SMU will win the ACC title way before they get a distribution. They would destroy SU this year

Even North Texas, who's 3-6 this year, looks FAR superior offensively than us. Am I crazy to think both of these teams would destroy us?

No they would both beat us. SMU is going to be a perennial top program in the ACC in a few years. Probably the best funded NIL in the ACC with an enormous amount of in-state talent.

They have beaten no real teams this year and only have one left on their schedule. They lost to 4-5 TCU, but will run through the ACC?

Yes they will be a top ACC program within 4-5 years.

They've got big donors. Now that they're going to be in a P5 in a talent rich area, they'll do very well.

Going 5-3 in the ACC is doing very well. Winning the ACC short term is another story. They have a ways to go just to be the best watered down school in the AAC. Texas kids will still want to go to the SEC and even some B12 schools over SMU. And they don't draw any fans to play in front of. Not arguing the lack of long term potential.

If it were that easy to buy an ACC title Miami would have done it by now.

Well…they kinda got a 40 year head start on everyone else.

It would not shock me to see SMU in a college football playoff semi or championship game within 5 years; they are a program on a fast rise right now. Could be the next TCU.

Miami is weird. I think their administration wants football to be good enough to be perceived as a contender - but to not actually contend. There’s a long institutional memory of the team winning national championship while bringing shame and disrepute on the school, and a fear that could be replayed if the team got too good. But for alums who remember that time fondly, the school needs to create the illusion of effort to return to those glory days.

A while back I looked up spending on college football by school over a 5 year period, and Miami was 25th and 4th in the ACC. That’s probably right where they want to be, good enough to contend for an ACC title once in a while, but unlikely to win another national championship.

Read Out of Their League. SU was paying players before it was cool.

Eh. It was intended as a cheeky comment. Reality is this: “If you destroy a free market, you create a black market”. - James C. Humes

Since there has long been a market for good athletes, and the rules in college have prevented them from being legally paid - assuming a black market formed early and everywhere is probably a good assumption. It’s definitely a good assumption for any school with teams that were actually good.

SMU had the misfortune of being in a major market in Dallas with lots of media, where most of the fans supported the bigger schools SMU competed against. It was a perfect storm to get a hostile media to investigate them and take them down. SMU might have been more brazen about it than other schools - but the first two, and much more important points - make me unwilling to commit to that. Personally I think SMU got screwed 40 years ago, I’m glad they’ve rebuilt from the ashes, and I’ll be rooting for them in the ACC when they aren’t playing Syracuse.

They were caught red-handed complete with canceled checks and whistle blower. They were stupid and deserved what they got.
