Hodgson is the better pick right now.

I didn't initially think we'd end up with Hodgson (by SU's choice), but the more I watch his teams, the more I want that style of play here.

I don't think there is any debate that Gerry handles a lot of the coaching stuff better than Red. The one thing they both seem to be lacking (maybe fine tuning) is installing and teaching an effective offense. To me that is on JB as they spent so much time here, but both guys need to clinic it up on offense in 2026.

Correct, that is why pages ago I said if GMac wants to make it big in college, he needs to find a Murray like Hurley did and let him run the offense and just focus on everything else.

I think he has shown flashes of being a good coach, and I can definitely see a future as a head coach, unlike I can see with Red, but to make that happen, he will need to figure out the offense. He has to find a young, could be very young, offensive guru to come on his staff and run the show on that side of the ball and have GMac focus on defense, fundamentals, game management, and motivation. Then I think there is something real there.

I feel like we say the same stuff over and over again when Gerry gets brought up -- at this point I think theres 97% agreement on the following
1. Hiring Red over Gerry was a mistake
2. Gerry is a promising young coach
3. Gerry needs more seasoning to jump straight into a job like Syracuse
4. In a future world Gerry could be a great coach of our beloved Orange
5. After a decade of irrelevance its time to go outside the SU "family"

I feel like we're all mostly aligned but we keep spinning up conversation about this. Its a message board so obviously have at it but I think we're all largely in agreement. Wishing the best for Gerry. Its just now is not the time.

Well said. Completely agree on all points.
