per Zagoria, Barry Rohrssen is joining Mullin's staff at SJU.

Big hire by the Johnnies, IMO

I was thinking St. Johns might try and take the Kentucky route to success. Looks like this might actually be the plan.

If they cant get recruits now with the staff in place they never will

Huge win for SJU. Slice is a great recruiter with top AAU connections. Will be interesting to see how he does though without WWW and his cash machine that was available to UK.

Maybe this is a sign that Cal is bouncing to the NBA. Just a thought.

This could hurt SU in the long run

Slice will own NY/NJ and I think he was the link between NYC players to Pittsburgh

I don't see it, this wont affect his recruiting at all.

It will not affect Kentucky's recruiting at all, I agree. In order for slice to leave though, he had to have Cal's permission - there was no buyout in his contract. Leaving Kentucky as an assistant to go to St. John's as an assistant, even if it's home, is dumb. There has been a lot of talk about Cal going back to the pros (probably Cleveland). Just sayin.

Slice will help SJU as their recruiting has been non-existent in NYC for a long time. IMO will not impact on SU much. The staff rarely if ever recruits NYC. The few NYC players we get have come through out of NYC prep schools after the kids transfer for their last 2 years of HS. We are strong with NJ kids because we have solid connections to that area's AAU programs. SU will always have a huge advantage over SJU in facilities and on-campus living and life style.

St. John's glory days were built on recruiting top city kids who didn't seem to care about playing on some beautiful campus...let alone in a dingy, broken down, depressing city like Syracuse. Mullen, Rohrsen, Abdulmassih...they're not LA Steve Lavin and LA(fayette) Gene Keady. Sounds like they're going back to what worked. And taking nothing away from the Dome which can be a nice little recruiting tool...SJU plays a lot of games in THE arena...MSG.

SJU means business this time.

Major differences this time are that they can no longer pay NYC kids their housing expense while they actually lived at home. Allowing them to legally pocket the money. They had no on campus housing, that allowed them to do that. They now have dorms. The second thing is, this is not the same conference. Most of the top kids are going to want to play in major conferences. They will get some good kids, but I don't think they will be a powerhouse.

At the end of the day... they are still St. Johns. They will never return to the glory days of Louie Carneseca, Mullen, Walter Berry, Wennington et al. It just won't happen.

Please tell me the NYC/NJ recruits that Slice helped Pitt get that Syracuse wanted? All he will do is help SJU with kids but how the hell does this hurt SU long term? Oh no we won't get Chris Taft or Ronald Ramon damn you Slice.

This hire doesn't effect Syracuse very much if at all.

I would think Mullin's hiring is a bigger deal than Slice although its an excellent hire for Mullin IMO. A lot has to happen for ST. John's to become a powerhouse program that is regularly beating out top P5 teams for coveted 5star kids.

SJU just needs to rise into the top 3-4 programs of the BE. I could see that...lots of talent in NYC. A rise into the Top 25 will be a good thing for NYC hoops. I don't see them becoming a regular to the Top 10...just too tough to recruit to SJU. SO BL: I think Mullin can get them the level of consistent NCAA team but that is about it...it isn't your Bayside's SJU anymore.

I don't remember when Slice was at Pitt, but you could build a nice BE team around NYC guys like Antigua or Krauser. Maybe it's not top 10, but a consistent NCAA tourney team is certainly obtainable.

What killed the Johns was the rule change that disallowed players from collecting off-campus housing stipends if they lived at home.

Unfortunately the best NYC kids do not go to NYC high schools like they did in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. After 1 year they are off to the top national prep schools like Oak Hill, New Hampton, Tilton, Montverde, etc. At those schools they are recruited by the big elite programs. And while parts of Syracuse may be broken down and depressing, the SU campus is lovely. Compare it to STJ...no contest. STJ only plays it's major rivals in MSG, more than half it's games are in it's Queens 6,200 seat gym. I have nothing against STJ. It's a good program with a lot of history. I just think the STJ threat to SU is way overblown.

I think people are overrating Roehson a little bit, he is a good recruiter, but lets be honest, those kids went to Kentucky because of Calipari.

I wonder who will run the huddles for Mullin now.
