Signing Day Drama

that's interesting. I'm going to compile a list of all the schools with losing records and see how they recruited against each other.
I don't feel like doing the work, but that would be very interesting to see how schools with records close to us did in terms of ranking, number of 3 stars, etc.

Then you will never be happy.

That's the point. No one is ever happy outside of the top 10. For everyone else - you're trending up or down. We are up - despite a 3-9 season.

There's 60 teams ahead of you Jimmy!! @CoachJim4UM #Buckeyes #Michigan #NationalSigningDay

Wow it's crazy to see that Duke, a team that finished 9-4 with New Years Day bowl hopes finished 1 spot ahead of us in recruiting. Also, Kansas State who was in the Top Ten for a majority of the year finished 6 spots above us. That's promising, right?

just using 24x7 our ranking jumps a large bit by not taking a kicker and LS. its all relative

Wasn't just him, that whole situation and how it was handled was disgusting. Hell, we had one of their alums on this board trying to tell us it was all no big deal.

At least the first two were found guilty.

I just assume covering up a horrific sex crime is part of the job description for the Penn State football coach.

This is a good class. Hopefully they prove all of the naysayers wrong.

Just watch the videos on youtube of our coaches discussing the signees and you can see how ecstatic they are about landing these kids.

For example, here is Timmy Daoust talking about Steve Clark:

Well, that's better than the coaches seeming incredibly depressed when they talk about the class.

Not as good as who thought? I know he's exceeded the expectations of Michigan fans like myself. He had two friggin' weeks to put together a class basically from scratch. The biggest need was a QB and he flipped a 4-star over from Texas, a number of other strong players over at the last minute from other Power-5 schools, and has made the final selection for the top player at 3 positions.

It was only going to be a 15-person class and Michigan has 6 4-stars out of 12 current commits, all covering positions of the greatest need. I'll take that class for the circumstances any day.

Talking to my UM buddy right now and he's less than impressed. Class isn't closed yet but UM missed on Clark, and Jefferson. Have 10 commits of what I read was a possible 18 they could take. I'd be amazed if you don't land Wheatley but stranger things have happened. He's still holding out hope for Iman Marshall as well as some other names on your board that haven't signed anywhere yet. Will be interested to see how it finishes for you.

while that's true all these kids (save 2) were primarily the coach's A List targets. Maybe they weren't the #1 targets at their positions, but they were definitely rated high on the board considering when the offers and commitments were made.

No of course they're not happy. I can't imagine having ALL that space and being turned down by A LOT of kids. They're Michigan after all.

It could have been better with Weber and Clark, but for having literally two weeks after the blackout period, and putting together a class with 6 4-stars by my last count (in a small class of 12 so far), is pretty damn good. I'll take it.

Rankings are heavily skewed toward larger classes so I'm not reading anything into where Michigan finishes. There was only room for 15 when Harbaugh started (I think 18 now), so it wasn't going to be a big class either way.

by my count, as of now, the SEC signed 45 of ESPNs top 100

Fair assessment. I do like your most recent 2 commits and I'm not privvy to what your biggest positions of need are. Perhaps you could elaborate on that?

QB was #1 thru #12 and getting Gentry was a big pick-up. I don't think Shane Morris (you may remember him from not being able to stand up) is the guy (he'll be a junior and will likely go into camp the #1) and while I like Alex Malzone who just arrived on campus (he went to my high school), Gentry is a good pick-up to have options going into next year when there's going to be a new starter. Though some people really like Speight.

RB has depth so Weber in my opinion wasn't critical by any stretch, but would have been nice to have since it was the first head-to-head between Harbaugh and Meyer. The last thing I'd heard thru the grapevine is that he was set to go Michigan and when UofM flipped Higdon from Iowa he took it as Michigan going back on their word. I also understand that Meyer sold him that if he'd been on the team last year that he'd have been splitting carries with Ezekiel... so yeah.

TE was a big need because of Harbaugh's offense so the miss that hurt the most is Clark, though I still think they get Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. which would be solid. WR was filled nicely with Grant Perry (who went to high school with Malzone and was dominant - the two of them lost only 1 game in their 4 years playing together and won 3 state titles) but flipping Van Jefferson from Ole Miss would sure be nice (doesn't sound like that'll happen).

All in all, I'm happy with the class, particularly since most of these guys are going to redshirt. If this was a class of 25, I'd be concerned, but it's a small class, all of his flips came at the expense of other P5 schools, and it was done in two weeks. Can't complain about the misses today when 3 of them are for the #1 recruit at the position - the fact that in two weeks Harbaugh could get UofM to be in the final two for those is pretty good in and of itself. Next year's class should be outstanding.

Rumor has it that we kept sutomcat, cto, rocco and northacuse. Still unsure of OttoinGrotto.

I heard Millhouse flipped to Baylor as he likes to use statistics to justify offensive minded teams that play against phantom defenses!

See you just took Shelton Johnson from FSU.

~and Wheatley as well
