Spring Game notes

Wow. I didn't even look at the stats. Definitely didn't seem it. He was air mailing some in regular passing drills. It always seemed his ball was high.

7-10, 103 yds, 1 TD.

Was there.

Off the top of my head, the guys who stood out for me - Jonathan Thomas, Corey Winfield, Erv Phillips, Devante McFarland, Ishmael, Jamal Custis, Hudson,

I thought Hunt looked pretty good. He threw long better than he ever has. He has a pretty quick release. He looks to be in the best shape of his career. He missed a few, but he seems to be in command.

If he goes down again we will have trouble.

Raymon looks good - no braces on knees - appears ready to play.

Foy looks to be in great shape - longer and more athletic than in the past.

The scrimmage was well run - very efficient - no wasted effort.

The offense was vanilla but efficient - the guys seem to know what they're supposed to be doing.

Refs didn't throw any interference. A WR got tackled and they didn't even throw a flag. Take today with a grain of salt.

There should have been at least 2-3 flags thrown for interference.

Are you saying that Hunt was 10-30? For us out of towneres, that can't be right.

Yes.

You would have a better feel than I being there, so I'd err with you. But a couple things:

- Thomas looked really interesting...but really light. Couldn't help but notice him, but man is he skinny.
- Hunt did not seem any more in command on my screen than he did two years ago. He just looked less effective. That said, didn't see him away from the action.
- Foy was old school. Seemed to be lean for sure.
- Lasker seems like he would be an amazing matador in Spain. What am I missing with this guy? He does not seem like a Tackle.

The biggest thing I like from what you said: the O seemed like they knew what they were doing. Huge development versus George McDumbass trying too hard to prove he was a legit OC by confusing people.

OPA, overall, after the game, are you more optimistic or pessimistic for 2015?[/QUOTE]

I don't have much confidence in the offense right now. The WRs as a unit look good, but someones got to get them the ball. Several times DBs were 10 yards off and there was no audible to a quick hitch (maybe bc the plays were scripted). We couldnt run the ball at all.

Something else that really frustrates me - Its bad enough that we dont have a real spring game, but the fact that our 1's dont go against each other ever is ludicrous.

You wanna see how our O will perform against Pitt, NCST, BC, Clemson, etc - youre best indication of what they can and cannot do is against our best D.
Youve got to figure out a gameplan that works with our O players, against our best D, not the back ups for a team that doesnt have much depth.

Wasn't Wilson 7-10?
yes...for 103 yards.

plus they sold 350 season tickets today.

don't know if they counted renewals though.

i thought Hudson looked really good out there today. It's going to be real tough to keep him off the field.

I think part of the issue is that as someone who streamed the game live from CT, so too can our 2015 opponents.

Lots of vanilla on display.

Brisley got pushed blantly from behind in the end zone could have been a td,,,, lots of contact today

Jonathan Thomas? Man, I thought he looked absolutely ripped. Kind of Dyshawn Davis like, but a little thicker.

I'm more optimistic.

Overall, I like what I saw today.

Can't sight being ripped on the screen (for me today at least.) But he did not seen big enough. You can be ripped and not big enough to play the position.

Hope you don't mind if I piggie back on your post.

RB's- McFarlane looks to be the 1 and Morris 2. Mc did a much better job hitting the hole and moving N to S with Morris more shifty. There is room for someone to step up in the spring or even RW if he commits.
WR- Ish and Corn Erv bulk of 1st string run. Very impressed with the trio of Enoicy Custis and Broyld as they have great size. Broyld had some nice catches dropped one maybe two. Estime got nothing. I wonder if the ankle has kept him sidelined for to much. He seemed very frustrated. Many dropped passes, some were behind the receiver others to much zip. Avant showed a little something.
OL-It is going to be interesting. Second team with Burton and McGloster had impressive size. What happened to Ward? Didn't see him with any snaps.
TE- Parris was most one snaps. TD made a couple of good catches but boy, they welcomed him in a rough way. Couple big hits on him on his first few catches.
QB- Very blah. We couldn't really go down field. We did have a few play action passes where the receiver was open. A couple of connects many more under thrown. This is something we need to work on if we are going to have any success. I do think they took away Hunts strength as the plays were blown dead with any rush on the QB. Wilson looked liked the 2 and Long might get his redshirt. Wilson by far was the best passer.

