Something is not right

Reading through all of the QB related griping the past few days you would think that Babers hasn't signed any QBs other than Tommy since he's been here. That's simply not the case.

I was curious so I looked it up... last year at this time Chance Amie was still on the roster. His transfer wasn't announced until January 12. They also signed David Summers, flipping him late from Maryland. Not sure if that was in response to Amie leaving or not. Also, Amie was originally flipped late from Houston. Obviously the staff can't close and we never win recruiting battles. I guess we're always relegated to scraps from the "haves" because were only the lowest of "have nots".

I'll agree that this year so far has been a miss on signing a QB (obviously), but I would hope last year on the early signing day the staff was still planning to have Tommy Devito AND Chance Amie still here coming into this year. The QB depth would look much better right now if he was still here I think.

Regardless, the fact remains that they need at least 1 more QB at least before fall camp, ideally earlier for the spring. But I think there's been a little bit of revisionist history going on regarding QB recruiting for Babers since he's been here. Here's hoping that we get another high school QB flip in January and maybe a JUCO or grad transfer as well to add more depth and competition going into next season.

The coaches gambled big on this season looking to capitalize on last years success. And we were involved with a lot of big time recruits early on. Yeah, it sucks that things didn't go according to plan and we're stuck picking up the pieces now. But I think the coaches should get some respect for betting big. That takes balls. And it's our only path out of the mediocrity this program is mired in.

Good post but I think the oline and lack of qb development as well as looking lost on D is what turned some big recruits off. It's not record as much as it is evaluating the coaches, scheme, and vibe of the program and how they might fit in next year.

I think we could cut and paste the comments on this thread since the P days. We are not going to consistently land 4 stars - we need to coach up what we have, and win the scheme battle. Names and faces and hopes change but the narrative stays the same.

I agree and again, the big programs have plenty of 3* guys that get coached up and frankly, I would rather have these recruits. That said the 3* pool is vast and can range vastly in skill level. That's why I put more emphasis on position ranking. A kid can be anywhere from say 30th in his class to 100 at his position as a 3*.

There are definitely some good offensive pieces theres assuming no transfers or other attrition. OL needs to show a lot more improvement and we need to get some WR beyond Harris and Jackson but the talent is clear ie Benson and Hackett at TE Howard and Jordan and Adams at RB. We also have guys who red-shirted or who were injured who could make an impact next year like the Canadian WR, the third TE Conners who looked great in the spring game a few years ago but has been hurt, Hendrix, the slot WR from PA who was hurt this year etc. We desperately need another QB and to clean up the issues with Devito/Harris but the offense could be really good next year.

We need some tight ends with size, jacket is 6'3", 240. Yes, good size but 6'5" , 250 is the going size for most te prospects around the country. Benson is a wr who can play inside ir outside with his speed. He is 6'3", 210#.

Confusing to me how hard it is for some people to decipher the correlation between the horrible backyard we have and the near impossibility to recruit at a high level. Most powerhouse schools have tons of kids on campus every weekend on unofficials because they have huge talent bases within 100-200 miles. We have nothing like that whatsoever. Does any other P5 school have a worse home recruiting state than we do? I don't even know who is close? BC? Colorado?

Mass and Colorado has fb is better than ny. From what I see at area high schools, some teams have rosters in the 20s and some show up with 18 kids to play a fb game. Kids aren't coming out for fb like they did 10, 20, 30 years ago.

I don't know about that one... I'd say MA is about the same as NY. Top 5-10 kids are FBS-level, 10-25 kids are FCS, and the rest are DIII at best.

they lost because they were all doped on meth including the top guy himself. in the early years of the war, those troops tapped into limitless energy along with loss of empathy. eventually the side effects caught up with them. hitler went crazy. literally. we can thank drugs for not speaking german today.
Assuming what you say is true, had they not done drugs, it may not have gotten as far as it did.

I agree this thread would be perfect for him (otherwise hard pass).

Mahar and the German TE are both good size. The German guy is 6'7. It's likely he grows out of the TE position but they still have Mahar and Benson as 1at and 2nd year guys plus Hackett and the former walk on Conners who should be a jr eligibility wise

One thing that hasn't been addressed is that within the 3* tier there is a lot of variation in production, nationally. If recruiting is a probability game (I think it is) where the 5* kids are *almost* sure bets, 4* are the next best thing - 3* are the "who knows?" tier.

So then the question is, are we getting more production out of the 3* under Dino than we did under Shafer and Marrone? I'd be interested in peoples opinions on this.

Feels like we've had more All-ACC guys since Dino has been here, but it could be recency bias.

I do think more high level guys are making it to campus and that we've had more high impact transfers.

No. 89 is one of the best blocking tight ends in the ACC and he catches everything. No. 87 is definitely a tight end who will get bigger and stronger and has star potential written all over him. This is a position of strength for this team and potentially the best TE tandem next year in the conference, even if you long for different measurables.

When it’s all said and done it just comes down to money issues and I don’t know for sure obviously but we cannot compete with these huge big state schools, that’s just the way it’s looking to me. But we need to continue to spend money for the recruits to come here, they want quality of life while they’re here so just, All I ask is for them to just not to fall behind stay in the group in terms of facilities. Also yes In terms of the staff is the same thing you got a pay these guys quality guys to get them to come here! we need to open up the wallets. $25 million donation we got was a great start but let’s see what they spend it on. That’s pretty much the blueprint, do you want to win??? That’s how you do it!

Do you have any figures and analysis to back up what you're saying? Where do we actually stand as far as coaching salary pool, facilities expenditures, etc. I'm not interested in where we stand vs. the factories as we will never match them, but where are we against our peers. It's easy to just state that we're not committing meaningful dollars and that's why we went 5-7, but do actually know this to be the case? I'm not saying you are full of hot gas, just wondering because I've read from other sources that this presumed funding chasm vs our peer competitors doesn't exist.

Is it possible to wait until the recruiting cycle is over before the soap box crew start telling us how terrible everything is?

I mean, there is still 2 months to go afterall and we have 5-7 spots left to fill.
And the recruiting season isn't over in February. See: Bromley and Robinson.

That's it! Mystery solved.

Tristan is Herbert Hoover.
