He was forced to play on AstroTurf in the Dome - that hurt recruiting.
He lost assistant coaches because of pay scale - that hurt recruiting.
He had no weight room - that hurt recruiting.
He had no indoor practice facility - that hurt recruiting. No arguments that the facilities were making his job more difficult. However, we had good enough players to not lose 51-0 to mediocre teams, and to not lose to Temple. The epic meltdown blowouts we frequently suffered from 99-04, and losses to horrendous Rutgers and Temple teams had nothing to do with lack of talent. We had enough talent to not lose by 50 and to not lose to Temple. He wasn't getting it done on the field anymore with what he did have. I'd offer that we underachieved in 97 and 98 too.
He was promised that he would return for the 2005 season after winning the BE Championship, defeating BC in a brilliant away finale, and getting a bowl bid. Co-champs with 3 other teams, lost 51-14 in that bowl, lost to Temple, 6-6 season. The "spin" that some use to make that season sound so much better than it actually was drives me nuts. Mediocre year.
He had Ray Rice coming in 2005. I doubt one player would've made much of a difference, we were firmly planted in mediocrity by that point.
And, he took the program to new heights while he was on the Hill without cheating and with a solid academic record.
We were also having our worst seasons in about 20 years by the end of his tenure. The last two things are like a man bragging about never being arrested. So? That's what you're supposed to do!
