Siena Basketball: GMAC / Blackwell / AO

GMAC has done a great job, lots of folks keep referencing that poll of coaches saying that Siena is the best job in the MAAC and using that to step on Gerry’s accomplishments. First 20 plus win season in 10 years and one win from their first NCAA bid in 16 years. 3 win team before he got there. Doing this currently with 7 scholarship players available. We can walk and chew gum at the same time: He is not the guy we should hire at this time but he has done a hell of a job at Siena and deserves a lot of credit

They have played Merrimack twice this year.
Lost to them by 4 at home and then lost to them at Merrimack in overtime.
So, the game should be very competitive.
As JB used to say, it is hard to beat the same team 3 times in one year.

Gerry also seems to know how to identify and recruit freshman talent.
Doty was rejected by Red but was on the all rookie team last year and first team all MAAC this year.
Second in player of the year voting.
Francis Folefac is on the all rookie team this year.
And Gerry has signed Ryan Moesch for next year, a four star point guard ranked 14th PG in the country by 247 sports.
Supposedly the highest ranked recruit in Siena history.

That is an awful good core for next year - imagine the teams current success will do wonders for interest in the transfer portal for Siena.

Hopefully, AW will step up again to fund the NIL for Doty - and perhaps Folefac and Moesch as well.

Shoats has been very good in the tournament to help Doty who is consistently better than good. The Frosh big and the other big who usually is a stiff (IMHO) have been solid as well. Merrimac has not looked great in the tourney but the zone is tough - Gerry said it at the half yesterday and it's basketball 101 - if they make shots they got a chance.

The league just reupped with AC but that tournament was a lot better, in terms of energy, in Albany.

Shoats and Doty are definitely the leaders on the team.
I’ve been impressed by the role players on the team like Riley Mulvey, their center. The only games he has started have been in the conference tournament so 3 starts this year and only because of roster injury and ineligibility. Before these last 3 games he was averaging just 14 minutes a game. GMac uses him so well and obviously prepared him very well for the next man up philosophy since he’s averaging 33 minutes in the tournament. He’s no offensive star but plays good defense and is a very good facilitator for their offense playing the high post. He’s played a crucial role and is averaging 9 rebounds a game too in the tournament.

Riley was intended originally to have a big role on the team but then he suffered a severe concussion and missed 8 games. I dont think he started playing again until late January. From a sense of caution and being a bit behind, I think Gerry eased him in a bit.
Thank God they have Riley right now, especially with the loss of Chandler.

They lost 4 players to season ending injury, the worst being Tasman Goodrick.
He was their big guy and only played in 9 games. Averaged 10 points a game and 7 rebounds. 6 foot 10 from Sidney Australia. Only a junior so will be back next year.

I think Gerry gets at least a handful of inquiries, but as we have discussed before, is he going to uproot his family for a job which in the long run, may or may not be better than Siena.

Louis Orr got the Seton Hall job after one season at Siena, so you just never know who might come calling. GMac's name has a lot of cache in certain areas of the country.

But, if he does come back, and Weitsman is still helping him, Siena will be a lot better than this year, assuming he finds a suitable replacement for Shoates. Christian Jones has been somewhat of a disappointment and is not physically strong enough to fill Shoates' shoes. Of course, that's one of the reasons that Shoates averages over 36 minutes per game.

What happened to Ducharme? Is he ever going to play again?

I guess its his shoulder. He played 5 games at Xavier, then 25 at Siena (and some good productive minutes) and zero this year.

Gerry will need to fill Brendan Coyle's spot and Reid should be a good fit if healthy.

Sounds very similar to what he showed in the brief playing time he got an Iowa. Unfortunately he was behind Luka Garza so he didn't play much. Glad he is able to finally get some court time though.

Garza was gone by the time he arrived.

You're right. My mistake. Riley's freshman year was when they played with no center with the Murray brothers and then his sophomore year was when they picked up a Rebraca as a transfer center, who took most of the minutes.

Big Shout out to Gerry on PTI tonight won't hurt. Happy Anniverary segment in the last block. 20th anniversary of beating UConn on Day 2 of SU's big run in the Big East Tournament.

If, and it’s a big if, Siena wins a ticket to the NCAA tournament, there will be a lot of shout outs in the national media. With Gerry’s background and the sorry state of Siena basketball for years, it will make a nice human interest story.
Regardless, it is a great accomplishment just to make it to the championship game.
