Some belated thoughts on Saturday

Shredder underthrew/threw behind his receivers a number of times but I’m not sure how different that is from prior years. He is a very accurate QB regardless and how completion percent backs that up

Dino crushes FCS opponents. Colgate 65-0, Wagner 59-0, Albany 62-24, HC, 41-7, Wagner 62-10, Cent Conn St 50-7, Colgate 50-7.

What was different this last game than the last two was that it wasn’t just Tucker running over, through, and around guys, and hitting bombs, they actually spread the ball around and threw underneath routes.

Good point. The FCS thing was my (wrong) perception of things. I guess I just never walk away from these games feeling good. I felt mostly good watching Colgate. I hate broken play bombs like the one to Jones when assessing the team against bad competition but these plays were rare Saturday. I like to see instead what you described, spreading the ball the around, moving the ball within the framework of the O, playmakers making plays. etc. A lot of different players made plays, this was encouraging.

I think this was a pretty good out of the gate showing.

GS actually said in an interview that he has so much trust in his receivers that he'll throw it to them even when they aren't open. He's confident that they'll go up and get it. The back shoulder throw is a staple in most offenses these days.

He does that with Gadsen a lot and I can live with that. He does that in the ACC and I'm not as confident our other guys (who do seem improved) can make plays over other DB's.

The Colgate game always brings back memories. I vividly recall the 71-0 beat down we handed them in 1959. However, it was once a bitter rivalry long ago.

My Dad always told stories of rowdy Colgate guys on the public transportation in Syracuse. He also told stories of how guys from each school would snatch guys from the other school and shave a C or an S into their heads. Sounds like a felony to me, but whatever.

My first job out of grad school was with a company whose President was a Colgate grad and former great football player long, long ago. He also played in the NFL. He was always OK with me and the fact that I did my undergrad and graduate work at his old rival seemed to garner his respect. He liked to tell stories of his games against SU.

On the other hand, he had an annoying habit of sarcastically pronouncing Syracuse as “Sir-a-kuss“

I thought about that and smiled in vengeance everytime we scored on Saturday.

My dad, who graduated in 1950, told the same stories about the S and the C haircuts. He also said that they would raid each other's campus. One year, to prevent the raids, he and his fraternity brothers would stack orange crates in the street but the guys from Colgate drove right through the crates. The next year, they filled the orange crates with sewer tiles. Not sure how that went over. I have no idea where one gets orange crates but he loved telling that story. He also said that after an S was shaved, they would wine and dine the victim which probably meant just get them drunk.

We may be saying the same thing but to me throwing behind a receiver unintentionally is different from throwing a little out of reach for a receiver to go up and get

At least when it came to clubbing this baby seal, they were able to big boy them at every level. That hasn’t always been the case.

The 2018 UConn game popped up on YouTube last night. So Smurfy at wr, rb, and db. No depth at lb.
We went 10-3 in 2018, it couldn't have been all that bad

That's what CDRW did to Jones on that rollout TD. Wasn't open, threw it anyway.

He’s a good punter too.

I'm surprised with the criticism of leaving Shrader, Allen, etc. in at the beginning of the second half. Has any team not started the second half with its starters? I can't remember any. Back in '98 when we hung 70 on Rutgers I think we scored 50 in the first half and still had our starters in for a series in the second half. I think it's pretty much SOP.

Yeah, Hatcher and Brown seemed to be pretty slippery.

Granted it was Colgate but I think we have guys ready to play that bring some skills we've been lacking.

Back to the OP, Shrader is going to have a fine year for us, but it won't surprise me if CD-RW ends up being the better QB for us. The ball just flies out of his hand.

If we can find 3 or 4 guys to catch 3 or 4 passes a game, aside from Gadsden, we will have a very good offense.

Very accurate Dino description. I either love what he does sometimes or hate what he does sometimes