This all being said, I think they gave away nothing in the way of what we might be running. Today was extremely vanilla. Basic runs, blocking schemes, and routes. I do think they are keeping it very close to the vest. I would not take to much away from what was shown. the D knew the scheme as they have been playing it day in and day out.

DL- Luke got a lot of snaps at DE. Slayton got a lot of snaps over Williams and John. I think a lot has to depend on both coming back from injury. I think Samuels sat out today might have been Coleman on the sidelines. They closed up the running lanes well and got decent pressure on the QB's.

LB- This may be one of the fastest corps we have had. They did a pretty decent job in pass rush. Much better job covering the pass rush. Franklin is going to be awesome at the MLB. Hodge is going to blossom going back to the Will. Bennett did a great job at the SAM. Thomas flew around and is going to be a phenomenal blitzer. Moskal Vigil both solid.

DB's- Winfield Whigham Dowels Cordy did a good job in coverage although they got away with multiple PI's. Winfield looks like he has made the jump to DB and could be a good one. Much more confident in coverage and these four will rotate with not much drop off.

S- We are razor thin right now. Scissum made some huge hits and looks like he is going to be very physical. Hudson played along side Scissum. Outside of these two, we played walkons. Williams and Morgan will add depth and possibly push to start. Both were out today with Williams sick and Morgan injured. We need some freshmen to come in or we could have some issues here if more than one player goes down.

Dixon was booming punts. He is going to be a weapon like Long.

Norton seems to have gotten things straightened out in his head and hit all his kicks. Hopefully the ultimatum he received sunk in and he will make the most of his opportunity. He showed flashes his freshman year but spent to much time playing. Murphy was solid as well and also made everything he kicked.

As stated, I think we didn't show much on O and this was on purpose. I am not putting much stock in this. I don't think we will have a strong idea of what we have until game three Wake. D also had the advantage as they have been lining up against the same plays all spring.

On another note, there was a group of gentlemen sitting in front of me. One gentleman was there with his family and was wearing a jersey with "Orangeyes" on the back of it. His youngest daughter was adorable and was all over the place. I think if he is on the board that we could patent something to harness the energy of the youngest as she was a whirlwind. We could possibly cure America's dependency on foreign oil. I figured they were posters from the board. I was the hideous fella with the cute blonde.

10 of 30 from our starting quarterback is atrocious. I don't care how good our defense is. That is a horrible sign.
He can't catch it for them. He threw mostly very well.

Group of murderous assassins at linebacker. Very impressed with Bennett and JT. Hodge on the outside is also an upgrade. All around I thought the defense showed marked improvement from the young guys.

JT was all over the field. Definitely excited about what he can do. I don't think we can overestimate what Ron Thompson did today. If he shines, don't expect him to use that fifth year.

I streamed it. Mcfarlane looked like the better back. Morris 'ed up an outside run bigtime. Outran both blockers and got tackled when he shouldve cut it up. Basic stuff.

Our lbs looked great. Bennett is going to be fantastic.

Put me in the crowd of concerned w qb play. I dont care how vanilla the offense was. They missed open guys consistently. Aj impressed me the most and i think hes our future qb.

We need to feed steve. Hopefully lester can exploit him.

He might looked ripped because he has low body fat, but he needs to add another 10-15 pounds. He'll get there. Kid has talent to boot.

Parris noticed my older son take down his three year old brother after the game - and wanted his picture.

My 5 year old now "loves football" and is rooting for Josh. A successful day all around, I'd say.
